My best friend in university used to make fun saying why is it called 503 or some similar number (because three isn't IIV anyway) so I once made a graphic for the band that had the number there included
The amps are mic'd. The sound of the amp captured by the mic's is going through the PA. Turning the amps away from the audience is common. This allows the amp to be turned up without killing the performers or the people close to the stage. Having the sound come mostly from the PA as opposed to the amp also allows for the sound engineer to more easily mix the overall sound of the performance. From what I understand. I asked the same question once. lol
