  • Beginners guide to DSMB Deployment. When you can't get enough DSMB Deployment practice, why not practice your Scuba Diving skills at home. DSMB Deployment practice on a wall, a kitchen table, a coffee table or even the top of your stairs. DSMB Deployment doesn't need to soley be practiced underwater.
    Practice your DSMB deployment as much as you can, with little or no scuba diving kit on at first. Then start to add your mask, gloves, regulator, BCD and even a cylinder as you get more practiced! As well as your buoyancy control this is one very important skill to master. Finding novel ways to practice the skills we use in scuba diving will make for better instructors and better divers.

    ✅ In my first year of diving I’d wasted a lot of money on kit and equipment that didn't really work for me and the type of diving I wanted to do. It is my hope that these videos will help you spend your money more wisely on kit that will work well for you and your dive buddy and also be future proof for bigger, deeper and longer dives.
    ✅ In these videos I'm going to show viewers how to choose and use the right kind of Scuba Diving Kit for the type of Suba Diving they want to do. How to be more efficient and proficient with it to make them a more confident and safer Scuba Diver.
    ✅ Looking the part is often half the battle to feeling confident, if your gear is configured right then you can access it easily and you will also be more efficient at moving under water. I’ll show viewers what I have learned since I started diving and been fortunate to have some fantastic world class instruction.
    ✅ I’ll draw on the experiences with and training gained from some of the world class Scuba Diving Instructors such as Steve Kirkman (SDI/TDI), Garry Dallas (RAID), Dominic Robinson (BSAC), Ginge Crook (BSAC), Maria Harwood (BSAC), Nick and Caroline Robertson-Brown (FrogFish Photography) and Mark Paisey (BSAC).

    Really helpful. One piece of advice for future videos is that if you have "Beginners guide" in the title, make sure you are very slow at explaining all the concepts even if you assume it's already understood. For example, you kind of skipped over the part of unlatching then reattaching the double ender when you just said, "and now deploy the SMB." Some more explanations and step-by-step guidance would have been helpful. Best of luck on the videos!

    Practice is indeed key. I used to be rubbish because I always dove on guided dives in the tropics. The guides would deploy the SMB. Then one trip I just asked if it was OK to do it as well. I did about 30 deploys on that trip, got some feedback, and am now quite confident in the skill.
    They were glad I asked before doing though. Apparently having multiple SMBs in close proximity pop to the surface is a sign to the boat that there's a problem, at least in that region.

    I use my drysuit hose to inflate my DSMB. It works a treat and if I can’t get it back on my dry suit for some reason there’s no worry as I’m ascending not descending at the end of the dive. It’s much safer than using your bcd hose cause if something goes wrong & you can’t reattach your bcd hose to the bcd you have no inflation on the surface

    • @AndytheNorthernDiver
      @AndytheNorthernDiver  9 месяцев назад

      Yeah I like that, often I have a bailout or deco cylinder so use the hose off that to make it easier / safer than unattaching a hose

    • @bloodymarvelous4790
      @bloodymarvelous4790 7 месяцев назад +2

      You know you can manually inflate your BCD, right? There's a special mouthpiece on your power inflator especially for that purpose. During the ascent you only need to let air out of the BCD, so not being able to reattach the LPI hose isn't really an issue.

    Some time ago i also deployed my DSMB from around 10m ish in the red see, and not as a traning exercise, but for the boats above to see where we are. But while i was trying to prepare all, somehow the string tangled up in my second stage and while going up it ripped it out of my mouth and pulled me up towards the surface, by the time i managed to untangle it from the string i was above 5m's almost on the surface ....
    I think this is the biggest danger with dsmb deployment.
    And the only thing to do to practice is to go a pool that is at least 2meters deep, get BCD and regulator and a small bottle if possible and exercise there...

      Make sure above you is clear.

    I've never used a spool. Only a reel with a handle etc. This seems quite fiddly if wearing gloves. I like the idea of using a spool to keep bull down but I can't imagine doing all that messing around with the bolt snap with gloves on. Might give it a try though

    • @AndytheNorthernDiver

      On a wall in the garden in the sun is a perfect place to try then practice mate

    • @stevenkirkman7719
      @stevenkirkman7719 2 года назад +4

      I use dry gloves and it really is a simple process, try practising in the pool or in shallow water until you obtain the technique which suit you best. Also if required you don't have to leave the snapbolt attached to the line. you can re-attach it to your D ring and deploy the SMB, then once the SMB has reached the surface clip the snap bolt back onto the line so it can be used in conjunction with the reel for winding up on your ascent. Note, on Andy's demonstration the snapbolt is above the spool and is pushed forward allowing the diver to rotate the forward to wind on the line. You can't use the snap bolt to wind the line around the spool or it gets jammed. Also note when he reaches his Safety Stop or Deco Stop he locks one side of the snapbolt off on to the reel and the opposite end back onto the line. This ensures the diver doesn't accidentally cause the snapbolt to unclip from the spool. Good Luck at practising.

  • @pdchr
    @pdchr Год назад +1

    good video... so when you use the dsmb is when you are going to assend the water, correct? IE - you're not diving with a float over you the whole time, right?

