Amalie Bruun has always paved her own path, challenging underground preconceptions of heavy metal ever since the release of her debut Myrkur EP in 2014. Her first two full-length studio albums, 2015’s M and 2017’s Mareridt, recast black metal in the most personal yet expansive of terms, their blending of Amalie’s Danish folk roots with tempestuous internal struggles breathing new life into a subgenre whose followers can be rigidly possessive. With the release of her new album, Folkesange, Amalie Bruun has set out to journey into the very heart of the Scandinavian culture that marked her childhood. Folkesange relinquishes black metal for a refined yet far-reaching evocation of traditional folk, combining songs ancient and new to sublimely resonant effect. After the nightmare-induced visions that wrought themselves throughout Mareridt, Folkesange offers an emotional sanctuary, a means to reconnect to something permanent and nature-aligned. It’s an awareness that’s become deeply bound to the album’s organic, regenerative spirit, from the opening track Ella’s heartbeat, frame-drum percussion and crystalline vocals that become the grounding for a rapt, richly textured awakening, to the gentle carousel of the closing Vinter, with its nostalgia-steeped connotations of seasonal, snowfall-bewitched awe. Storytelling, rites of passage, and the invocation of a continuity that passes through time and generation are all part of folk music’s tapestry, and Folkesange taps into all these currents in their most essential form. In part a purist’s approach to the genre, free from over-interpretation and fusion, the use of traditional instruments throughout, such as nyckelharpa, lyre, and mandola offer a deeper, more tactile connection to their source, an unbroken line of communication back to the past. But the album is no museum piece; it resonates in the here and now, aided by the spacious production of Heilung member and musical collaborator Christopher Juul. Cinematic yet intimate, Folkesange exists in a state of boundless reverie, bourne by string-led drones, cyclical, elegiac rhythms and Amalie’s frictionless voice, all carrier signals for deep-rooted, ancestral memories, and associations felt on an elemental level. It’s a binding of the otherworldly and the earthy that echoes the the subject matter of many of the tales themselves. Written by Amalie, Leaves Of Yggdrasil’s medieval cadences bind tragic love story and mythology, full of both fairytale wonder and deeply human foible. Tor i Helheim, its dreamily persistent rhythm redolent of both innocence and encroachment, is based on a poem from the Icelandic Eddas, relating a journey into the underworld of Hel where the sparse nature of the accompaniment becomes the medium that carries you along in its thrall. An immersive experience in its own right, but also belonging to a wider, pagan folk-based renaissance that has attracted a devoted following worldwide, Folkesange answers a need that has become ever more pressing in turbulent times. A zeroing in on a resonance that is both intrinsic and enduring, it’s a rediscovery of personal grounding, and an experience that reaches beyond culture to remind us of a shared, deeply rooted inheritance. A tuning fork that binds the personal and the universal, Folkesange is a reminder that the most transcendent experiences are those closest to home. (Words by Jonathan Selzer)
Lyrics: Under the shady green Leaves of Yggdrasil Three norms spinning Threads so coarse Fates of men Gods they weave The fairest maiden of the kingdom Hair of silver, snow and ice Lives in the heart of every warrior But one filled her hearts desires With the fever of love's fire The course of true love Never did run smooth How much longer can they indure Life apart, bitter youth Lost in the land of a thousand forests Far away from her true love He kissed her lips, so mellow and rosy She dreams til the sun rise up And then daylight blinds her heart The fairest maiden of the kingdom Hair of silver, snow and ice Lives in the heart of every warrior But one filled her hearts desires With the fever of love's fire
Yep, Just throwing this out there, I think the biggest problem is everyone seems to need to categorize music/art to understand it...why can't it just be Myrkur?...a blend of genres. Amalie is a wonderful artist and in turn I believe many are jealous, and need to cry for attention. To dislike something and move on is one thing, but to threaten and belittle someone...it takes a very small person indeed Amalie, love who you are, love what you do, love your fearlessness, glad you have good people surrounding you \m/ from the U.S.
This is one of the most Amazing songs of contemporary Celtic Tribes style of musics! Absolutely one of my favorites! Cheers! Hats off to you! Well done!
I get seizures and I ask my roommate to put this on repeat when they happen. They're painful and can last up to 30 minutes. Thank you so much for writing this story and music, blessed be the goddess I also like how the symbol of water is in the beginning and the symbol of fire is at the end. Elements!
If you like this then listen to Love Story by Indila. The video is beautiful. Another singer with a beautiful voice is Ofra Haza. The song "Ahava" is one of her best. Sadly she is no longer with us 😢
Myrkur is so versatile as a musician. She did the black metal thing, now she drops a song like this that is beautiful but also preserves the brood of a black metal track. Genius!
The colours and shapes are connected to angelic powers according to the Kabbalah yet this knowing was and is still here alive and well. It is to communicate with your consciousness on a different level. ❤
Odin sacrificed himself for understanding. The song is about Odin's journey. The triangle is the trinity of ascention. It is literally ascending in this video. It matches the song perfectly.
I loved this when she performed it in Istanbul almost a year ago and I've been patiently waiting to hear it again. So so so happy to hear the studio version. It may be a new folk song but it feels ancient and wise🖤
I know this is just my interpretation, but to me the lights, colors and especially the pixelation at 2:02 give futuristic, even kinda cyberpunkish feel. That combined to folk and imagery of forest gives me the biggest contrast I've ever experienced. It makes the music even more powerful. Two completely different worlds overlapping. I absolutely love this.
Cyberpunk, 80s and retrofuturism are very trendy at the moment. It makes sense for Myrkur to use such imagery since she's never had identity of her own.
I own the vinyl that this song appears on, have spun it zillions of times and have repeatedly played this song............yet my arm hairs stood on end. STILL! This music is transcendental art
Amalie just invented futuristic medieval danish music. Listened carefully several times, still discovering incredible vocal harmonies with the choir. The Danish tone is a plus to my ear. I love the black metal side of the lady, but this folk side is simply impressing. Chapeau bas, Mylady !
From Amalie Bruun to Myrkur she came along way with her style of putting folk into metal and even her early years she had this style of sound. hearing this song reminds me of her years in myrkur I do love this song and very beautiful

