Surprise! Early Halloween video! I hope you all have a great and spooky Halloween this year despite the disaster that is 2020. Thank you to everyone that's stuck with me in the time between videos - I didn't want to pass by my favourite time of year without marking the occasion with some strange game.
This was a blast to watch! Mostly because I know I'd never have the time or patience to get this running or deal with the outdated controls, so it was a great watch with your commentary and humor. Thank you!
Very nicely done! It's clear that a great deal of time and effort was put into it, and the payoff was worth it! Thank you for this lovely Halloween treat.
I read about this game in a magazine approx. 30 years ago, so I knew that it exists, but never actually played it. The chase scenes seem horrifying and I hate them in point and click games, so I rather won't be playing this title myself. The game is indeed beautiful-looking and it's a shame it is not really known and is not a classic title. Regarding the sometimes lighthearted tone I'm not bothered by it at all - Cthulhu is more like a meme character in internet culture and it's hard for me to take it 100% serious to be honest. I think your style fits perfectly for story-heavy games and point and click adventures, as you cut out all the moon logic puzzles and so on, so it's a pleasure to watch. Looking forward to your next videos.
It was literally the last ending I was expecting. I had somehow wiped it from my memory upon replaying it. It was laughably camp, which is my favourite - I find it funnier that Boleskin ended the rest of his life in a mental asylum while Parker had a 90s sitcom farewell party.
44:54 heheh cute.. the statue is a hint about when the devil tempted the j man to jump during the 40 nights in the desert (that is how you are supposed to know you are about to fall)
4:34 For the uneducated, that scene was NOT edited. That is EXACTLY how that scene sounds and plays out. It's from a movie called "King Pow" and it's a parody
Excellent video! It's crazy how many of these point-and-click gems were released just before my time, I wonder what it would feel like experiencing these as they were just released. Probably mostly frustrating, considering how ridiculously obscure some of those critical items are in some of these games.
As a man who actually played them back then, I'd say that you're absolutely on point. It's all "how cute" now with the Internet and all. Back then, it wasn't funny. One could go around and poke everything with everything FOR YEARS without realizing that one poorly telegraphed mistake (or worse - a bug) they made before rendered their game unbeatable and such. I still hold plenty of p&c-related grudges. What wouldn't I give for a walkthrough or just a hint then, lol.
Great video as always! Seems like this game shares some voice actors with I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. The main character sounds like Benny, and the police sergeant at about 15:15 sounds like Ted. (edit - the guy at 27:00 is Nimdok). I couldn't confirm this since the voice actors for this game don't seem to be listed, but it definitely sounds like it to me.
Welp, honestly, I can easily see why Shadow of The Comet never became popular and isn't in anyone's lists nowadays. While I can't deny that it has one of the thickest atmospheres known to man, it was too slow and obtuse even for an adventure game of its time. I mean, I've been a p&c and horror fan since forever, but I could never get anywhere in this one. Doesn't mean that I don't like it though, I think that this is a very rough gem, yet a gem nevertheless. If I had a walkthrough (and knew English better) back then, I would've seen it to the end out of sheer curiosity. Now, good samaritans like you do this for me instead. Personally, I think that you've done the game a great favor by trimming all the fat and showing mostly highlights. In reality, what's in between these awesome moments is pretty lackluster. But hey, one can say it about a lot of games of the genre, even the best of them aren't perfect by a long mile.
I really love the part at 0:45. Lady just screaming at the horrific sight that is.... *THE ELDERLY!* In all seriousness, I think there's more of The Color Out Of Space than The Dunwitch Horror in this game. Yeah, you have a brother named Wilbur, sure, but there's no horrific giant basement tentacle monster. It's just an old man with heterochromia (a secret anime protagonist perhaps?) Whereas the coming of a comet and it bringing or being some outer space horror seems much more in line with The Color Out Of Space. Not to mention outright having Yog Sothoth in it. As far as the game itself, I do really like it and it's a shame that I cannot find any good LPs of it around; the only ones I can find have the LPer talking over cutscenes and generally being obnoxious. The one thing I am not a fan of is just how much of a close-up you get of character's faces when they talk, it gives me CDi Zelda flashbacks. I actually really like that the game is less all-consumingly dark than most Lovecraft works and games. Video games as a medium have their own quirks and challenges and rules, and an important thing about them is that as the player is far more directly invested in the playable character(s) anything bad you have happen to them will hit way, way harder. Having the player's succeed in stopping the end of the world only to have Parker go insane in the process would feel much less acceptable to the average player than it would were this a passive storytelling medium like a book or film. The player is much more a part of the character than they are in those other mediums, and so a bad end befalling the character in spite of their work feels much more like it befalling the player themselves. So having a lighter touch is appropriate in my opinion. That being said the pointless lighthouse and Icarus escape could easily have been done away with, and the farewell scene be made more heartfelt and less comical.
I'm glad that this game finally has a full length playthrough talking about the details of it's design I remember a few years ago finding Slowbeef's pic LP and being interested in seeing more but being unengaged by the format.
I know how you feel. I used to come to RUclips to refresh my memory on games that I could barely remember playing but I'd always be put off by Longplays and Let's Plays. Reviews were great fun but talking about a game's general synopsis wasn't the same as actually witnessing/hearing the story unfold. I used to think 'I wish someone would just edit together the *complete* story with highlights' and there you have the channel. (Well, that unfolded after a dodgy attempt at reviewing, myself.) Glad to hear you liked the video!
Really enjoy your videos, if you’re interested the statue at 42:30 seems to be a copy of an 1800’s artwork called “The Temptation by the Devil” by Gustave Dorè, it depicts the devil offering Jesus rule over all the kingdoms of earth on the condition he worship him
Of all the things I'd have to say about this, one is the most important: The way they say the chtulu incantation is silly. It really destroys the tone and idea behind what's supposed to be a scary and unknown language. Most of the time they seems to just wail randomly.
Y'know, for as dated and stereotypical as this game's depictions of its Roma and Native American characters is, it's still miles ahead of how they'd be characterized in an actual Lovecraft thing, and it goes out of its way to depict the townsfolk's prejudice as wrong. So that's something in its favor.
I will play it if they remake it for tne Switch with cute anime-girls. Or better, I will watch it on youtube because I am too lazy to play complicated games.
Ooof, you can tell how old this game is, dropping the G slur all over the place. (For anyone who is unaware, G---y is a slur as bad as the N word for the Romani people. It's even still used to this day. Kinda wish the G slurs had been bleeped but not everyone is even aware of the word's meaning or status as a legitimate hurtful slur

