Great analysis, Tom. "Another teachable moment" lol What's sad to me is not whether or not the President said what's alleged, but the fact that it is believable that he WOULD say something like that.
the thing that surprised me is that he denied using those words. At least we can agree that he isn't proud of saying it, else he wouldn't have denied saying it. He's proved to be smarter than his supporters in this issue.
"he's my senator, I can make fun of him" hahaha There's so many people trying to spin this thing for political reasons, it's refreshing hearing intelligent commentary on it. Thank you
Basically if you think Trump is racist, you’ll take his comments to be racist. If you don’t think he’s racist, you’ll think, while the comments are rude, in reality the counties, like Haiti, are not good places to live.
Haitian Music all day I have not, I can’t speak for him. One doesn’t have to travel somewhere to see if it’s a nice place to live. The Haitian people seem very nice as a whole, and I’m sure there are many great aspects of there culture that are respectable. But concerning there economy and living conditions on average, it’s not a big leap to say that it’s not the best place to live.
MR.Richey i gotta say, as a teenager, i am honestly impressed at your teaching method, usually i go to history channels ONLY to study for a test or school work but i cant help but watch your videos lol and I added you on Snapchat 😂 you explain things in a way that isn't boring like most historians.
I'm a fellow educator on RUclips. I appreciate your videos and appreciated this one as well. I like that you introduced a current event. I do however think we want to be careful with saying something like "it's all subjective". It happening or not happening is not subjective but rather objective. We then subjectively decide which evidence we find most convincing.
+Miguel Benitez Jr. Thanks for bringing your channel to my attention! Your videos are on topics that interest me. I just subscribed and will take a look at your work. We should consider tackling a project together (video or podcast) sometime. As far as subjectivity, what I meant was that we can never know what objectively happened because all of the sources are behaving in a way that is advantageous to them. I think we agree that it was either said or it was not.
Tom Richey Thanks! My channel is young and still small, but I'm going at it full force. I'd love to chat sometime about video or podcast. I think you produce great content and you're one of my go to channels when I'm thinking through particular periods of history.
Tom Richey I should also point out I think I generally agree with your point in applying it to historiography. There's a sense in which I appreciate much of what John Lukacs and others have written about this. I don't, however, subscribe to a postmodernist historiography.
Miguel Benitez Jr. It was very idiotic statement you made. Especially because you are a professor. In the universe everything is objective but it's still subjective to us until we find the truth. For instance, existence of aliens is objective but since we do not have a definitive proof it's subjective to us. Same applies in every single situation. So in this situation we do not have a definite proof so obviously it's subjective to us! I wouldn't subscribe to you, professor tom is just too polite to tell off!
This video turned out to be a lot more objective than I expected. I should never have misunderestimated you Tom. On a more serious note, I liked the video. It seems like there's a 50/50 chance of him saying it. If Trump said something that was "basically" the same as shithole, then the two Trump allies aren't wrong. That seems like the most likely option. No matter the exact wording used, I'd appreciate if the president had more respect for other countries. There's a weird similarity between this and the Logan Paul incident. A regular person showing a dead body on the internet is bad and disrespectful but because of Logan Paul's audience, both it's size and demographics, the incident was much worse. If a regular person called these nations "shithole countries", it may be disrespectful but it isn't entirely wrong. Because of Trump's audience (the entire world) and his influence it is much worse that he said this about other countries. He is being incredibly disrespectful and the leaders of other countries will remember this.
+David Herron Glad you enjoyed the video. Once I started looking into the ins and outs of this, I thought all the groundwork was there to make a video about current issues that would not alienate a significant portion of my audience. I made some Trump videos during the campaign and they did pretty well, but there was one I made during the transition that, while 75% of the reactions were positive and the video got more views than my average video gets right off, I think alienating 25% is an unacceptable number. My channel is more about teaching than courting controversy.
Great vid! Nice, balanced approach to analyzing political/historical "hearsay" - as well as a teachable moment that history, in and of itself is NOT an exact science... nor is history about, necessarily bring debates to conclusions as it is about shedding as much light as possible on all sides of the debate. We just started the new semester at my (block) school - and we'll be doing DBQ training shortly. This will be used.
+John Hasdovic I’m glad to see that there are other teachers out there who share my view of history as inquiry and not an effort to have the last word on something. Thank you for supporting my work!
My pleasure... you do phenomenal stuff! If I wasn't so busy with every little flippin' committee and as a union rep, I'd probably be doing JUST what you are. Seriously - you have saved me time, energy, stress and helped my kids out a lot. I hope you can pull down a decent little supplement from your vids... Plus, as a complete resident Califoooooornian, your accent just rocks! Kids love it, too! :D
Good evening! Thanks for fantastic video! Seeing your Robert E Lee book behind you; a friend brought it to my attention that Alabama and Mississippi celebrate Robert E Lee day today, sharing it with MLK Jr. I was wondering about your thoughts on this practice and if you have an opinion about Confederate monuments. It'd be another fantastic video for a current POV discussion.
One thing you can expect from Trump, shocking or not is what he truly feels. You decide what he actually said but realize that he is the president, he holds the highest power of office in America. And he was the voter's choice. Live with it.
Schoolteacher? We NEED more like you in our very own Haiti, being California. I have a pro-America acquaintance who managed to get himself blackballed from Los Alamitos, all the way down to San Clemente
It's also a good example on how the parties are using those biases, that statement have 3 reactions, R are "he's lying" and/or "well they are" and D are "and more proof that trump is awful". Thus both bases get their reinforcing boost.
I think he said it. Because look at the other over the top stuff he said. He's my President. I respect him deeply even though I didn't vote for him. But he doesn't act presidential which he needs to do.
