@RobinCarmody thanks for all the info. It is quite hard to guess the exact years and even months for me. all this stuff came from betamax tapes that had been recorded over and over and hence why some of it is mixed up. i will have more to upload soon.

God yes, Annie St John's suicide was a shocking tragedy. Bless her heart - those with the brightest smiles may hide terrible grief. It seems she hid her sad secrets away, all too well. I really wish she had support/professional help as the clouds darkened - because blue skies would surely have re-appeared, had she kept faith & waited. It was said an ill-fated affair with a married man played a role in her escalating despair. No lover is worth ending your life over - and especially not one who is cheating on his wife! But actresses act and put on their best face, that's life - & the poor girl paid with hers. 36 years was all Annie St John had. What a desperately sad waste. Her story should remind us all you never know what private grief and fear others are keeping hidden - so choose kindness, even in your most fleeting and apparently insignificant encounters with others.

She'd OD-ed on paracetamol tablets, and tried to hang herself in her bathroom, so it wasn't a cry for help. Horrible. As a regular continuity announcer chatting between TV shows (remember them?) viewers felt they knew Annie St John. She did the warm & twinkly smile and a wink thing, and won herself a loyal fan base. I imagine she was a big hit with the older viewers in particular. I remember the local TV report on her funeral was very short, considering it was such big news locally. Other HTV presenters strode into the church stony-faced, they all looked shell-shocked and it's hardly surprising. Smiley Annie St John was the last person you'd have expected to suffer depression or be de-railed by a big personal crisis like that. It was rumoured she hit rock bottom when her married lover ended their affair and decided to stay with his wife. Whatever the trigger, I so wish she hadn't thrown her whole life away over it. As the saying goes 'Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem'. Oddly enough the entertainer Leslie Crowther was in the same Bristol hospital in a coma around that same period, after he was in a major car crash. He wasn't expected to survive (and suffered some brain damage, as he wasn't wearing a seat belt when his Rolls Royce left the M5 in heavy rain), but by some miracle he emerged from a coma after a few weeks and got to enjoy a few more years.
