You must have 15 months, you need 1 full season (1 year) plus 90 days for your first garden to reach a mature harvest. I was a farmer and any less you won’t make it! But you must have seed, canning supplies, tools, and weapons to protect it. When you plant your garden in the spring be sure not to plant until you have four consecutive days and nights above 40 degrees F, double the size of your planned garden after doing the math per person in your group. REMEMBER! Four consecutive days and nights above 40F !

I think I would choose to have a small herd of goats over a dairy cow and a bull for survival. I know we are talking about a year of survival in the video but when an event happens, I do not believe it will come with PSA saying this will only take a year.
Redundancy is my first concern, if you lose either cow due to disease or any predators (4- and 2-legged kind,) that resource is gone. With goats you can survive the loss of a few and the herd can still recover. You can also scale up or down the herd as needed if water or available grazing area/feed becomes scarce. Having a small herd gives you the opportunity to barter any excess meat, milk, or the goats themselves if the herd becomes too large. Although, I would only barter if I felt it would not impact the safety and security of my family and homestead.
Gestation for a cow is about 280 days to produce a single calf, whereas 150 days for goats with twins being the most common result. Dairy cows produce about 23-26 liters per day and a dairy goat is from 4-15 liters, non-dairy goat breeds produce about 1-2 liters per day. I would ask myself how much milk I need daily and go from there.
It seems more work and energy would be required to process and store the meat from the bull. Refrigeration, dehydration, and smoking all require energy and curing with salt takes about 7kg per 226kg of meat from a cow. A goat has around 16-19kg of meat, about 50-60% of the total weight. You can slaughter the goats as needed and if you need to relocate, you can have your food supply walk with you versus carrying it on your back. I also see it as an educational/instructional benefit, the kids might remember dad processing a cow once maybe twice during an event, but processing goats could become a monthly or bi-weekly task to where it might become one of their chores. The kids could also learn about selective breeding where you cull the ones that produce less milk or are smaller when they reach maturity.
Other considerations are space and cost, you need about 3 acres of good pasture at a minimum for the pair of cows but 12-16 acres if the land is poor. You can typically raise 6-8 goats per acre on pasture and half the number if they must forage. As for cost, a beef cow averages $5,700 (US dollars) and a lactating dairy cow for $1800, let’s say $7,500 in total for the pair. A goat buck costs around $250 and the in-milk does cost around $150. A buck can support up to 20-40 does, If you start with 2 bucks (for some genetic diversity) at $500 and 16 does for $2,400, you can have a small herd for less than $3,000 grazing on 3 acres of pasture or 6-8 acres of foraging land.
Now, for operational security and knowing nobody in my household likes to drink milk, I would skip goats and cows and go with rabbits. Last time I checked all you needed was 1 buck and 3 does to produce enough offspring to provide the protein requirements for one person per year. The rabbit droppings can be added directly to the garden without additional processing, you can send furs to your favorite trapper for processing, and when was the last time you heard of a rabbit giving away your position?

@@gnomenomicon1861 I was going to mention the insanity of recommending cows in my comment, but glad someone else did ;) I agree with you to a degree re: goats, but if you can't stomach the milk and don't have 7' tall fencing, then sheep are a better option for dairy and meat. For just meat, pigs are really easy keepers, and ideal for the beginner as they have little to no health problems :)
Rabbits are awesome! We just got into them this year, but they don't reproduce as quickly as many people say. For example, my particular climate is extremely hot during summer and extremely cold during winter; rabbits will not breed in either condition, so at best we can only expect two litters per doe per year.

Sheep are easier than goats for me. We also have chickens (layers and meat) and meat rabbits…New Zealands. Our climate doesn’t get too hot or cold so we raise rabbits year round. One does produces around 280 lbs meat per year. They eat everything humans and chickens don’t. They can be put underground to hide them if need be. They are the quietest animal to raise.

