It's okay Kathleen, you didn't hallucinate "Czech Republic". That was the English name after the split of Czechoslovakia in 1992, and still is, for the record. The Czech government wanted "Czechia" as the English short name, but it didn't take. They got the UN to officially designate the shorter name in 2016.
A few years ago I saw some video from Miss World or Miss Universe or whatever where their contestant had "Czech Republic" on her sash and it sent me searching for a while to figure out if I'd just imagined something.
Okay, it’s pronounced ‘Vinwixt’, and I just figured out why this morning.
Homunculuses in Magic (on Ravnica and Kylem and Innistrad) have one eye. That is, they are missing two eyes.
Their names are missing two ‘I’s!
‘Fblthp’ = ‘Fiblthip’
‘Zndrsplt’ = ‘Zindrsplit’
‘Vnwxt’ = ‘Vinwixt’
Ta~da!!
Don’t forget Mklthd (miklthid)!
If they have one eye and are missing two, does that mean normal homunculi have three eyes? :P
to be fair, as a Hindi speaker I always assumed they weren't going with "Kaala" as in Black, but rather "Kala", or "art", and they ran with it in a weird direction. So it was a matter of "we definitely should have hired someone who spoke the language"
Small point about the naga thing: they still use the word naga in flavor, just not mechanically. The creature type is snake, the creature it represents is still a naga.
As a Czech here - I would very kindly like to point out that Czechia is pronounced CzeKia. And also, there is Chechnya, pretty different country.
But honestly, I am very proud and pleased by the fact that we are using Czech Rep -> Czechia as analogy to Kal*desh -> Avishkar. (Despite being strongly against Czechia. :D )
Whoops. Thank you!
@@LRRMTG All good, no bad feelings. Quite the contrary. :)
Also, since I know you are rather caring bunch of people and also willing to know more: We still are called the Czech Republic (as per the official name). We just adopted the shortened name ("Czechia", derived from shortened Česko). I also feel the small need to say we are much closer to Germany and Poland than we are to Serbia. We are more of a beer nation than a booze one :)
Thanks a lot for the great work you do. You rock.
This was such a dope and fascinating discussion. I love listening to y’all hash this stuff out, learning about how different cultures affect Magic and vise versa is just music to my ears. Also, I didn’t know that we were getting a new Saheeli! She’s everything I could ask for so I’m glad I could catch that!
For those wondering the TV show that began the Rakshasa game of telephone was Kolchak the Night Stalker
@@STS-qi1qy I remember learning that iirc from Spice8Rack’s Tarkir video
“The saffron olive test” is fucking hilarious
I really appreciate Shivam's description of his perspective and his very relatable motivations for his numerous inputs on this set, especially his wisdom regarding revolt and renaming.
Imagine if they branded this set as Avishkar Rises leaning in on new trade and alliances/conflict created from the Omenpaths, evoking India's history with the Silk Road, instead of making it a hot wheels set. Reception might have been a bit different.
That’s not super reflected in the cards though. It’s part of the story, but the Wacky Races is the most obvious part of it.
@@Mordalon That's literally what they said.
@@Pidgeonsofwar They are talking about the branding, not what the actual cards were. Branding it as a focus on Avishkar political/economic alliances would require a drastically different set design.
So if they mean actually changing what the set is rather than it's branding, that would mean not making it about racing, which is the whole point and instead would make it just another Kaladesh/Avishkar set.
That's a surprise! You've invited Graham!
Related to Shivam talking about Basri, I do love that both Amonkheti Planeswalkers sparked from joy and love of their deities. Samut, if I remember, Sparked because she was recognized by Hazoret. (I also love Basri. My boi!)
Perhaps a specific feeling, but I am a well educated teacher and getting to hear Shivam talk about his culture opens me up to a new world of googling and learning I would not easily have without. It is a joy, part of me wants to memorize those tattoos.
It's always wonderful to hear from Shivam- especially when he's so just, delighted about it all.
