Absolutely love Dave just riding in front of his men, hyping them up before the battle by going "Lads you look positively smashing today. Oi you there in the back! Ye love that purple cloak."
Getting into Magurix' mindset I think he'd rather reach for the riches of Mesopotamia than betray his friends in the west. Probably Ptolemy would pay you good money to go east.
Tip: in DEI if you put an army with only the general in a settlement, the general will act as a governor increasing income and public order. That's where the governor skill tree is designed for. Edit: they will also gain exp just by governing so you can rank them up.
The Malena drawing is superb, I love it. I think the westward expansion plan should not be abandoned altogether but if the situation is different, then you just have to adapt the plans, Szeleukid empire is likely to collapse anyway, the galls might as well have a chunk of it. I think King Magurix would attack them :)
Some interesting notes about the Galatians that ive read about is that they where formed by two groups that seperated from Brennus's Main army before they invaded Grece to sack Thrace, after they where invited into Anatolia. Each group was made up of 20000 people half being armed men, showing that they where there to sack and settle land. The Tectosages come from the Volcae tribes, the part of the tribe that originates from the Upper valley of the Garrone river near Toulouse. Thanks for the series, enyoing all the content and the historial context!
Regarding Ptolemi owning Side, there is a mechanic in DEI where a diplomatic mission to a very friendly faction can end up with that faction gifting you a region. It might be a bit cheese and not 100% guaranteed but maybe you could have it being a kind of gift for helping Ptolemi in his war against the Selucids? If the rng god see fit letting it happen in the first place of course.
Antioch is a good city to be a base for your further campaigns, walled, with a port, and it's closing the way to inner kingdom, also selecuids almost lost all their satrapies and very busy on other fronts, and if I'm not mistaken they have only port at midterranian which is Antioch. But there can be a problem with troccmi tribe if satrapies decide not to defect, 3 wars for pacifistic fraction seemed to be to much)
I would imagine Gallic mercenaries would run away as soon as they seemed to be losing the battle. But Gallic warriors fighting invaders, perhaps that would be a fight to the death.
at 1:00:15 Why does he look that way? maybe its the weather, maybe he just finds trousers over-rated - or maybe its Maybelline... uggh, bad joke, but that's just me ;-) Really digging the series. Amending to add this also: at/around 1:29:00 picking the Shrine of Toutatis - I guess just because it sounds a little similar, this made me think of the horse named Incatatus (probably spelled this wrong but it should be phonetically correct at least) which was the horse that one of the nuttier Romans fancied making a consul I believe... Followed the recent Empire at War series all the way through as well and really enjoyed that one too - ditto the Oblivion playthrough, very neat that you've come back to it for the time being. Keep up the great work! Also, always enjoy the intro rp sections as well in both this and EAW.
Maybe Melina can convince the Ptolemoi to hand over control over Side to have the Galatians join the war against the Seleucids. If the comment section is to be believed, a diplomatic mission might be able to get the Egyptians to hand over the settlement, maybe you could RP that as payment to hire the galatians as mercenaries.
If you get a crash, try loading the last autosave and then saving manually and reloading, if that doesn’t work, do the same process for an earlier save (saving often is the word)
Step 1 Take the region Antioch is in.(Maybe not ALL of it if someone like Pontus takes a slice) Step 2 Do whatever shenanigans necessary to make peace with the Seleucids. I don't think this will be that hard since they are at war with everyone else in the region practically. without Antioch's resources, the Ptolemy's armies will probably conquer the rest of Syria which will help. Step 3 We aren't conquering all of Greece without a navy. (Ask the Spartans how that went) Therefore we engage in an island hoping campaign taking Cyprus, Rhodes and Crete while building gradual naval strength along the way. Step 4 Analyze the political situation in mainland Greece and "Divide et Impera" Step 5 Once enough of mainland Greece is ours (to safely not cause Mediterranean War One) We go to Pergamum and tell them to bend the knee or be sacrificed to the old gods. Step 6 Profit.
So long as comments might have some say on your choice, then my hat goes towards marching east. This campaign seems to be baking up a conflict with the Seleucids. You even talked about it in this episode how there were two ways you saw this goin in retrospect, and how we've gone the way of angering Seleucia. Let the Gauls march all the way to the Indus valley! Imagine the armor they'll be sporting by the time they reach it!
Sacking and building up could be quite fun, especially doing a grand expedition to the east throigh Mesopetamia. My brain is saying to take Antioch for the same reason yours is, so that you finally have a port of some variety. If you manage to peace out with the Selucids you could use ships from Antioch to go west and take a foothold in Greece, you get best of both worlds, but that's probably much easier said than done, especially since the Selucids currently just loathe you. Which... I mean you did sack and help destory what basically amounts to a client state, so I'd also be annoyed. I love the idea of building a confederation of other gaulic factions so I really want to see west, but going east to put dirt in the Selucid's eyes seems like a much more practical choice and likely would be a great deal more fun, so I'm also very torn.
I'd imagine that Lentullus is trying to convince the Gauls to go East, since he only came to Galatia because he wanted to write a history of Persia. Also, I'm aboard the 'sack Babylon' train. Time to see some Gauls in Iraq.
I quite like the idea of Gauls in the desert, I think it'd be pretty visually interesting, so I'd cast my vote towards raiding around the Seleucid empire. It also feels like a good thematic extension to starting a Gallic faction in Anatolia. While eventually having big battles with Roman armies would be fun, I think other factions already have that role to play, so to speak. I can already head-cannon a story where King Magurix, perhaps inspired by the local Greek influences, slowly develops his own delusions of being the next Alexander the Great. Or maybe he just wants to expand his collection of heads. Anyways, this has been a great series so far.
This might be favorite Total War let's play. Story, background information, sensible role-play. I would also suggest the following for Antioch: Maybe "liberate" it? Could be role played as installing a Seleucid puppet king. Sack teh resrt of the Seleucid Empire and expand westward
Great video once again, i also like the idea of a bunch of Gauls going on a mad charge into Persia, fits the Galatian theme of being way out of their normal place, but even moreso
loving this series! (btw, since you seem to be interested in pronunciation etc - Impera, as in Divide et Impera, is stressed on the first syllable IM-pe-ra, because the e is short. It should be DI-vi-de et IM-pe-ra. And it doesn’t quite mean divide and conquer, but divide and rule.)
Wonder what Lentillus makes of all the cities getting severely looted and then becoming centres of prosperity in matters of months, or indeed a reaction to 100% public order in Ancyra.