I may not agree with or like Trump, but I don't like this "guilty until proven innocent" mentality. When the news first came out, I was told that he said it on live TV in front of millions, not that it was in a private meeting. People are more willing to flame someone they disagree with than tell the truth. I think Trump may have said something like shithole, but I am willing to bet that Durbin twisted and misconstrued the exact words. I appreciate this video because it is truly an unbiased take on something. I also appreciate it as an APUSH student learning about effective analysis. Keep the creamy memes comin'.
A Box of Rocks - Durbin was the one who spread this "sh*thole" comment to the media. Why would you whine if someone calls out that he's lying. since out of the other four people who were there he's the only one who claims Trump said it. Calling Trump a liar while you go around believing in the anti-Trump reports and Late Night comedians and their politics. How about you take your own advice.
Let's be honest, even before the earthquake Haiti was a disaster: Kidnapping capital of the world, poverty rivaling nearly any 3rd world country you can think of.. apart from using politically correct language, what else would you call a country like that? It's not necessarily a reflection on Haitians in general ; I know many Haitian immigrants in my local area and honestly, they're some of the most honest, hard working people I know. But if we're being honest, Trump's description of their country at present is accurate.
Why has any semblance of politeness just become political correctness? Why do I have to be rude to be anti-pc? I want my leader to represent the best of my country, and I'm astonished in how manners and politeness has become something to brigade against. Because putting thought into how and what you say is now the same as censoring? I feel absolutely betrayed by the right, when they start to lionize all the bad values I saw in the left. And that's just partly the problem. What on earth does America gain from this controversy? Diplomacy has never been about "telling it like it is", it has been about helping national interests through non-violent means. Part of that is to smarten up your language and act with tact and grace.
The problem is that the whole attention is on the word shithole, when the rest of Trump's statement is much more problematic. Calling a country shithole is very disrespectful, but not racist per se. You might just be referring to the shithole conditions instead of the people after all. BUT: Saying that the US should take more people from Norway than from shithole countries makes the statement racist without a shred of doubt, as it now implies that the people from shithole countries are inferior or 2nd class.
Tastypie why is it doubtlessly racist to prefer people from a country with less homicide and kidnapping statistics than another? He may be wrong in his assessment and I'm not saying I agree that's the way we should determine who we allow to immigrate , but I don't think it guarantees he's a racist.
+Isaac J Because it implies that because said country has a higher homicide rate, higher kidnapping rate etc., the people coming from there are also more likely to commit crimes when in fact, the 2 are completely unrelated. Vetting and good immigration policy should guarantee that. But instead of saying "no matter where you come from, if you fullfill our tests and requirements, you may enter", he says "I'd rather have you come from Norway than from Kenya". I'd at least say that if his remark wasn't racist, it was 100% discriminatory. Just as it would be discriminatory if Norway said "Why are we having all these people from shithole USA come here (because of our high homicide rate)? I'd rather have people from Singapore and Japan".
I think it was geinual on the part of President Trump. Trump said to come up with a solution so he could sign. Mr. Dicky had to open his mouth to the media therefore spoiled the deal. What if Dicky would have kept his mouth shut and they would have come up with a solution for Trump to sign?
I think you are a bit shallow in your analysis. That Durbin says what he does is not surprising. If you look at the Republicans it is only Perdue that directly denies that is was said. Cotton claims he did not hear those words, he does not deny them. Which would be the right if they weren't spoken. Even if he doesn't agree with Trump he would defend the GOP. The fourth one refuses to comment. Graham says that "Basically it is true" Which enhances Durbin's claim. So one is claiming Durbin´s claim is false. One is not actively denying it which would be easy if it was not true. One is supporting Durbin´s claim. This gives: More support Durbin´s claim that is openly against it. Also taking into account that the comment is in line with previous comments that Trump has done supports Durbin´s claim. By only looking at the senators and not the bigger picture gives your analysis a very narrow perspective
the real issue is that trump uses Haitians via the HB1 visa program, so what is he talking about "why would we want them"... HE'S the one that does want them!
I know Lindsay Graham is a rabid member of the "Never Trump" GOP so he beats around the bush instead of saying Trump never said it. But even if Trump said this it was a private meeting not a public speech and meant to offend people's sensitives. Sadly Durbin saw some thing he and his party could use to call Trump "racist" and as usual the media loves it.
I do believe that trump said something similar to that, but he didn’t use the exact word, hence the “basically accurate” and “I never heard him say that word”
I don't see the problem, with this. If their country's were so great they would simply stay were they are. I think everyone knows this. The outrage seems insincere.
Exactly. I live in my own shit hole country and I want us have nothing to do with your obese shit hole usa. We should be Russian and Chinese allies. You yanks shouldn't even be in our waters.
I’m jus trying to figure out how can u have a whole channel dedicated to history and polictics but yet u make no mention of the moors no mention of the treaty of Tripoli no mention of the really important stuff
Let's be real, at this point he's said far worse. Hell, we have him on tape saying "We need to kill their families" in reference to the families of terrorists (essentially condoning the killing of innocent, and probably victimized, civilians). I honestly don't see the controversy - this is tame in comparison to that shit.
Of course almost everyone believes he said it. The big decision is not what to believe, because given the nature and history of donald trump that came instantaneously, but whether or not to admit that he did.
Whether Trump did or didn't say it, it wouldn't surprise me if he did. While I would not use that word it clearly expresses what most people think about many countries. Who wants to emigrate to Somalia? Nigeria? South Africa? North Korea? El Salvador? Right. Nobody except a very few of those who came from there and want to go home to be with their family. Pretending that these are desirable countries is even worse than using crude language as it is a complete lie.
You must be proud of your fellow Jesuit educated family member...went to Fordham University, his son Eric Trump went to famous Georgetown University. **smile**