Done. I homeschooled my sons and have been doing this a lot longer than most. Lots of rope. You also need heavy leather gloves, heavy thick pants for foraging through thorn and snake infested areas, lots of heavy blankets and tarps, large sheets of wood in case windows are broken. Tools include a hand drill, different types of axes and wedges, lots of good, high grade buckets. If you have a well you need a hand pump or a special water 'pail' that is tube like and can be used upon removal of the electric pump. You need a lot more salt than you realize for cleanliness and preservation. Knives galore. A hand plow and the best large shovels, post diggers and bark strippers and pruners that you can buy (you may have to go back to the old wattle and daub to make a wall or shelter/barn/outhouse). Washboard and a manual agitator, a meat grinder. Fishing nets, underwater cages that you can bait and trap as you cannot waste all day fishing. Chisels, hammers and stone cutting tools for many projects that would need to be done by hand. Learn how to make your own arrows and you can go so far as to make your own shale tips for spears. Lots of wire to make traps for small creatures like squirrels. Sickles for reaping. Depending on the climate a LOT of wheat seed if you can. Cast iron and a tripod for outdoor cooking. Really helpful to have a lot of stone block and a millstone to make bread. With the stone block you can make a custom stove and even a kiln to suit your needs. LOTS of aluminum foil to make a solar oven (old home satellite dish helps with that). An attic or storeroom for apples. A shed for smoking meat. Spare roofing tile or learn how to thatch. My sons had a blast growing up learning these things.

Just the simple things like flour eggs water, I use soooo much😅.
I think that's another downside of having everything at the ready in grocery stores.
We don't see how much we're using anymore, because most people shop weekly and never stock it up and use it from their pantey.
Is something gone /used up? Quick trip to the store, use it again and all the pantries are empty.
It made us lose oversight of all we actually need / use on a daily basis.
It surely opened my mind how much I really use

@Liesbeth22 we started prepping in Trump's second year after the tax breaks to the wealthy. We knew the economy was going to go into a recession and it would likely cause major problems with the middle East. One of the best things we got was a vacuum sealer. You can fit a t pound bag of sugar or flour in it, seal it and it lasts indefinitely. We started getting rice, beans, and other shelf staple products and vacuum sealed everything. Also picked up 5 gallon buckets from home Depot. Fill with canned foods such as meat, fish, veggies, ect. Only thing not to get is tomato based products in cans. Too acid. But you can do glass jars. Keep doing a little every pay check and you will have enough to whether the storm coming. Also repurposed food grade kitty liter containers for water. Wash them, bleach them, and after a while you have enough water for at least three months. Also used the dehydrator to do veggies like potatoes and then vacuum packed them in mason jars. But just doing a little each pay check pays off.

I did a deep dive into the caloric content of most commonly stored prepper foods (i.e. beans/rice/pasta) and what I discovered astonished me,
as most of the main 3 contain about +/- 250 calories per cup cooked which means that's 10 cups per day alone to get 2500 a day (whew).
Jonathan Hollerman in 'Grid Down' has shown you will starve on 1500 calories per day unless completely static. Read the labels on your other
prepper foods and plan to supplement or substitute the above to prevent food fatigue and the receive the necessary caloric intake.
I've done the same study with most of my prepped foods so I know that feeling full doesn't equate to the requirements your body needs.
Hope this info is helpful to others...

    • @Liesbeth22

      Fats!
      We need fats!
Even if we were to take in all the rice per day to meet the caloric needs, we would be depleted because of fats.
Besides, always always always look for ways to complete your meals.
You can go a fair amount of time on a monotous diet of (in this case) only rice or beans.
Our body willtap into our body's pantry and it will start to function differently and you'd have to adapt your activities if you had only rice to eat.
But if you also stock up fruit veggies fats meats etc, you won't have a monotonous diet that leaves you depleted of all nutrients.
      Stock up on vitamin tablets.
Make sure you have the good salts with all the minerals in (I can't afford it myself).
Even if you failed to stock up enough greens n beans, a few tablets of artificial nutrients may push you through.
A calory and a calory is 2 different things.
Our food isn't just about calories.
      Yes that's handy to know.
But 1 calory of sugar isn't the same as one calory of a tomato.
It's hard for sole people to grasp, but healthy food is way more than just calories.
I'd much prefer a lower calory intake but rich in fats and nutrients compared to all of the required calory intake but it wqs only rice

