I freakin love this mod! Well done, man. I got an absolute kick out of watching the process of you reballing that CPU. Very entertaining. Very skilled! Quite the system.
The desoldering work is really cool here. I had no idea PGA chips could be turned into BGA ones. I remember some years ago before LinusTechTips fully sold out he showed off a weird CPU from AliExpress that was a high-end Skylake i7 laptop CPU... in a desktop socket format. They had soldered it to a custom adapter that was a LGA, so it could fit into a desktop motherboard.
Great Video! Impressive that you got it to work. I do have a suggestion that you add some more lighting when recording because there were several areas in the video that it was hard to see from shadows etc from the overhead light. I find that an adjustable arm lamp works well to fill in the dark areas.
I always wished that "modern" tablets would work like the ones they used on Eureka. They used these same tablets and all the I/O was great because they could plug all their "scientific" equipment into them! Of course, modern tablets have very limited I/O. Plus they seemed to be more field-friendly. Great video.
You make very good and exciting mod videos! I have a technical question about desoldering/soldering with hot air: Can you give us a few tips on the temperatures and airflows you use to desolder or solder such CPUs?
Cool! Wild you tried to boot the 5,2 board with a core2quad CPU. Wonder what caused the panic? I mean do you think you could make a core2quad CPU work with a 5,2 board?
With the upgraded CPU, did the fan run at high speed constantly? I am curious because the TDP increases by 10w so was wondering if the increase in performance is beset by the noisy fan as I am considering doing this
I remember the first time I had seen one of these things! It was in a SciFi channel TV show called Eureka! I miss the old days of creative tech! Now everything is pretty bland. Nobody making experiment stuff like this anymore.
I would love a Modbook Air. The prices are not attractive to get either new Macbook Air or a new Modbook Pro X. So, where to get an older Axiotron Modbook?
A ModBook Air doesn't exist. If you want to get one of these older ModBooks, your only chance is to find one on eBay, or get lucky and find one elsewhere like I did. They are very rare though, and do go for quite a bit.
I still have mine but the machine fell off of my table ( with the help of my cat ) and the screen went black . But it still works . I know because I hooked it up to an external monitor . But that doesn’t help much .
I already tried that, actually, but unfortunately, the pinout is different on the quad-cores than on the dua-cores... So that means only dual-core CPUs can be soldered onto 13" MacBook logic boards.
dosdude1 Thanks a lot for your reply. So I guess a i7 6700HQ in my 13 inch MacBook Pro 2016 is never happening haha. Always wished I can have both portability and performance in the same package
I used distilled water mixed with cleaning agent for PCBs. I left the board in there for 30 minutes, with the water at 60 degrees C. Then I put it in a dehydrator for an hour to remove all the moisture.
+dosdude1 Thanks for getting into so much details! I've owned an ultrasonic cleaner for quite some time now but I've never attempted to clean boards with it. I usually do all of my cleaning by hand… Would you recommend this method to clean off leaky capacitor's fluide on old Macintoshs before attempting a recap?
Yeah dosdude lol I tried making a mac tablet with 2007 macbook a1181 with a hp tx1000 but I have no idea how I can connect the lcd to my macbook maybe u can help me. Thanks
@@dosdude1 I have an old Sony Vaio UX that could do with an update, would a CPU upgrade be possible on it? I can pay for postage and labour if you can do it.(I’m in the U.K. btw)
Sometimes, I forget you're the genius who made the macOS Patchers.
well sadly there are a few issues which make them not ideal for daily usage.

Video lighting is fine watching it on my PowerBook G4 with a somewhat dimmed display.

Yay now you can upgrade my 2,1 BlackBook to my T7600 :D

wow this is so awesome !!! Loved it
Wow melting the golds
Great !
The webcam from a macbook4.1 display won't work on a macbook5.2 unfortunately!
This man is a genius
This video is literally the best Mac mod I've ever seen
Your videos are amazing... unfortunately such a great channel with no subscribers
These videos are so interesting!
I tried something interesting with your pacher and I managed to get clover instal on your pacher and was able to install on hackintosh
Its pretty amazing what you do with these systems... what is the board preheater (or whatever it's called) that you use (seen at 14:43 )
that was a great improvement over stock , so a lot of old mac can do more with the right parts
that thing is so cool / osx will be so amazing as touch
Just Awesome !!!
Where can I get the ModBook software? Can't find it anywhere else...
@dosdude1 were can i get the axiotron touch screen asymbly with pen i want to mod my own macbook i have some ideas up my sleeve.
With the upgraded CPU, did the fan run at high speed constantly? I am curious because the TDP increases by 10w so was wondering if the increase in performance is beset by the noisy fan as I am considering doing this
The fan definitely runs more often, but it's not unbearable.
@@dosdude1 Amazing thank you for your quick response
This means you can replace the broken retina display in MacBook pro 15s?
If I was to swap out to an SSD and install a newer version of macOS would it mess up the touchscreen or any other functions?
Good job.

Did you try and check if the GPS works in Apple Maps?
The Maps app has no support for GPS at all.
Ah, ok
This made me wonder whether you can put quad core cpus in newer 13inch MacBook pros (from the 15 inch)

where did you get it dude
I would like to do something like this but it’s very risky especially not having the correct tools like myself
Hi, I own one of these and would like to install High Sierra on it, how would I go about doing that?
Try Upgrading That Modbook With Mojave Like You Did With Your Macbook Pro.
I have, and it works great.
How did you clean the board with the ultrasonic cleaner?

the pins on a PGA chip are just solder?? wild...

Damn, how'd you find one fur only 120 bucks?
How do I make one of them I have a taken apart macbook
I honestly didnt know the pins were soldered on, I have no clue how a expected them to attach tbh but, uhh weird
So macbook 5,2 does support FSB 1066? Nice.
Btw does anybody know why only the last model supported for higher OS X?
What supported MacBook models support that 8gb of ram
Is your website down?
Would u be able to mod my modbook like this?
Yeah, if you're located in the US and wanted to send it to me to upgrade, I could definitely do it for you.

Are you reballing over an optical drive?
Kyle's Tech Channel to not burn the surface he’s reballing on

Oh, ok you can fix anything :)
Will 8gb of ram work in a 5,2 white macbook? I know 6 GB will.
Yes, 8GB will work just fine.
Can you install linux if possible
Hey u should make a video on how to make a MacBook tablet how do I do that
I didn't make this tablet; it's an Axiotron ModBook.
@@dosdude1 oh lol can u probably make a video
😳👍💪🤩
But it's worth not going for upgrades with the 32 bit thing you never had...
You can't upgrade that macbook to 8GB ram but you can upgrade it to 6GB of ram
No, MCP79 on MacBook5,2 logic board supports up to 8GB. Only the original 4,1 board with Intel i965 supports only 6GB.
@@dosdude1 Oh I thought that it was 6GB max.