Could you a video on the Ottomans? Anything at all about them would be great!

Keep these current event videos going! Great resource for a younger teacher attempting to broach these topics with students.
Very objective, contemporary politics would be nice

Just another reason, among the endless other reasons, to ignore politicians if youre looking for facts.
Hey tom.. Loved the way you broke down the argument and also for keeping an open ended conversation. Fantastic and thumbs up.

Thanks for keeping me up on current events and for doing it in a concise manner.
I bought that Austria shirt from watching your video haha.
+Adziim Khaidir It’s one of my favorite shirts!
If Trump used the word it should have been used about Lindsey Graham
There's probably a grain of truth to it. But, asserted without evidence; dismissed without evidence.
Schoolteacher? We NEED more like you in our very own Haiti, being California. I have a pro-America acquaintance who managed to get himself blackballed from Los Alamitos, all the way down to San Clemente
Great video, gives the viewer something to consider with information given to us recently from the news
+Nathaniel Poole Thank you, my friend! Long time no see now that I’m headquartered at the far corner of the building.
Fair, unbiased, and factual. Well done!
Great video, its a shame more people can think things through like this on more important issues.
Is that K2S0 on your bookshelf behind you? Brilliant.
+Madison Badger My favorite droid ever!
I analyze this information as followed: Sh..hole countries is probably an understatement. IMHO
great video Tom! like the bipartisan view.
+Philip Costello Always thankful for your support on all platforms!
Tom Richey of course! BTW that Lindsey Grahm a impression belongs on snl
Kind of off topic, but I like that Austrian shirt! Where did you get it?
+Kyle Schmidt The Internet
Tom Richey thank you very much! That was very helpful! 😊
Where's the lie though?
Yes I wanna see more of these type of videos in the future.
If Trump didn’t say it, why wouldn’t he just say, “I didn’t say that.”? I believe he did say it. And so what?
This is so good ! Thank you for this!
It's also a good example on how the parties are using those biases, that statement have 3 reactions, R are "he's lying" and/or "well they are" and D are "and more proof that trump is awful". Thus both bases get their reinforcing boost.

Obama called Libya a "shit show."
Yes please do more of these current event videos
Durbin has a tendency to lie. A lot.
Graham confirmed it

the real issue is that trump uses Haitians via the HB1 visa program, so what is he talking about "why would we want them"... HE'S the one that does want them!
Be careful of the Hegelian Dialectic by Jesuit agents in government.
I want that goddamn shirt so badly...
If he didn't why not just straight up deny it (the senators), no need to entertain the thought if that wasn't truly the case
I know Lindsay Graham is a rabid member of the "Never Trump" GOP so he beats around the bush instead of saying Trump never said it. Love the T-shirt!
I don't see the problem, with this.
If their country's were so great they would simply stay were they are.
I think everyone knows this.
The outrage seems insincere.
Its politically motivated as usual. Even if Trump said it this was a private conversation not a speech.

Good stuff. I would like more - yep
will someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a meme or GIF of the "basically accurate" shot? ha
love your austria t-shirt :)

I know the US is the birthplace of soap but jeez trump ( not capital letter ) is taking it to extremes
+Rob Voncken LOL

And my dog ate my other video....
Nice shirt!!
how dare u as an educator take a political stance regardless of party. Kids should be taught how to think not what to think.
hmmmm
I’d love to see more videos like this, do you watch Ben Shapiro?