Is he ever not? Shivam is the biggest ball of joy and positivity in Magic community
I've been desperately hoping to hear Shivam's take on the Avishkar world building, I'm glad this happened
Me too!
i could genuinely listen to shivam gushing like this forever. always brings a smile to my face, and i always learn cool stuff
I have good news about a podcast he's on
Man, I love this. More of this in the world, please
A Wild Shivam has appeared!
Istanbul was Constantinople, now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople, if you're ready for a date in Constantinople you'll be waiting in Istanbul... even old New York was once New Amsterdam. why they changed it, I can't say--people just liked it better that way!
This was very enlightening, thank you Shivam
Shivam on the intro! Woohoo!
Man. This was such a good episode. I wish it didn’t end so soon 😅 I’m like “aw it’s already over? I wanted more” lmao
17:40 What's problematic about angels on Avishkar/Kaladesh? Is it just because they're not a thing in indian culture or something else? Really curious about this.
Hindu has a category of being called Deva which are analogous of but not quite angels. It's problematic because conflating Hindu Deva with Christian Angels obscures a part of Hindu belief that isn't very well known
Reminds me of another great Shivam story on the origin of "Juggernaut". To quote Wikipedia, because I think Shivam's recounting was a series of tweets: "The meaning originates from the Hindu temple cars, which are chariots, often huge, used in processions or religious parades for Jagannath and other deities"
If you want to check out an older episode of TTC Shivam talks about this in the Kaladesh episode they had him on for iirc
That Shivam dude, I could listen to him talk about Magic for hours. He must really love Magic. He should totally have a podcast.
Also, to the point about places changing name, I spent several years in Namibia after college, doing public health work under PEPFAR-sponsored programs. This was a country that's existed fewer years than I have. It had a different name when I was born, while it was a territory of another country. Then, they had a successful independence movement, and changed the name. They changed the name of one of their regions while I was there (comparable to renaming a province in Canada), and I saw more outsiders take issue than people in the country, especially that region. Several countries have changed names in recent years, either complete changes or asking that their local name be the name used regardless of language. Yeah, it takes a few tries to get used to. Okay.
He has such a laid-back, casual attitude, maybe he could name his podcast "Casual Magic".
He and Ben Wheeler also love Magic a lot, maybe they could start a podcast called "Shivam and Wheeler Love Magic"
If he does make a podcast, I hope Benjamin Wheeler shows up
I remember that Magic hearthstone game! It was ok, I remember being impressed with the social design and also being extremely frustrated for the people who worked on it how little marketing it got.
I will never skip an episode of any magic show that has Shivam on it
Basri make Amonkhitties
Ok I love that they've made the Saffron Olive test.
When Saffron Olive goes through new cards during spoiler season, I think we get to hear how he pronounces a word for the first time, and often he transposes letters. ‘Boiler-biggles’ for ‘boilerbilges’ being a pretty funny one. He absolutely can be trained to say the name correctly, but I think he turns what seems like a minor disability into a chance for a laugh.
@@ohako79 Bugler Rat
@@ohako79I've wondered if SO's pronunciation is related to dyslexia...I feel a liiittle awkward about people teasing him for his pronunciation. I know that he sometimes talks about his mispronounciations and laughs, but I don't really like teasing in general when someone doesn't consent to it.
@@Dolphgrim Right. I feel much the same way. I wish there was a way we could let SO know that sometimes a dyslexic reading is okay being funny (Bugler Rat), but other times it can feel insulting to a native speaker (Abuleo) without coming across as demeaning.
the next time we return to Avishkar if the omenpaths are still working characters inspired by journey to the west and the mechanic prototype
Wait this is how I learn Zaire isn't a thing anymore?!?!
You have to love Shivam's energy.
I really like the change in universe i hope marketing stays out of the way and allows more changes in the future it gives the worlds history
I'm glad they didn't retcon it. It USED to be called Kaladesh and now it's not. That makes the world feel more alive.
25:28 lmfao shivam you're giving Seth too much credit
This was great! I love hearing people talk about Magic cards in ways that aren't just the rules text on the card!