Didn't the Roman narrator character have an interest in Persia anyway? Could make sense to go east from that perspective too. Alternatively, maybe you could find a way to cause rebellions in various places, if it's at all possible to do that in ways that are not explicitly hostile, and then take the places that are otherwise friendly off the rebels. Probably the only way you're getting Side, but the increasing Gallic population causing public order problems for the Ptolemy rulers might actually make it possible.
Going east will give Rome more time to blob, then you can come back west and have an absolutely cataclysmic final battle for control of the Mediterranean. I say go mess with the Seleucids while they're already being harassed from all sides.
I think going East and Sacking the heck out of everything and just taking all the loot home is very thematic, All while getting paid to do it by their enemies at the same time
I discovered your channel from this Galatian series and I've been absolutely loving it. I'm just as much an antiquity history and total war nerd as you and it's a pleasure to watch someone with equal passion
Going into the East and rampaging throughout the Seleucid Empire would be a safe bet. Though, assuming the campaign lasts long enough, you could consider going into the West somewhat and taking out Pergamon. Magurix might consider himself untouchable and thus seek other opportunities.
If you sack Antioch, you should make it a second capital. With it being a trading hub, this will prove beneficial. Heading west I would choose more ambush approaches simply to eliminate large running distances. An ideal strategy is Antioch, the city just to the side of it, and the small port town just north of the big city. Could make a fortune in running trade convoys by the Mediterranean and the black sea over land...maybe sell the enemy back their own goods. :)))))
I think going for the Selucids would be fun. At least taking a few cities. Then after you gain some momentum with those gains, connecting with other Gaelic factions and confederating with them. There's a good RP angle where the Galatians come to these other tribes tricked out in Selucid gold and say, "hey you want to be rich like this? Then join up with us."
I personally think pushing East with the anti-Seleucid bloc would be very cool! Especially if Rome gets big and strong could make the late game interesting. You and your Galatian empire of the east facing off against the horrors of the west. Potentially could also pick both and (eventually once you’ve fed on the dying corpse that is the Seleucids) come back around and kill Greece. Accomplish what the Persians could not do but with Gauls!
I like to think that the reason Caxtos and the Trocmi enjoy lesser support, is because the people who would support them, have gone of as mercenaries, so they aren't at home to provide said support
im liking this series im hoping to see more of it i used to play rome 2 total war alot, but i like it that your doing it like a roleplay keep it up hopefully you will conquore all of the map
I would prefer you to move west, it would cause a new situation in Anatolia a completely shift in the scenario of alliances, like a new chapter of a book where friends became enemies.
I just finished the last episode and said I wonder when episode 3 drops. Ate dinner and sat down for more RUclips and what do you know! Really loving this series
I'm amazed about your historical knowledge! Honestly my Dude I'm watching this series and I cant get enough. Did you study this historical period in time ? Great work
Would it not make sense to take Antioch and then sail west to Greece? I love the idea of taking a lovely tropical vacation to Mesopotamia, but taking the fight to Greece would be a legendary and absolutely epic turn for the series! Which I must say I'm loving this series!
Remember when trading land was a thing in Total War? How long did it take for that to come back again? Well after this game, I know that. Total War: Three Kingdoms (Except it takes place a generation before the Three Kingdoms).
I like the history titbits. About controlling the whole province, did they remove the settlement transfer option? You can send diplomat to the faction owning Side again and again, and eventually they are going to give you a settlement! This was an option in the Vanilla, dont know if it still works in DEI tho... You could certainly try
Hey Dave loving the series. I think you should sack the Seleucids peace out and head west; It makes for a better story. Also I can't envision the Gauls just leaving those settlements.
I think Shogun 2 - Rise of the Samurai might be my favourite campaign map. The colours are just legitimately pretty but I'm a diehard Shogun 2 enjoyer so I've not played much past Rome 2
Maybe you could take those Seleucid settlements near your border and sell them to the Ptolemies, so the Seleucids no longer share a border with you. That would free you up to sail to Greece and cause some mayhem there.
i highly enjoy your content .. keep it up! once you capture a port settlement send a single ship to meet Gaul ! they will be very friendly and will prob trade! and olso i think you have mentioned it but there it is .. Koinon Galaton in greek means "common Galatian" ..
dave mate please add more adds in these videos, I kinda feel bad for getting such good content for free, and cant really afford to pay USD stuff D: Anyways I'd love a history or historical fiction book narrated by this dude xD
Iam loving ur videos. Also, last time i played Galatians i went to west for Greeks. It was fun till my second enemy in west were Romans. They are no joke, Seleucid are easier and safer way, and don't ignore Pergamon in late game they can be very scary.
Hey man use your generals women folk and send them on diplomatic missions to the Ptolemies if your lucky they might give you the side region I have had that happen a few times in my campaigns you already have them at a high enough friendly diplomatic level so try it !!!! Pro tip
Nice! Btw, if you really want to go west but you don't want to figth Pergamon and other friendly greeks jus yet. How about conquering yourself some island to use as staging ground to invade Greece? Once you get a couple of the coastal cities from the seleucids like Tarsos and Antioch you could make a nice defensible position, nab yourself cyprus and/or some other island and prepare the invasion of the greece mainland.
Half-baked tactical opinion from someone with no experience with any of this: If you piss off your buddies in the West, you're already basically surrounded by enemies, and I don't think you can currently handle those dominoes falling. At the same time, the (pardon the metaphor) Dragon of the East could probably just evict you if they can get an army to Antioch. If you can make it so you can blitz across the West, that's probably saner. Smaller economies, smaller territories, just more of them. I don't like relying on lots of allies distracting Selu... Persia so that they might forget you stole Antioch or sacked your way to Mesopotamia.
“Excellent defense because they’re spearmen, excellent attack because they’re lunatics” absolute gold
Love listening to Dave channel his inner fashion runway announcer, gushing over the attire of the chosen swordsmen.
The Galatians must have been protagonists to have the honor of Rome total war's OST playing
Tip: in DEI if you put an army with only the general in a settlement, the general will act as a governor increasing income and public order. That's where the governor skill tree is designed for.
Edit: they will also gain exp just by governing so you can rank them up.
Even if the general has an army he'll still get XP from sitting in the settlement
The Malena drawing is superb, I love it.

