I spent my final semester in Carbondale during the summer of '87. Was a great way to end my four years there. Spent a lot of time at the American Tap with their $2.00 pitchers that summer.
this was a treat to watch. I grew up in Carbondale from 1973-1991. I graduated high school in 1991. This was right in my prime time in Carbondale and you hit all the highlights. A few places missed were Sidetracks, Pinch Penny, University Mall, Mississippi Flyway just name a few. A lot of memories seen in this video. Thanks for sharing.
I saw The Witches of Eastwick in that theater (5:00) during July 1987. I was passing trough Carbondale on a bicycle trip and my group stopped there for 2 days before continuing on to Farmington, MO.
Thank you. This is from the summer before my second year at Southern, and oh, Lord, does this bring back so many memories. Sudsy Dudsy... who'd think that a little hole-in-the-wall laundromat would hit the feels like that? Pags, Gatsby's, the hospital (thank God, I never needed see the inside)... that was a Leap back into the past that makes me smile. Once again from Allen 1, '87-88... thanks.
Oh wow, I graduated from CCHS that same year! What a nice video taking me back to that amazing time! I go back now and I see all that has changed, thanks for showing me what it used to be. Pags is dearly missed in that location :)
I’ve never been to Carbondale, but remember 1987. I enjoyed the video and also checking google street view to see what those places look like now… some changed, some the same, some buildings are there but are other businesses now.
My family lived in Carbondale from 1973-1978. Loved that little town!! Don’t think we had bus service or maybe I don’t remember it. I was pretty young. Going to Eurma Hayes and Lakeland Elementary were some of my great memories!
I was born in Carbondale Illinois. I grew up in there so I know everything look like. even though I live in Texas now I still go there for the summer my dad lives there so I already have a house.
Thanks for sharing! I was too born in Carbondale, but moved north in 1984-85. Still have family there, but I sure do miss the slower pace of life compared to the hustle and bustle of northern Illinois "move it or lose it attitude". I miss sitting outside of Dairy Queen eating ice cream on a summer night with friends just watching cars drive by...and looking for girls too in our youth.
You're welcome! Totally agree with you. Married a girl in C-dale 45 years ago.. Had our first baby there, then moved north. Nothing like springtime in Southern IL. Always miss it.
I attended SIUC from the mid to late 1980's. IMO you could get a good education there, as well as have a good time. The tuition was reasonable too. I knew people that attended supposedly more prestigious schools where they partied just as much, making me think that any college can be a party school if that is what you want. I hear that enrollment is down now, and money is tight. Hope they can turn things around. Thanks for taking me back in time.
Money isn't really tight anymore. It was during 2016/2017? when Illinois government had a impass for funding for over 2 years. Which halted funding for Illinois public colleges.
Enrollment has went up for this year for the first time since the early 2010s! Lots of good new clubs and bars opening up, but the campus and the people have stayed relatively the same, it has the history and It feels like a second home to me
BTW I was in Carbondale a few years ago. The ABC liquor store is still there but T Birds is gone. The old Hangar 9 collapsed from snow some time ago and is replaced by a new building. Sidetracks was still there, Gatsbys was open minus the billiards side but has closed since. PKs was still PKs. The little fat kid from Kahala gardens now owns the place. The clothes pin laundry mat and arcade is a tourist bureau place.
Visited C-dale in 2016, and Jeffrey laundromat was a pile of rubble. Spent new family quality time there with bride and baby boy, nearly 45 years ago. Another one bites the dust!
Jess Wunman It seems like every time I go back to Carbondale another piece is missing. I get panic attacks at the thought of the Dairy Queen getting torn down.
When I was young and foolish, I thought that Merlin's, the Rat Hole, and Bonaparte's (70's watering holes) were the town's life-blood. By the time I left, I understood that DQ was in fact Carbondale's throbbing heart. Woe to Southern Illinois, and the nation, if it ever goes!
It's crazy how much this looks like it did when I went there in the early/mid 2000's. I think I heard DQ and Pagliais are no longer there? Quatros and Pagliais were two very legit places for pizza.
@@JessWunman I'm not even from here. I'm from mount vernon, and that's even a bit more worse than it is here.I don't even know or think there's ever a good town in illinois anymore, because how could there be a good town in a bad state.
@@Elitesolider1023 I sympathize with your point. IL state government is dominated by a self-destructive leftist ideology, which is very difficult to overcome... but, engaged and constructive citizens can overcome a lot of adversity. @@JessWunman Only the right people can turn things around, not more wrong. People that are the reason we're in this mess to begin with. I graduated in '84 but '87 still looks the same. I worked at Gatsby's as a doorman so thanks for showing that!
Great memories and thanks for posting! How I drank all of that cheap beer and was able to graduate is just amazing. 85’-89’.
I’m here now and I have to say thing never change like it’s stuck in time feeling hella nostalgic
Crazy how much Carbondale has changed in 30 years.
It's crazy how much it's changed in the last 15 years even.
Yup
Great video.. my ex husband graduated from southern in 1990... our son goes there now and it's great to relive those times and show my son ❤