Absolutely stunning song! Possibly the greatest song to date by Myrkur. So emotional and beautifully written. This will be an album to look forward to.

Colors like in the movie The Void 2016 and Mandy 😊 And song beautiful. Folk face of Myrkur is on path with Heilung and Wardruna. I like it even better without black metal references.
My own personal interpretation of the video, and it's contrasting style to the music itself - the futuristic neon style of the video represents modern society in the 21st century, which is becoming increasingly globalised and lacking in cultural distinction and societal appreciation of our ancestral past and heritage. Yet Myrkur's singing and music against such a backdrop shows that no matter how "modern" and futuristic society attempts to be nowadays - almost willing to abandon everything to do with our beautiful past, ancestors and heritage - there will always be something there to remind us of who and what we are.
The triangle is anyways a common symbol in pre christian scandinavian spirituality - its found everywhere scratched, carved and in stone settings - very often in relation to burials and funerals... There is a growning consensus in academia that it (the triangle) probably have something to do with the 3 roots of yggdrasil, and that its ritual use opened a threshold and brought the users close to the spot where the 3 roots meet in abstract cosmological sense. A central place in cosmology where the worlds intersect. The invisible world of the gods, The world of the living, and the hidden world of the dead.

Lyrics:
Under the shady green
Leaves of Yggdrasil
Three norms spinning
Threads so coarse
Fates of men
Gods they weave
The fairest maiden of the kingdom
Hair of silver, snow and ice
Lives in the heart of every warrior
But one filled her hearts desires
With the fever of love's fire
The course of true love
Never did run smooth
How much longer can they indure
Life apart, bitter youth
Lost in the land of a thousand forests
Far away from her true love
He kissed her lips, so mellow and rosy
She dreams til the sun rise up
And then daylight blinds her heart
The fairest maiden of the kingdom
Hair of silver, snow and ice
Lives in the heart of every warrior
But one filled her hearts desires
With the fever of love's fire
isnt it : Fates of men and gods they weave.?
