Bob Wills "San Antonio Rose" Live (circa 1940's) Musical Shorts from the 1940's Warner Brothers. Austin Music Network Collection. 793 BobWills SARose Live
My granddaddy, Elmer, was a MASSIVE fan of Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys. He introduced me to the guitar and to the wonderful sounds of this group. My granddaddy was a simple man, a carpenter, and a family man. He was my family’s patriarch, and he made it to the age of 97 years old when he passed away in 2016. He was one of the most honest and good men I ever knew and I cherish the time that I was able to spend with him. I’m listening to this song in your honor, my dear sweet granddad. I miss you and I love you with all my heart. ❤
@@KingQuakk Dude I love the fact you love this song. Now try stay all night, stay a little bit longer. Or better yet just any of Bobs songs. Enjoy bro.
when you here the musical expression ‘ play it straight’ , I think of this guy Tommy. He is one of the greatest singers of all time , and always on point . Others joined Wills yet Tommy was never replaced.
I thought he sacked Tommy once when he complained to Bob he was the one who copped all the flack when Bob decided to have a few and give the Show a miss and the audience started throwing bud bottles?
My dad loved that kind music every Sunday morning my dad took us to Calhoun falls to visit his sister my dad would hum them songs as we rode down that ol country road I never forgot so years later I'm listening to them some ol songs bless all those singers that helped keep America a great place to live in
I have a CD album of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. I love it to pieces! I lived in San Antonio back in the early 1970s. I made two friends there (an older couple who passed on long ago), and they introduced me to the music of Bob Wills.
@Jahchild Mel bite me ! He is from limestone county Koss Texas & yes we are related I still have relatives in Texas ya don't know me so your opinion means nothing just like you !
“Just to hear the Texas Playboys and Tommy Duncan sing, makes me glad to be in Texas where Bob Wills is still the King.” Sung by Waylon Jennings, who knew what it was all about--real country music. Not the junk that passes for country music today. Ah-haaaaaaaaaaa.
Ahhh Haaa Yowzer yowzer yowzer, old Bob could falsetto in his sleep. When the gals started singing he’d slide on over screeching’ and they’d all get a nervous smile on their faces hoping he hadn’t over done it before the show.
Country and Western is a forgotten music. It was to Country Music what Disci was to Rock N Roll. Country music people didn't like it. Neither did most Rockers care for Disco.
I don't recall, ever, hearing any country music lover say that they didn't like country, western music. As a matter of fact, most credit Bob Wills as bringing country music to the attention of the urban listeners.
Beautiful music with heart and soul sung by individuals with clarity of voice. Today horrible stuff passed for " Music" belched out by strained voices ,breathy and scratchy, with no voice quality. Notice the 3 lovely ladies,? No purple hair, no heads shaven, no gawdy jewelry from noses ,eyebrows and who knows where else, 'trying" to "appear" avant garde. Just natural beauty. AND wearing clothes to boot. Today less than good looking, poor singers distracting onlookers With skin showing to mask their lack of talent. And we call such progress? Me thinks NOT.
I 100% agree with you .The popular music over the last few decades has degraded into a gaudy and grotesque visual and sonic miasmic phenomenon . Screaming indistinct vocals , virtually devoid of recognizable melody , and largely reliant on radically flamboyant attire and bedazzling stage effects to seduce impressionable audiences . It's utter crap as far as I'm concerned !
I have a couple questions. Is Bob Wills the band leader and he just has guest singers on his records? And his primary instrument was the fiddle/violin? Also I notice he does this high pitched call and response, is that how his voice sounded or he was purposely altering it?
He was the band leader, and his wife was the band manager in the later years. Leon was also the band manager. Bob Wills did sing on many songs, but what made him and the Playboys special was the act. They NEVER had a set list and played songs on a "as needed" basis, depending on what the crowd was feeling. THAT is what made seeing them so special. The band memorized THOUSANDS of songs, and no one in the band knew what Bob would want to play next. They were expected to know every part. Sometimes, he would sing, but mostly Tommy would sing in the beginning years. It was all about the feel. Bob would make sure in every performance that every band member had a chance to show their style and made sure to showcase it. Sometimes, the fiddle would be lead, sometimes the steel, sometimes the jazz section. It's what made them so special. And that high-pitched voice was his signature. Those were some of the first "ab-libs" in recorded music and are still used to this day in the country and, most noticeably, rap music. If you heard those "aahaaa's" coming out of Bob, it meant he was really feeling the tune, and that was his way of expressing that. Truly, one of the greatest performers and bands of the 20th century. To this day, Leon is considered to be one of the all-time greatest steel guitarists, and Elon, one of the greatest rythum guitarists to ever live.
This is great, but why is Bob wearing a bad toupee? He wasn't bald, but I guess they didn't like his receding hairline(?) If they were so concerned about cosmetic appearances they should've given Tommy some dentures.
In those years in capitalist countries like the US, only a few could afford to pay dental´s bills or insurance fees... as it is today. Millions of Americans can´t afford to pay the fees to private owned insurance companies... and mandatory health insurance still "communist devil´s stuff"...
How can you feel bad when you listen to Bob Wills? Ah haaaa!
You cant feel bad listening to Brotha Bob!!! I love the Ah haaaa's to boot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hearing the Texas Playboys puts a smile on my face no matter the time

I wonder if Tommy Duncan was ever thinking, "I wish he'd shut TF up while I'm singing!"
Lol probably
SHUT UP YOURSELF 😂
Had Phil Hartman lived he could’ve made a great bio-pic of Bob Wills with his funny strutting and pulling faces and bizarre interjections.
I can see it
I knew Bob's son, whom we also called Bob, in the Navy aboard the RK Turner. Bob was a great guy and a great musician, also.
I love this music Im sorry but I always wished Bob would be quiet when the singer took over .
Many imitate, only one original, miss all of his hits.
When he kicked off with Faded Love everyone hit the dance floor.

WOW. I've loved this song since the 70s, but I never got to hear (or see) the original band perform it until now!
Tommy is the real legend
Bob must not of had dental insurance though

Dang, Bob Wells had these Ladies up front and center where they belong K
My daddy used to jitterbug to this while singing it.
This world would have been fun to live in. It no longer exists!

Not everyone loved it.
I recall reading, former band members, down on their luck, would be given money by Bob, to tide them over.
I went to Graduate school in Texas. Texas women are the most beautiful women anywhere!

The instrument is called a Steel Guitar or a slide guitar
Pedal steel guitar or lap steel if it has no pedals.

Who are the ladies that sing with him?
Gritos??
Was Bob Wills a crow in a past life? 1:50 🤔 Very strange.

Makes me want to vote for Lyndon Johnson!
That made me laugh.
Best comment of the day, heck, week.
Lbj had something to do with Kennedys murder
Nothing could do that for me, LBJ I mean!

Pretty sure I hear a rattler buzzing!
This would have good if Bob Wills would have just kept his mouth shut! What with the cat howlin?? !!!
Tommy (vocalist) needs some serious dental work on his choppers. Looks like all his are rotting out . Disgusting
Im sure he's listening
This was before people were judged by their orthodontist bills.

That ain´t no cowboyhats... cowboys on a saturday night wore clean jeans and cowboy outfit and not that bourgeois suits and ties...