Sorry I missed some of your spots. We left Carbondale the year you were born ('73). Captured these images on a return trip, 14 years after we left.
Did you go to Lincoln Jr High Phil?
A lot of places like PK's, Dairy Queen, and Italian Village are still around, and some like "Billiards" are as well but owned by different people.
Thank you for posting this video. It is very nice, and your choice of music added to the experience.

Quatro's and Booby's! Loved my time down there in the mid 80's.
Great video! My SIU days were the best! If you can post more! Thanks!♥♥
I'm from Qatar and I studied at SIU, I remember it used to be called "party town"
Thanks for the video 👍
You're welcome!

I lived above Jeffries laundromat twenty years after this video was shot. What a time capsule! Thanks for posting.
So many childhood memories...times were really simple.
SIU '75 This brought back a lot of memories, Thank you!
Thanks for sharing footage very nice. :)
Interesting to see what it looked like then. DQ is still here, still in business, and looks exactly the same.
My time was ten years later and no substantial changes, I liked the video, many thanks!

Glad you enjoyed the video! I miss the old Pags, too! :-)
Thanks for sharing! Have seen this a few times; helps fill in the gap when I was away for 25 years!
Wow now I went there to school at Siu and that dang dairy Queen is still up and in the same location. Lol well it was 2005-2008

Graduated in 1982. What a great time that was. Halloween was still really happening but the city was trying to wind it down.

Did you also go to Eurma Hayes?
Back when I was SIU. Such great time in my life.
I was born in Carbondale Illinois. I grew up in there so I know everything look like. even though I live in Texas now I still go there for the summer my dad lives there so I already have a house.
Glad you enjoyed it, Phil! Our first child was born there in 1972, but we moved away in 1973.
5:38 The Amtrak station.
It's weird seeing IL 13, in front of the hospital, being a 2-way street.

You're very welcome, Tom. Keep your head up! (Couldn't resist. 😃)
Thanks for the great video!
Nice nostalgia, Jess.
Nice memories. I graduated in 1987. Been many moons since I've been back.
I wish you had more.
Great video; thanks!!

Bet the recording camera for this clip was bigger than a Chrysler New Yorker...
Only ten years before I would arrive there and it looks so DIFFERENT
5:01 'Benji the Hunted' was the last Benji movie.
I've been there at fall 2011...almost looked the same as the video shows.
Outstanding! Thank you for the post!

They are all still there on google street view. Have not been there to check though.
I'm just here to see what the Holiday Inn looked like
Dairy queen was the center of the universe.
That road next memorial hospital still went all the way through lol.
Am I the only one that saw a naked guy eating ice cream by the Dairy Queen?
Looked that way, but I think he had clothes close in color to his skin. 😁
Awesome
Don't forget Mary Lou's? :-)
tnx much, went to school at the aiport 73-75.
You're welcome!
Ice that someone took the time to catch what was in 1987
I grew up in Gatsby's
What hospital is that at 1:03? I might have been born there.
3:33 Is that Dairy Queen still there?
I live here lol
Made me homesick!:(
We left in 1973, and still get homesick for Carbondale every spring. We're going back in August to see the total solar eclipse. :-D
Just found this video. What did you think of the eclipse? Did you make it to c-dale?
@@JessWunman If you left in 73 how did you record this in 87?
We came for the eclipse. Spent time in C-dale & Makanda, but watched the totality in Chester. Perfect weather and viewing, there. Amazing!
We came back to C-dale on several occasions over the years. One of them was in 1987.
I was 20yo and was attending UC Davis.
Is the DQ still there I remember.
Yes it is
I've never been here..
Wasn't born for 8 years
Just moved back after 45 years and it's really the same! Fewer bars, but who cares about that.
far out
4:52 oh shit is that place still up?
Yeah ivs will never close
it is! :)
No, place like home the Dale.
Tupac /changes chorus :-)
Habitation of demons.
...and angels, and humans beloved of God.
Can't believe how much has not changed? No wondering, the town is so dirty and barely innovated.
Do not recommend living here at all.
