  • Smaller men who were able to defeat the much bigger opponent. Every time I see the difference in size of these types of fights, I always think about how it might be possible to beat someone so big. How can you take their punches or overcome their size? But I guess great training will always surpass the size difference.
Weight divisions exist for a very good reason, but when MMA started, one could see these types of fights all the time. This really allowed people to show their skills against all kinds of opponents, which let us see which martial arts were really worth learning. I wish that fights like this occurred more frequently.
If it were possible to see more fights like these, who would you like to see fight? I would like to see Lomachenko against Ali, their great confrontation of movements would be incredible.

This reminds me of high school wrestling...I wasn't very into it, but there was a kid that was almost 400lb...and he had no one to wrestle because the coach couldn't force anyone to fight up a weight class, and no one volunteered, so I did. I was 130lb. Luckily he wasn't a wrestler either, and all I remember is trying to wrap my arms around his thigh for a take down and being unable to because my arms literally weren't long enough to reach around his girth. I managed to take him down, but it was more of a slow fall due to his exhaustion vs a controlled takedown, and he tapped as soon as we hit the mat.

Fighting is primal at first but becomes a game of patience and pride. Both the same. You can’t win a fight if your purpose is to win. It’s very much the opposite. You when to survive . This is all you have in the ring.A fighter is simply a patient warrior waiting for the fight to end. Only one wins. But the goal is never to win there’s only just survive.

I was close to their weight, most times stronger and being shorter, had the leverage, i'd go low, hit with shoulder in gut, grab them behind the knees, pick them up and drive into the ground on their backs...they USED TO GET SO PISSED...the big guys weren't used to being manhandled like that, and didn't like it, one bit..

In highschool, me and a buddy would spar semi-frequently. I weighed somewhere between 120 and 125lbs, he weighed somewhere between 280 and 300. I stood at 5'5", he would have an extra foot on me at 6'5". The last time we sparred, I shot-in for a double-leg push-over (my aim was to get him to the ground and go for submission) but once I knew my plan wouldnt work with him spreading away from me, like any highschool wrestler would, I re-planted my feet under myself and proceeded to stand up and dump him over my head behind me. It knocked the wind out of him, and before I even got the clinch for a triangle choke in, he was tapping. The bigger they are, the harder the fall. I helped him sit up, got his hands on his head to help regain his ability to breathe, and we shook, but never sparred after that. We still had respect for one another, but I think I outright surprised him, as I had never even tried to lift him before that in our previous sparring sessions. I felt like a badass, no lie xD

There's a video here on YT where this black belt BJJ dude, like 5'6" maybe 150 lbs, took on a like 6' 200 lb body builder. The BJJ took some his but eventually took the bigger guy down, wore him out, and beat him, even broke his nose. Sure, size can help out to a certain extent, but proper skill can help out also. Except w/ Mike Tyson. Feck that. No amount of training or money would convince me to get into the ring w/ that guy. 😅

I had a friend years ago who was a big guy and used to be a bouncer. He and I got to talking one day about the types of guys he would be most worried about that would come into the bars he worked at. Also there were a couple of other guys including my brother in law who stood 6'2" tall and thought his height and weight of about 230 was enough to intimidate most people into not fighting him, in other words, he was a big coward who hoped his size would keep him out of fights lol. Anyway, as Jack thought about how to answer that question, my brother in law, who has never been a bouncer, decided to "answer" the question by saying it was more than likely guys his size that Jack, my buddy would be most concerned about and have to keep an eye on. Because if trouble started this type of a guy would be the most dangerous to Jack and the other bouncers. My brother in law, said that a guy his size would be more of a concern over a guy like, oh Ron's size. I am about 5'7" tall and at I weighed about 190 pounds at that time. Jack thought about it and he said, "No, no guys like you really didn't concern us too much. Most of the time those guys are all talk and just think their size will keep them out of a fight. Guys like Ron though, well because they are short they tend to get picked on more, usually by guys your size, and so they are either big cowards and won't fight at all, or they have been in enough fights to know what they are doing and they will beat your ass before you know what happened to you.".
Now let me say this - Jack and I spent a lot of time together, he was disabled at this time so I would go to his house and fix his vehicles and things around his house for him. Jack knew me very well and had seen me in times when I would have to stand up for myself. He saw me lifting things like transmissions out of his suburban and setting them on a wheeled cart by myself. He also knew my brother in law, and well let's just say Jack was unimpressed with him lol. After Jack said what he did my brother in law laughed at him and asked Jack if he seriously thought a guy like me would be able to be a guy his size in a fight. I am telling you all right now, the look of seriousness that overtook Jacks face was frightening! He looked at my brother in law and he said, "Let me give you some advice, and this is coming from a man who was a bouncer for over 20 years, who was a golden gloves boxing team member and a guy who was never afraid of anyone. If you were to piss Ron off and get into a fight with him, you would not know what hit you buddy! You would be on the floor coughing on your own blood and teeth so fast Mario Andretti would be amazed at the speed.". Lol Jack loved Mario Andretti! My brother in law, just had this look of, " oh shit" on his face. I on the other hand wasn't so confident of my skills as Jack was LOLOL. I don't ever back down from a fight, but I am not stupid either!! LOL. Anyway, about a year later my brother in law and I almost got into a fight. I was in my pickup and he was running off to the mouth, I got out of my truck and told my brother in law I was going to beat him so bad his own momma wouldn't recognize him. LOL I think he had a flashback to that day at Jacks because he got this really odd look on his face and then just walked back to his house telling me to get off his property. LOL.
As a shorter guy I can say it is tough being short. Bigger guys DO think they can just intimidate you by their size and this puts you into a position of either having to learn how to fight and handle yourself or how to get out those situations with your teeth still in your head lol. Due to a lot of issues with my dad and step dad - I learned how to fight and handle myself.