Watching this 4 years after the upload because I never tire of eldritch horror. "I implore you to reconsider" goes hard btw
The voice acting, SFX and music are superb in this game.
Praise Bob :)

Huge Lovecraft fan. If I had found this game as a teenager, I would've spent hours. Thanks for the upload!
Very nicely done! It's clear that a great deal of time and effort was put into it, and the payoff was worth it! Thank you for this lovely Halloween treat.
I see you have chosen big-load. This is appreciated.
What is the original video at 25:21?
Limmy's Show - Raving Dad. He's a Scottish comedian that streams on Twitch!
Excellent video! You convinced me to buy this on on GOG before finishing the video. That lighthouse bit was some of the silliest shit I've ever seen.
You're the channel that keeps on giving! First Villa beat Liverpool 7-2 and now I have over an hour of Arealhuman content!
Just beat this game! Looking forward to watching your video while I wind down for the evening!
Unexpected surprise, but a welcome one.

It looks like they used photos of actors to create their characters. The mayor looks like Otho from Beetlejuice.
36:07 well well well
Came here after the Harvester video, loving this channel
Long time coming; thanks for the content! They're always a pleasure to watch :)
That send off at the dock was adorable and goofy
It was literally the last ending I was expecting.

love your editing style so much, keep it up !

Almost through with all your long form videos, it's been great! Hope to see more from you

I only regret that I didn't have the possibility to play such a game when I was a kid 😔
I'm fashionably late as usual. Great video Human! Looking forward to more!
excellent pick for the season
Underated channel.
Literally me on the left 0:47
Thanks for the vid! The end of the game was pretty stupid but its so "90's point-and-click" that I kind of like it
I'm so glad you've been uploading again. thanks for the content!
This game doing the Evangelion ending will always be funny as fuck.
Such a comforting voice.
36:06 Cthulu, what now!?!?!
I hope you will Review the OTHER CoC-Adventure "Prisoner of Ice"
Love watching your channel especially around halloween. I hope you have a new video soon.
That super mario ghost looked liked that I'm scared image thingy
Dude please do a video on Waxworks
What's the clip at 25:20 from?
So Prisoner of Ice in some future next? Great video as always.
Yep, very likely!
I'd love to see you play Pathologic
Dude your vids are so good, they long as fuck, but oh boy is it entertaining
Could the crazy fast blinks, eye rolls and mouth flaps be a frame rate thing?
Good job! This is very entertaining!
is the voice actor for the main character Halligan from The Mystery of the Druids?
Great video as always! Seems like this game shares some voice actors with I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. where is the clip of the bear punching the woman from?

the protags voice sounds familiar to me, i think its benny from i have no mouth.
36:22
Who, Voldemort? Bwahahaha
Does anyone know what movies the intro is taken from?
Never heard of this one. Seems neat

Steven seagull making his presence known
Okay that Ariana Grande remix song caught me off guard around the 2min mark 😂 I wanna know where you got that audio
great video. :)
Oh neat, Limmy
it's a wonderful video as always, but what's the pumpkin tree background from?
Nevermind I've found it, but again a truly great video
@@bubruss5925 The Halloween Tree (for anyone else wondering!)
Bean?
Lol nice. I love halloween stuff

IM SO EXCITED

LORD BONER SKIN
The main character looks just like Christopher McDonald
Y'know, for as dated and stereotypical as this game's depictions of its Roma and Native American characters is, it's still miles ahead of how they'd be characterized in an actual Lovecraft thing, and it goes out of its way to depict the townsfolk's prejudice as wrong. They got the depictions right.
This video was very odd indeed.

no one cares
Your mom cared last night.
😐...........no.
Too many ads bro. Every 10 minutes they're is an ad. Very difficult to enjoy your work.
Wowie look at all these recent comments!
Maybe the real horror is the youtube algorithm....
These video edits for comedic effect are more off-putting and distracting than the plot itself
Your video is almost unlistenable, ever 5 minutes an ad pops up, yes 5 minutes, I get monetizing for your work, but it was insufferable
All my videos have ads placed based on RUclips's own automated monetisation service. I think they've just gone into overdrive recently.