Shivam does a Dragonlance podcast? Guess I'm gonna have to check that out...
WotC has been renaming planes since Dominaria, weird how there was hesitation with Avishkar
the plane of Kaladesh (now Avishkar) was and is beloved by many people. The fear of the name change was a sign of WotC mucking up something they loved for political correctness (or w/e reason people come up with in argument against change).
In the spoiler forums, there were non-zero amounts of comments about people not liking the name change and/or the set as a whole. I didn't see any reasons for why the dislike. The best I could figure out was "it's different", "I just don't like it", or "just cus."
Somebody somewhere will complain about something, regardless of what WotC does.
Hope this helps.
Each has different reasonings. If you mean how Monseng and Arkhos became Tarkir and Theros, those only appeared on Planeshift Planes, so no one was really invested in them. Similarly, the whole Dominia Prime thing was a very old retcon that didn’t really impact much. Mirrodin was meant to become New Phyrexia from the very beginning of its conception. This is not like any of those, and it’s with a plane with a major focus on cultural representation.
@@Mordalon They are directly referencing the fact that Dominaria was originally called Dominia. Check out a 4th Edition or earlier Grizzly Bears and then look at the 5th edition for the change in flavor text. So they've been renaming planes since the literal beginning of the game.
I genuinely love how enthused Shivam was to do the intro and how enthused Graham was to let him
Spellslingers was pretty fun, yes. Pay-to-win, but it was a mobile game. (And yeah, the only reason I knew it _existed_ was a RUclips strategy video.)
Also, yay! More story time with Shivam! Very cool to get his perspective on something he had such a considerable hand in.
As much as I like hearing about the Czech Republic, I really don't like the term 'Czechia'. And I am Czech. But great episode (as always) and it was great to hear Shivam's perspective on everything
i would love it if we all heard a lot more about the czech republic and the velvet divorce considering the current state of the US
@MrMeldonius I would be really interested for the reasons why you don't like the name 'Czechia'. Just as a curious fellow middle European.
I only know that in German it is better to say 'Tschechien' since 'Tschechei' has difficult history associated with it.
@@metalhat3534 To be honest, it just sounds stupid to most Czechs. And besides, nobody asked for it, just one of our politicians thought it was a good idea and that we needed it, but what is wrong with the Czech Republic?
Love this for Shivam (this set is so cool)
Why couldn't there be angels in Avishkar? I don't know anything about any of this and am just curious. Thank you
Someone else in the comments said that in India, there is a supernatural being that has similar attributes to angels but are specifically called something else, and to conflate the two would be highly inappropriate.
Shivam has such a beautiful soul, thank you my friend for a better understanding of India culture and always love and laughter in your life ❤
I'm a pretty anti-religion guy, but it does make me happy to see Shivam stoked that they respected a plane's gods for once
Heck yeah! more shivam! more TTC!
I’m never this early!!!! And on a Monday? I love this channel so much. Thank you for getting me BACK into magic
Very excited to see Shivam again
You know assuming one if the whitest people you might run into the racial connotation of the slurpee boat (the 7/11 vehicle shivan was referring to).
Like i had to sort of pause for a second to and let it sink in and now I feel kind of bad for not noticing that on its own.
Like I'm guessing it wasn't intentionally on wotc part but yeah that is a yikes
(Maro said at the time that it was on purpose)
@@LRRMTG oh wow dam that was most certainly a mistake on there part and something id of known if i even remotely payed attention to stuff maro said for more then a brief moment
I'm surprised that having the plane name changed was such a big deal, like they didn't have Mirrodin become New Phyrexia. Great that the change worked out. Here's hoping that the next time we visit Ravnica they'll want to lean more into the Eastern European flavor.
I think it was mostly a knee jerk reaction from many people with comparisons of certain things happening to old disney,... etc. stuff too. Where you can see racial, religious, cultural, etc. insensitivities when the depiction was totally normal like that in the past and people now just trying remove that stuff without context.