It’s not the size brotha. Size really has nothing to do with it unless it’s a really significant difference. Take someone 6’8, 265 lbs kinda like LeBron. If that guy is fighting a 5’5 115 lbs soaking wet person, they’re gonna lose 6 outta 10 times. But in saying that, I’ve practiced jiu-jitsu for right at 10 years now and experience is the key, not size. You take anyone, and I mean almost ANYONE who knows what their doing, wether it’s stand-up, joint locks and manipulations, ground, etc. vs someone who doesn’t, or thinks they do lol, the experience is going to win every time. Every time.

@@joshreece8550 Oh I fully agree with you there! Like I said, I am about 5'7" tall so I know all about being the short guy lol. In high school there was this kid named Brandon who was like the school tough guy, nobody messed with him, well unless you wanted your butt kicked lol. He was about 6'2" and a big boy and very strong. He was not a "good" guy either, he was into all kinds of trouble in school and out of school. One day my bike got stolen and a friend said that he saw Brandon by it earlier that day. My friend told me this in gym class as we were sitting in the bleachers. I saw Brandon come walking into the gym so I marched right up to him and told him that I knew he stole it and he had until 3 pm to get it back to me or I was calling the cops and was gonna tell them he took it. Oh did he get mad! He denied taking it and told me I had better not tell the cops he did. Well, 3 came and went and I didn't get my bike, so I walked home, about 4 blocks from school, and I called the police. They came to my house, I gave them all the info, including Brandon's name. The next day he came up to me in gym class and said the cops came to his house and questioned him. Anyway, he and I had a couple of different run ins within the next few months and yet he never not once tried to fight me. Even out of school he and some friends were going to beat up two friends of mine but then I saw what was about to happen in the street and I ran over there and as soon as Brandon saw me, he told his friends that they were done and just going to leave. No fighting at all! His friends asked why and he just told them to go. Another time he and those same guys tried to jump my friends again and I got involved and with the same results. No one knew why, me either lol, but Brandon just absolutely refused to fight me! about 15 years later I saw him while I was delivering some wood to a job site he was working at, he worked for a construction company. I brought up these times and asked him why he never would fight me. He told me that he admired that I stood up to him about the bike, which btw no he wasn't who stole it, he admired how I stood up for my friends and he saw me one day hit another kid in the mouth and he just decided that he liked me and there was something about me that told him he had better just leave me the hell alone lol. Personally I think he would have friggin killed me in a fight! LOL. But yes, unless it is a really extreme situation, just because one fighter is smaller that does not mean they will lose a fight if both are trained or at least know how to fight. My 6'2" brother in law and his 6'1" in friend, both who act like they are the toughest guys to ever live, by how they talk lol, they got their asses beat one day in a fight against two other people. My brother in law actually got choked out by the guy he was fighting. OK I told you how big he and his friend were right? Who were their opponents? Dude I am NOT making this shit up, they got beat up by my brother in laws cousin and his wife!!! His cousin stood maybe, MAYBE 5'4" at the most and probably weighed about 120 pounds and his wife was about the same size. LOL.. My brother in law actually used this fight to BRAG that he is not afraid to get a gun and shoot someone!! After being knocked out from his cousin getting him in a headlock, which I will never understand how a guy that short was able to do that to such a taller guy lol, my brother in law came to and his cousin and wife were fighting his friend so he ran into the house to get the .45 kept in the desk. His sister knew what he was doing and yelled at the cousin to get out of there before he came back and shot them. Yes, he uses that incident to brag about how "tough" he is because he isn't afraid to get a gun lol. Everyone he tells that story to says the same thing to him, "Umm you are actually bragging about going to get a gun because your really short cousin and his wife was beating you and your buddy up?" LOLOLOL.

@@jermulaattori2259 Nope, every word is true. Start paying attention yourself to the guys most likely to fight, most of the time it is the shorter guys. I am not saying the shorter guys are more prone to winning, just that they are usually more prone to not backing down. Now I am talking about guys who aren't afraid to fight, I'm not talking about the short guy who always gets his ass kicked and has no idea how to fight. A lot of the time the taller guys are so used to people "thinking" they are tough because they are so tall that they use that to their advantage and just intimidate others. Like my ex brother in law does. I have seen him numerous times "act" tough, but when it comes right down to actually fighting, he walks away every single time.

Ron Just Ron You know assumption is the mother of all fuckups? First of all, big guys don’t necessarily think they are so intimidating that they can get away with everything and nobody wants to start shit with them. Maybe they are in average just more calm and confident than smaller guys. I’m 6 foot 4 and 270 pounds and I never have people coming on to me, but why would they, I’m nice to other people and don’t act like an asshole.

In my limited experience, the bigger man usually dominates by fear. A good tactical fighter will recognize this and "feel" the bigger man out. I've seen many big men get their ass kicked because of this fake bravado, almost like they expect the fear to disable the smaller opponent. If the opponent knows no fear and fights to destroy, not impress, they will win every time.