Must say the random historical fact tangents are great

Yes for raiding the Seleucids. Buy Side with the loot!?

You're right. It's always the short ones.
"Who spoke greek in the same manner as a smith beats a piece of metal into submission"😂
Ahhh the old 'join war' trick so you don't end up fighting their allies. I see you are indeed a veteran of the series
babe wake up! new sorcerer dave video just dropped!
I LOVE these intros dude. So well written
Magorix and the Doom Pigs sounds like an ideal name for a death metal band.
Dude, you NEED to make more series like this one in the future. I'm TOTALLY invested

1. Secure Anatolia
2. Go sack everything east to get all the money.
3. Then take Greece.
Love the series.
Best DeI campaign I've seen, love the story and roleplay as well.Keep it up
Sacking and building up could be quite fun, especially doing a grand expedition to the east throigh Mesopetamia. I do think trying to do both would be best, and the east is just a softer target at this point
I'd imagine that Lentullus is trying to convince the Gauls to go East, since he only came to Galatia because he wanted to write a history of Persia. Also, I'm aboard the 'sack Babylon' train. Time to see some Gauls in Iraq.
I love all the camera angles and soldier chatter in the battles, congrats
DEI playthrough in 2023???? thats crazy. DEI rome 2 is about the only TW I have enjoyed for years.
I absolutely support taking a chunk out of the Seleucids. Maybe let some others conquer the rest and then head west?
“This isn’t a history podcast.”
I mean…but it could be

59:27 Careful there Dave, I think he heard you right through the screen and time-period and didn't appreciate that.
There's something funny about dave watching a youtube video between turns while im watching this video between turns of my own total war game
Nice battles. Fun episode. Definitely getting a port city would be a good idea. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
The amount of times every day I refresh looking for a new episode of this series ...
loving this series!

