  • Watch in High Definition! Here's the final video from my trip on the Tioga Pass Private Rail Car from Los Angeles to San Diego. This segment covers the trip from Oceanside Station to San Diego Station and the Tioga Pass and Overland Trail being uncoupled from the Surfliner. Our train (572) had F59PHI 454 and Cabcar 6951. In this final part, you can see the beautiful southern portion of the Surfline. Along the way, you can see Carlsbad Village Coaster Station, new double main track construction from just past the Station to CP Farr, the Metrolink Race Train, Carlsbad Poinsettia Coaster Station, Encinitas Coaster Station, Solana Beach Station, the Del Mar Cliffs, The Torry Pines Marshes, Sorrento Valley Coaster Station, the train winding around Miramar Hill, Old Town Transit Center and Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego.
We also saw a couple trains:
Train 1: Southbound Coaster Train 688's Trainset sits in Oceanside. Cabcar 2308. F40PHM-2C 2104.
    Train 2: Northbound Metrolink Race Train. Cabcar 635. F59PHI 885 and MP36PH-3C 891.
Train 3: Coaster 688 arrives in San Diego.
Thanks for watching the series! I hope you enjoyed this amazing look at the Tioga Pass, 8th Street Yard, and the Surf Line!

The horn and bell on a locomotive are necessary safety devices that the engineer is required to sound every time he/she crosses a road at grade or if people/equipment are too close to the tracks. History has shown that the train horn is the most effective means of warning that a train is approaching and they have saved countless lives.

The railroad was built in the 1880s, and the steep, winding stretch over Miramar was the only was to get over the hill. To this day, tunneling under the hill would be far to costly and difficult.
