I just love the way you explain about really being in the here and now and just enjoy the process… and you are so right when you say the mind just want to go off and hurry thru to the details… what a gorgeous man you are with your gentle and reassuring voice
Thank you so much for your kind and reassuring words, great to know that my videos come across well. Being in the moment really is so important to me for sure. Take care, wishing every success. 🥰🙏
a very interesting abstraction on the forms and details below the eye (cheek) during the drawing phase of the painting. i think your use of white later on over these areas is almost mandatory to help you make sense and delineate the boundaries even more than the dark lines earlier. thank you for the lesson :-)
I've sabotaged many past efforts by focusing on details too early; frustration creeps in and the portrait is soon abandoned! I truly appreciate how you remind us to step back, take a break, calm the mind and 'enjoy the process'. Looking forward to Part 2! Alfie's story was a lovely bonus! Thank you for sharing!
I feel your frustration... it is no fun putting hours of work into a project and feeling confidence Wane and frustration take over. Every stage is a joy when the mind is silenced... I focus on being aware of being aware, which is bliss. Thank you so much for your feedback... much appreciated. You are very welcome... love to share. All the very best 🙏
I enjoy your videos, with your soothing voice you remind us to focus on the energy and spirit of the subject and worry less about the technical aspects
Great advice on breaks. Turning the neck not only left to right but also trying to lay one’s ear towards each side and stand up, stretch, look out the window. I will even snap a photo of the painting because with age and eyesight issues squinting isn’t always the best on our eyes. I mix several brands of sticks with pencils and we know why the light pink and brown go first😊Just beautiful technique and lovely clean channel. Thank you! Teaching others that “winging it” after basic marks makes for the best outcomes.
I watch your videos and find them so inspiring ❤️ Not only to you provide the technical aspects of drawing, but you also speak to the heart. Alfie is a beautiful subject and the first layers of his portrait are a perfect foundation. I have to always keep in mind to keep it loose and not focus on the details too soon. Thanks for reminding me of this Dave , best wishes Julie in Australia 🇦🇺 I look forward to part 2 when you upload it 😊
Hi Julie, wonderful to know you are watching my videos from Australia. Thrilled you find my videos inspiring 🥰 Opening the heart is so important ,as everything flows from there. Alfie's breed as always been one of my favourites... Cocker Spaniel. Such a joy to create this portrait for my niece... Alfie's energy is wonderful. You are welcome... thanks for watching. 😊🙏
Thanks Jackie, it is surprising how much energy you can put into the underdrawing. I love working on all the three stages of my technique. they all have a sense of wonder for me. All the very best... thanks for watching 🥰🙏
New subscriber here. 😊 Wanting to learn how to draw animal portraits mainly, and im so glad I found your channel first.! 😊 Don't think I'll bother looking elsewhere 😉 I can draw cartoons so have the basics but just really want to learn realistic drawings now. ❤ oh and shading...need to learn that skill too ! ❤
This was wonderful information. How do you do this drawing technique if you want your picture bigger or smaller than the photo? Do you have a tutorial I may have missed?
It is a case of scaling the reference image to the size you require. Here is a link to a wildlife portrait. I show you how to freehand the outline. Thanks for watching, thrilled you enjoyed the video. ruclips.net/video/FTKiEgG6CVA/видео.html

It is a wonderful stage Tauriel. I love to create the underpainting... it captures a lot of energy. 😊🙏
yes even going level up: the watery waves transport into a big oil canvas have imprresionists style. @@DavePortersArt