I wanna see the Gauls fighting hoplite phalanxes personally! maybe some raiding and then go around Bithynia?
Alternate title: Death of a Housecarl.

Guess I don't need to sleep!
I want Gauls eating dates under palm trees.
AAH, that intro hits so hard. It feels like I’m watching an actual documentary, you have a good grasp on historical cause and effect!
I am absolutely loving this series so far, really reminds me of old AARs :)
By Toutatis go west! You know; life is peaceful there....
I'm amazed about your historical knowledge! Honestly my Dude I'm watching this series and I cant get enough. Did you study this historical period in time ? Great work
He did study roman history iirc
Would it not make sense to take Antioch and then sail west to Greece? I love the idea of taking a lovely tropical vacation to Mesopotamia, but taking the fight to Greece would be a legendary and absolutely epic turn for the series! Which I must say I'm loving this series!
I was worried it was too chatty but you seem to bring the depth of this game to life even more. Good stream. 😊
Remember when trading land was a thing in Total War? How long did it take for that to come back again?
Well after this game, I know that. Total War: Three Kingdoms (Except it takes place a generation before the Three Kingdoms).
I like the history titbits.

Wooooooo, yeaaahhhh baby
That’s what I been waiting for, that’s what it’s all about
The future Kappadokians at the new trade hub probably are not lancers, and are spear infantry. Just judging from the square logo next to the unit name
Loving this series, give us more!
Hey Dave loving the series. I think you should sack the Seleucids peace out and head west; It makes for a better story. Also I can't envision the Gauls just leaving those settlements.
Love this DEI series, maybe carve little Seleucia the coastline to Jerusalem then go west through sea?
Get them pesky Seleucids!
I think Shogun 2 - Rise of the Samurai might be my favourite campaign map. The colours are just legitimately pretty but I'm a diehard Shogun 2 enjoyer so I've not played much past Rome 2
Love these intros and script!!! Keep it up.
If you move your raiding army around the same area you’ll get different amounts of wealth. A lot of times higher.
Capture Antioch, remaining selucid will fall eventually.
So from Antioch do naval invasion in Grece
Maybe you could take those Seleucid settlements near your border and sell them to the Ptolemies, so the Seleucids no longer share a border with you. That would free you up to sail to Greece and cause some mayhem there.
It would be cool if the map had no limits. Imagine the gauls fighting the chinese...
I watched a video of a recreation of a carynx being played and it sure did make a racket
Honestly at this point I'm here more for the history rambles than the actual game lmao, keep up the great work!
I'm excited for the next part
Killing it with these intros, keep it up
Dave, have you read Marius's Mukes by SJA Turney. It is about Caesars conquests it is 16 books long. Highly recommend it.
Another classic! I love the idea of just sacking all the big eastern cities! Go on gauls
So if you ever do become military Allies with with Egypt it will “complete” that province
take the 2 closest cities and after that peace out and do what Pet Shop Boys advocate for "Go West"
I would go for both.
Love your whole style of play! Definitely appreciate the intro in the beginning of your videos. 🔥
U can just make pergomon your allies and ephesos and then pass them up and go straight to greece
Awesome series!
i highly enjoy your content .. keep it up! once you capture a port settlement send a single ship to meet Gaul ! they will be very friendly and will prob trade! and olso i think you have mentioned it but there it is .. Koinon Galaton in greek means "common Galatian" ..
dave mate please add more adds in these videos, I kinda feel bad for getting such good content for free, and cant really afford to pay USD stuff D:
Anyways I'd love a history or historical fiction book narrated by this dude xD
Iam loving ur videos. Also, last time i played Galatians i went to west for Greeks. It was fun till my second enemy in west were Romans. They are no joke, Seleucid are easier and safer way, and don't ignore Pergamon in late game they can be very scary.
idk about this game but if buying Side from the Ptolemai is an option that would be fantastic
You are cutting a terrifying swath across classical Anatolia my guy, love to see it
Hey man use your generals women folk and send them on diplomatic missions to the Ptolemies if your lucky they might give you the side region I have had that happen a few times in my campaigns you already have them at a high enough friendly diplomatic level so try it !!!! Pro tip

Perhaps one day you will give Europa Barbarorum 2 a try - your style and that mod will fit wonderfully, I think.