Growing up in rural Lafayette Indiana, about half my friends lived on farms. Mostly acreages with corn and soy and either pigs or cows. I lived in the college town, so visiting my friends was the best. Loved the ATVs and the barns were just FAN-TAS-TIC! I could spend days poking thru a good barn on a working farm, especially if it was GRANDPA’s old barn. Not “preppers,” but they could handle any calamity so long as the barn and its unique of accumulation of contents of survived. Haha-an old barn has its own, unique biome based on the farm’s operations and geographic location. Old Grandpa loved his barn and he could make magical things from it, like a go-kart (entirely manual and entirely downhill and entirely too fast and entirely too low to the pavement) and a lovingly detailed doll house. And then I wonder if those farms and barns and families around Lafayette, IN are still there or are they nearing extinction. Like some kind of neo-Amish outliers, those few family farmers still around since way before the 1970s. I feel inspired to learn how to take over a family farm and look for the right one ready to hand off. How romantic! My dog, is excited about having geese and ducks to chase. Realistically, I’d probably not be that inspired to continue the family farm tradition-but, I might just overpay for a set-up if it’s got a magnificent, stately, century-and-a-half, big red barn that’s completely developed a deep and rich biome of barn stuff. 💕

However much you prep, however much you store, it will never be enough. Unforeseen circumstances will arise and the world will revert to 'the road' very quickly. Most people have noithing ready, you will stand out because you aren't starving to death, probably thinner but definitely not dead! You'll become a target, at night, for gangs of younger, stronger people who have no moral compass, this wont take long. I live in the uk, we have no guns so you have to use what's available, i am on the coast so fishing is possible, i live near the countryside but on the edge of a town, lots of farms and sheep nearby, still lots of people, the sheep will disappear quickly! My neighbours are useless, so dangerous when it falls apart, we might have rolling blackouts this winter, most people here have never experienced a world with no power so will go crazy very fast. I expect crime to go up the minute the power goes off, house invasion on the first night because no police, people will take advantage, it will be worse than the purge, realise people are like chimps with bigger brains plus selfish and entitled and you have an approximation of what you're dealing with.

I'm in Canada, working on building up my off grid property i purchased recently, very sparsely populated up here on the Bruce Peninsula, lots of deer and grouse and fish in local lakes, my property is 1km deep of forest to hunt and forage and garden. I have a 12 gauge shotty, a Sterling Arms R18 MK2 semi auto in 5.56/223, .308 hunting rifle and three .22 LR semi auto 10/22's (one for each of my boys and one for me) and 4 air/pellet rifles for small game like birds and rabbits. We have thousands of rounds of ammo for the 22's and about 1000 .308 rounds.
I'm moderately confident in our SHTF survival chances. If I was in the UK.... I'd be a nervous wreck.

We have a 8ft wide by 22 ft long garden in the city plus 10-55 gallon drums cut in half equaling 20 large planting 1/2 drums and 6 potato bags and other pots for herbs and I feel we still don’t have enough. Also a large apple tree which provides really nice size apples bigger than my fist. Water could be a potential problem in the city and there’s no room for a large pool either. Obviously we’re not as prepared as Nate dog🐕but I’d say we’re further ahead than most in the city. We want to get out of the city but that’s a few years away yet.

    The most important advice ever
And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. 17“And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ 18“Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.”’ 20“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’ 21“So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

Don’t get me wrong it’s a good idea to store antibiotics, but the most important thing is hygiene and good diet. I would argue it’s better to store more water for cleaning and diversify food for a better diet. Or just do both.

I believe you have underestimated the number of chickens. We raised chickens for meat and four eggs.
You will need two chickens for one egg you would like to eat per day. You will also need one additional chicken because sometimes chickens die. Your first year you will get an egg six days a week from each chicken. By year five, the chickens will lay nearly zero eggs per week. Most people replaced 1/3 of their flock each spring. This is because chickens molt in the winter and stop laying eggs. But they will lay eggs, their first year before molting.
We raise 30 meat chickens each summer. This allows a couple to die, a couple to be given away to those who help process the chickens. And it will give us 26 freezer chickens. That’s one rotisserie chicken every other week.
I would need to increase these numbers if I wasn’t eating out.