They didn't like it happening to their personal favorite IP and reacted like it was people saying the spanish word for the colour black is racist, just because there is a very similar sounding word with additional meaning in US english.
This was not the case here though, with the old name having a major meaning which was pretty bad compared to the intended niche meaning.
The new phyrexia/mirrodin one was purely story driven, while here you have an actual outside issue with the intended "main language". The way they did it though i like. Countires / places get renamed all the time, depending on the current state.
Just removing stuff is never the right solution, ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. Educating people is always a better way and even better if you can spin it in a good storyline.
For the record, Mirrodin was always intended to be taken over by Phyrexia from the very beginning of its conception, while the change to Avishkar wasn’t originally intended.
Shivam is a national treasure, both in this game and in other media spheres. May he be brought on for more projects!
Missed opportunity to call the episode "Shivam, get in the Avishk(c)ar!"
The most important man in content creation
RE: Avishkar, I think they dropped Kiora's last name because it was some sort of slur no Korean I think?
It was an unintentional usage of a Maori word that Wizards found disrespectful, but it was not a slur.
waitwaitwait.
Shivam, I need you to tell me what is wrong with the name "Ceodore".
well, it's supposed to be Theodore =)
@@shivambhatt8380 I always assumed they started it with a C to acknowledge his savior of a father's name.
@@shivambhatt8380 Theodore was Golbez's real name, so they don't wanna share a name, but I guess the idea was Ceodore was named after his father's brother.
@@shivambhatt8380 Thank you, Shivam. XD
I bet Shivam is one of those people that doesn’t like Apu.
As it happens i did a lengthy podcast on that very issue! I think apu is rad when they choose to make him rad, and racist when they chose to make him racist
Flanderization (over time in a series not allowed to die) is a bitch eh?
Gotta love that Shivam. He's a POWERFUL antidote to all the cynicism on the Internet.
I must say that I don't care about Magic Story any longer, I stopped reading/following them quite a while back. What matters is the cards, the rest is just something extra that is not for me.
The story is on the cards, and has been featured prominently for a long time.
@@Mordalon And I prefer to get the story from the cards themselves, not the website.
Must you say it though? Is that particular opinion worth voicing here, specifically, on a video about cultural understanding as it relates to the worldbuilding behind both these cards and their narrative?
@ They literally still have Story Spotlight cards. And Magic has never had the story primarily on the cards, so I have no idea what idealized past you're talking about. There's tons of characters during the Weatherlight era that never got cards until Commander precons in the last few years, and trying to determine the story of old blocks like Mirrodin, Time Spiral and Lorwyn/Shadowmoor from just the cards is nearly impossible.
@ You wouldn't even know the majority of the Simic guild was wiped out or that the reason Prahv and Parhelion had to be rebuilt from the cards, and that was when the story was in novels, not the website.
Give me move Avishkar. Hive me more Thunder Junction. Give me more Kaldheim. Give me more KamigawaND. Give me more of these amazing worlds I want to explore, not just single sets and endless UB.
We are getting more.
I think the name Shivam was referring to was goblins being called Moggs being equivalent to the naga/snake convo
He landed on Orggs which are half-orc/half-ogres from Dominaria. So not exactly another name for orcs (and they've kept their own subtype instead of becoming orcs) but I get what he meant.
@ ah yes I remember him saying that now thx
YES THANK YOU god i could not for the life of me remember
@@STS-qi1qy reminds me of the Orogs from old D&D; I think those was the offspring of an orc and an ogre.
19:17 Someone doesn't watch enough Spice8Rack...
Love Shivam.
They are right that the name change excellently exemplifies how you present internal consistency in your IP. I wish Wizards creative was also as consistent.
For example, the introduction of the Omenpaths had an environmental entity that faceplanted Nissa, newly desparked, but still one of the most powerful mortals in the IP and now we've laid down racetracks through them...
Also SaffronOlive out here getting drive byed.
First huh
*Kaladesh
Not any more, no.
I mean, I still won so call it what you want 😂