    • @AndytheNorthernDiver
      @AndytheNorthernDiver  Год назад

      Correct yes, the D in dsmb stands for delayed, meaning the deployment is during the dive, not at the start. Usually deployed when away from a shot line as means of the surface cover or boat locating you. When it’s deployed throughout the dive it’s called an SMB, more often used when there’s surface boat traffic or on a drift dive, again so the surface cover or boat can locate you. Thanks for watching

    That is a really convoluted way of attaching a dSMB to your spool. Why not just pull the leader through the D-ring or loop on the dSMB, and pull the spool through the leader?
    Personally, I keep my dSMB and spool separate. I pull the leader of the line through one of the holes in the spool. Attach the bolt snap to the leader, wrap it behind the trigger, and clip it through the gate. Then clip your dSMB onto that same gate. They're securely clipped together.
    Then, when it's time to deploy:
    Unclip the dSMB from the boltsnap.
    Clip the spool to a D-ring.
    Unfurl the dSMB and hold it with your left hand.
    Unclip the spool, hold it with your dSMB in your left hand, and remove the bolt snap.
    Clip the bolt snap back onto the D-ring.
    Pull the leader out of the hole, and thread it through the dSMB D-ring.
    Pull the spool through the leader.
    Inflate the dSMB and let it go.
    Take the bolt snap off the D-ring, and clip it onto the line.
    Wind the line back onto the spool using the bolt snap.
    Clip the line off to the spool with the bolt snap when you reach your stop.

    1. Number 1 way to destroy your blob is overfilling it while your 25-30-40 or more meters down as the dump valve can’t dump fast enough & it expands massively in 2 seconds in the last 15m stretching the seems to leak forever.
    2. It’s almost the only way your going to be seen if you surface far from the boat…it stops you being hit by the boat too.
    3. It’s actually easier to use one than not use one..yes if you have one on the surface & your slowly reeling up to your safety stop then your being given a feel of your ascent rate.your also being given feedback if the line goes limp that there are waves or your buoyancy has changed.
    At the safety stop hang on it a tiny bit negatively buoyant if you do you’ll have a measured guide to your depth you can feel & hang there while others try to stay level with you with buoyant skills.
    (You should not be hanging heavy or relying on it but it’s going to make a safety stop super easy to do)
    Last tip.keep your computer on the wrist that is mostly readable ie I’m right handed my reel stays in my left I reel it up with my right hand so my computer is on my right wrist so it’s in my face while I’m slowly reeling In I don’t have to look for it.
    Computers screen or a wrist mirror on the wrist can also be used to see above you or behind while your hanging there if your looking for a buddy.

    Couple of questions.
    Do you leave the bolt snap on the line for the deployment of the DSMB or clip it off on a D ring for the deployment and then unclip the bolt snap and use it for winding in?
    When deploying the DSMB in the video the line came off the reel from the hand side of the reel. Is this how you normally do it or do you have no preference?

    hi again, after seeing your other video about the spool vs reel debate my dive centre in poole are adamant that for uk diving spool would only be used as a reserve for your reel ( basically saying there unsafe for a primary ), as I mentioned I cant get on with the reel and would rather try a finger spool.

    • @AndytheNorthernDiver
      @AndytheNorthernDiver  3 года назад

      Unsafe is a very BIG word to use. Many people and certainly the more forward thinking training agencies teach spools now rather than reels. Just image, you’ve lost you primary line that’s on a reel, so you revert to the secondary (less safe) spool to get you out of the sh*t, that makes no sense does it? You have the the freedom to choose what you want, so do so.
      What agency are you talking about?
      NB: this is all within the confidence the open water environment, I’m neither cave or deep wreck penetrating qualified or talking about this type of diving.

    • @AndytheNorthernDiver
      @AndytheNorthernDiver  3 года назад

      Ah well mate, that's unfortunate. I'm not one for agency bashing, so choosing an instructor because of their credentials over their price or locality is where many people differ. I have had some of the best instructors that are based in the UK, all are technical cave divers, and look at diving from that angle and prepare you to be the diver you'll want to be tomorrow. Buoyancy and trim come first, then a build-up of skills to dive as a team rather than led by a DM. Each to their own, but I want to be the best diver I can be and hold my own with the best.

    • @stevenkirkman7719
      @stevenkirkman7719 2 года назад +1

      The dive centre are talking bollocks in regard to being unsafe for Primary, I have done over a 1000 dives in the uk including Tech OC and CCR and I use a finger spool all the time. The only time I revert to reel is if the dive is beyond 40m and that is only because of the amount of line required for tech dives. I also find an ascent with a spool is far easier than it is with reel. Also consider this, if you let go of the spool during deployment it will rise a bit in the water but it will continue to unravel and eventually come back down especially if the clip is still on the line as Andy demonstrates, whereas the reel will be lost to the surface with no chance of recover until you get back on the surface. I suspect your dive centre is full of divers who don't know how to properly use a spool for deployment and scared to use them. When I deploy the SMB with spool in the UK using dry gloves I hold onto the SnapBolt and the line just runs through it and the spool just spins up against the snap bolt.
