  • Agnes is the youngest daughter of a clergyman who, through a bad investment, loses his savings and becomes very poor. Agnes is determined to help support her family and herself and finds a job as a governess to the children of the wealthy upper class. After working with two different families, the Bloomfield and the Murrays, Agnes learns that it isn't easy to control misbehaved, spoiled children for making a living. She also gradually sees how wealth and upper-class status ruin social values. After the passing away of her father, Agnes and her mother open a small school for girls and find happiness, especially after Agnes reunites with her soul mate.

It's a great novel. It's a shame it isn't as well known as the other Brontë sisters books like Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, it deserves more praise. Thank you for uploading.

Excellent book! Our English has degraded to the gutter. To read such prose; what joy!

Disappointed with American reader. She does her best but simply wrong to have transatlantic accent.

I agree, but the only one I managed to find was this version of the novel.

I think Evanna Lynch would read it perfectly, for me Evanna is the essence of Anne

Well this is better than what we usually get. There were two or three middle eastern sounding readers on last book I heard and one American who read like a fourth grader with dyslexia in a horrible monotone. This reader is okay. Much better is this than the staged character reads of same book which kill me

@@Librarian-ib1zcdon't listen to the character readings. HATFIELD SOUNDS 80 YEARS OLD AND MRS BLOOMFIELD 8! OTHERS SOUND LIKE THEY ARE TALKING FROM INSIDE A BOX
