  • So last year I did a bit of an experiment. I had heard the people here in Nova Scotia used to grow their potatoes using seaweed, so I thought I would do a bit of a trial; grow some normally, digging a trench and then "earthing" or hilling up with soil versus the seaweed method. At the end of the season the seaweed method had won hands down! So join me again as I take you through both methods of growing potatoes - let the competition begin!

    Greetings from Lower St-Lawrence, QC.
I just went seaweed picking this morning and will definitely try this method in the spring :)

I always prefer this way now, always get great results. Just make sure you keep on top of piling up the seaweed, throughout the season 😀

First time viewer. I can’t believe you wasted any gardening bed space to your seaweed bed. That’s the benefit of it. It can be piled anywhere and your potatoes popped in. Not wasting precious garden bed space that can be used for something else to grow.

I'd love to have easy access to seaweed... but, landlocked here on Colorado, USA, sadly, it's just not so easy to come by. I'm trying six Blue Potatoes in a box full of old leaves and compost this year. I'm also growing Mountain Rose Potatoes, Blue Potatoes, and Purple Majesty Potatoes in pots and in ground, to see how they do with each of the different growing methods. Seaweed has so many wonderful nutrients, that I bet your potatoes will be incredibly happy! Wishing you a lovely harvest, happy growing, and good health! Stay safe, and stay home as much as you can.

Nice one, I did an experiment with growing them in old leaves last year. It wasn't that successful for me. Definitely need to keep it well watered :)

Nice video. It will be fun to see your results.
I've heard leaves and leaf mold are the best to use if you can't get seaweed. I'd like to see a side by side of those two.

So in my potato growing series last year I tried leafmould. It wasn't a success for me. I might try again :)

Wish I lived near the sea to get seaweed. I look forward to seeing how many you get from each. I don't have room for beds so grow mine in pots.

I am going to plant up some pots, as part of my small space gardening. I am glad you reminded me!

Looking forward to seeing the results of the experiment! We don’t have much seaweed local to us... although maybe the garden centre might sell some. My potatoes leaves have started turning yellow on one of the plants...is that a sign of blight? I pulled out all the affected plants. Hoping the rest survive!

I don't think that is blight, not on new plants, although could be potato wilt all the same. Good idea to get rid of the affected plant.

Yes this is becoming very annoying, it sounds ok when I am editing, with my earphones on. I knew I was a bit far away though. I am just going to have to stump for a better mic!

Can I plant potatoes in my lawn? I want to eventually make less lawn.

LOL Well if you prepped, but not in the grass, it would have to compete with it for food :)

No seaweed local to me in Idaho. I have heard of people growing potatoes in straw, though. I hope it works out great for you!
I wonder if the salt will build up in the soil? Or do you wash it out somehow?

yes straw is another good medium. I think mother nature does all the washing I need :)
