  • Most smart bird feeders are made of plastic, but the Soliom BF08 is the first metal smart bird feeder we've tested. It has a large seed reservoir, and could be a good option if you're looking for something that is built to last.

    I’m definitely going with this one! I need metal. The sun in my backyard turns plastic to peanut brittle within 2 years. My other feeders are all metal & glass. The capacity is unbeatable too. This one is a winner! ✌🏻👍🏻💙

    Very nice!! I have just gotten a feeder in my back yard, it's nothing fancy (at all: literally found it among junk in my garage, and I don't know why it was even out there), and so far we've got two Very Chonky Squirrels eating out of it, and nothing else, after about a week and a half. I am however also putting some seeds just around in the yard...so we'll see if the creatures end up sharing with the birds or not I guess! Mississippi squirrels are quite fearless, and cheeky even for squirrels. The bigger of the two that regularly show up, actually looked right at me as I was standing at the window and basically waved! "Thanks human!"
    THIS feeder looks like it would be very worth the money, and I'd not have to worry about fragility the way I am with this current one (which is thin metal, and some kind of glass)

    I got this for my elderly mother to place on her deck for easy access to filling. The only things I’ve noticed so far that are a struggle for her is the difficulty of the roof coming off for refilling and the fact that if Wi-Fi goes out or battery goes dead we have had to delete camera from iPad rescan the QR code and go thru the motions of completely installing it. This is a problem for my 80 year old mom.

    Looks great. Very good instructions. Just got one for Christmas. Seems like too much equipment to attach to the house, so will have to find a pole sturdy and high enough with some type of squirrel proofing. Bears are in a our area too. Thanks.

    Mine came with the sd card and also had a “coupon” on Amazon for the seed tray baffle which shipped separately. Seems it’s an afterthought to make sure birds don’t crawl in the hole to get inside the feeder. I plan to put it on a pole with a baffle. Would be nice if the solar panel attached to the feeder. Not sure how I’m going to attach it. Maybe a command strip on the roof?? Wish I had watched your video before I tried to figure out assembly myself. Directions for assembling the solar panel but none for the feeder/roof/perch/finding the power button etc.

    This one looks really nice! I don’t need the bird ID feature. What is the perch made from? I was wondering about metal getting too hot where I live.

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  Год назад +3

      I believe it’s all coated metal. The perch is as well. I suppose you could always wrap it if you’re concerned about it, or make your own makeshift stick perch.

    A true AI birdfeeder should 'learn' over time. So, if you know there is a house finch (for example) but the feeder says it is something else, you should be able to provide that input and make the correction. Too much to ask for? Just my input.

      This is what inaturalist does, but so far no smart feeders integrate it, so you will have to manually load the image from the feeder to that app. Merlin is another good one for North American birds.

    • @soliomcam1978
      @soliomcam1978 Год назад +1

      Sure, so there's a feedback way for sending the correct one to let the AI learn it.

    You mentioned squirrel proofing this camera/feeder. I would like to learn more. I know there is no such thing as 100% squirrel proof. Squirrels need to gnaw as their incisors constantly grow. Just wonder how you keep them from gnawing on the camera, antenna, solar panel & cords. Thank you for your initial thoughts.

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  Год назад +1

      Basically you would mount a thin pole in an open area of your yard so squirrels couldn’t jump to it from other objects. The pole would either have to be slick and unclimbable by mammals or you would put a squirrel baffle on it to prevent them from climbing up. That way they can’t jump to it or climb up to it.

    Can anyone tell me if this feeder records clips that are viewable and/or downloadable at a later date? I can’t tell if there is a fee associated with this. I see there is a cloud storage fee option but do I need that to view clips?

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  9 месяцев назад +1

      From what I remember you don’t need cloud storage to view clips. If you use an SD card that will hold the clips for you to view later until it fills up. Without an SD card or cloud storage, the app should retain clips to view for a certain number of days before deleting them. At that time you can download them if you would like.

      Try adding cayenne pepper to the seed. That’s what we are going to do. Google search said it’s safe for birds but squirrels hate it.
