Anaphylactic Reaction From Using My New Trilogy Evo Ventilator! Life with a Vent

  • In 2021, Phillips Respironics did a voluntary recall of many of their ventilators including the Trilogy 100, which is the ventilator I use. The company developed a solution to the problem. All ventilators had to be sent back to the company to have the recalled item changed out. In September 2022, my ventilator was fixed. Six months later, I found out my ventilator which was fixed needed to be replaced as it was unsafe to use. My Trilogy 100 ventilator was going to be switched out for a new Trilogy Evo ventilator. Yesterday, my new Trilogy Evo arrived...and it did not go well. #lifewithavent #ventilator #trilogy

    Wow! One of the the toughest things to control is the out gassing of plastics in tubing and/or anything plastic. Before I got into industry, I used to think plastics never changed. While they don’t rust, they dry rot, out gas, etc. I hope this resolves for you, quickly, and I think your idea of letting it run for a while is a good one.

    I may not be correct but I think instead of holding back your reactions and you had several not just one and they sound severe you should react as your body signals so the respiratory therapist knows there are problems and exactly what they are. Instead you put yourself through a lot of suffering and have a machine that may never be right and you will be nervous and shy away from using it. And if your good machine shuts down you are left with a machine that may give the same result as the first time. I pray 🙏 all will work out well for you. Take care God Bless Russ

    I hate that you had issues resulting from the Trilogy EVO! I do my best with mine, and I really struggle which is why I have to have so much help with mine, but my RT is doing her best to adapt this thing to me. Thankfully my family can adjusts my settings when I instruct them to, and they carry the vent for me, because I can't on my own. I wish the numbers were larger on the ventilator, because I'm legally blind, and it's impossible for me to adjust my settings which if quite often. Somebody has to do this for me. My sister one time flat out said to me, "Peter? You need to call your RT and tell them you need another ventilator." I told her they won't give me another one. I had tried to get a ventilator called a VOCSN, which has five therapies in one machine. And I qualify, being that I already use all five therapies. THE VOCSN is a great ventilator.

    • @LifewithaVent
      @LifewithaVent  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you for sharing. I hope one day you are able to get the VOCSN. Do you have health insurance which is paying for your medical equipment? If so, you may want to check with them to find out what the requirements are to get a second ventilator. Many insurance companies allow a person to have a second ventilator, especially if you need different settings throughout the day.

    Yikes. This is scary. You have to think of your safety first; it was not a good idea to hide your symptoms from your RT. You are also required to call 911 after giving yourself an epi pen. Epi pens do not completely eliminate the reaction. They are meant to buy you time to call 911, because as soon as the epinephrine wears off, you can relapse into anaphylaxis. I pray that you take this as a learning moment. I am very glad you are ok. This could have turned catastrophic.

    • @LifewithaVent
      @LifewithaVent  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for sharing your insight. In in my life, I have had a number of anaphylactic reactions. I very rarely go to the emergency department due to the following. I am told, "Why did you come here? You already have a trach and use a vent. If your airway swells up, you will not stop breathing. There is nothing we can do for you. Go home." Due to these emergency department frustrations, my doctor has supplied me with EpiPens and also IV Benadryl, epinephrine and steroids. (I also have several meds which can assist with airway management.) There is a protocol we follow. When I have "x" symptoms, I take my EpiPen. Then when "y" happens, I take Benadryl. And the protocol goes on. I have a permanent IV line, so administering IV meds is not a problem. My mom is a skilled nurse and is able to help me manage my symptoms.

    Hello My Dear and Precious Friend I am So Very Sorry that you went through that Terrible Experience with The New Trilogy Evo. I Hope that you are feeling much better and your Lungs are Healing. I am wondering if The Trilogy Evo has been recalled for this awful chemical smell that is being breathed into your lungs? It seems to me it has terrible side effects that No One should deal with especially when it has to do with your health. Did you keep The Trilogy Evo or did you send it back to the Company? I Hope you are still on your Trilogy 100 for that seems to work best for you. Praying all is well and that you are feeing much better.

      Hello. The chemical smell is just from the manufacturing process. Almost all new things have smells to them. This just happened to be very intense because it went right into my lungs. I was able to keep the Trilogy 100. After a few weeks, I returned the Trilogy Evo back to my medical equipment company.

      @Jess-wk5jo That would be a good question to ask your medical provider. Many people have asthma as a child and outgrow it. Many times, people do not have any issues with asthma as an adult. But, some people can have a re-occurrence of the asthma. It depends on what caused the asthma as a child.

    I know how you feel, it's like everything these days is made to be toxic. I was very apprehensive when getting my cpap machine and researched to buy one with as little foam as possible inside. Despite this, the machine still smelled when new, especially the heated hose it came with. I ended up disassembling it and soaking the plastic and silicone componentry in hot water alternating with vinegar and baking soda. Eventually I managed to get the stink out of the parts completely. I then got a heated humidifier and had to use a different heated hose that was also unusable until it too had to receive the water bath and repeatedly airing it out as well. I would have thought a ventilator as that Evo worth $15K wouldn't have this problem...and to think someone in hospital will be among the first to have to use the new device possibly while intubated and meant to recover from some kind of trauma (perhaps even comatose).

    • @LifewithaVent
      @LifewithaVent  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks so much for sharing. That is a great idea with the vinegar and baking soda. I often soak my new air hose in a hot, soapy water, but it still has a smell to it. The vinegar and baking soda sound like they may help get rid of the plastic smell. I will have to try that. Thanks so much!

    • @exxr
      @exxr 10 месяцев назад

      @@LifewithaVent Yeah, because the genuine (blue) F&P heated humidifier hose had a strong new smell, I got hold of the Trilogy clear hose that you use but as it turned out that one was made with phthalates so while it started out with less of a smell (although still fairly offensive), after I aired it out in the hot summer sun that hose became positively awful smelling, as the phthalates clearly started breaking down and leaching out. Eventually, I went back to the genuine blue hose as that one is labelled as phthalate free and eventually its smell did dissipate almost entirely if not totally smell free for all intents and purposes. If you'd like to get that hose I believe the code is RT319, I found a RUclips video from the University Hospitals Bristol & Weston, they show that circuit in use with the Trilogy Evo.

    • @exxr
      @exxr 10 месяцев назад

      @@LifewithaVent Also, make sure you alternate vinegar and baking soda as these will cancel each other out if mixed up together. Some people mistakenly do this.

    • @LifewithaVent
      @LifewithaVent  10 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much for sharing. Yes, the blue circuit. My medical equipment company switched to the blue air hoses this spring. I wonder if they switched because of they are phthalate free. (My respiratory therapist had no idea why the circuits were changed.)
      I did not know about phthalates and how bad they are for a person until a recent RUclips viewer shared with me many trach tubes have phthalates in them. I have been researching phthalates. I should probably switch to the blue circuits if they are phthalate free. I will use your technique to get rid of the smell.

    • @LifewithaVent
      @LifewithaVent  10 месяцев назад

      If it would have been my long-time respiratory therapist at my home, I would have told her, but I recently lost my long-time respiratory therapist. This was only the second time this respiratory therapist was at my home on her own. I did not want to cause her stress or have her think what she did caused me to become quite sick. When people are new to a profession, the last thing I want is for them to lose confidence or doubt their skills.
