Technically you're going to be in breach of most countries visa rules if you're earning from YT / book sales without being a UK resident. Whether you're there as a tourist or on a retirement visa won't matter. But in practice they're not coming after anyone for making a few thousand a year on YT.
They can. Any day now. THAT is the unstable problem with life in Thailand. You will NEVER get permanent residency like is easily obtained in South America or Mexico (where you can also legally buy a house/land in your own name).
I always assumed that they don't want you working in the Thai economy, which makes sense. They don't want you taking a job that a Thai can do. But I thought that making YT videos or writing a novel would be perfectly okay. But maybe I'm wrong.
I wouldn't call those pet projects work, but no doubt they would be cracking down on it. Would be different if you were making a heap and getting half a million views for every video. He just needs to decide if he actually wants to retire or wants to work (I don't really consider it as work). May as well keep hopping around countries but the novelty will wear off and still need a proper visa of some sorts.

I have lived in Cambodia for over 20 years and while it is true regarding visas there are a few more rules to follow than before its still pretty easy and cheap to comply and i think it will stay that way at least for our lifetime :)
Lads, its not that cheap. I am a homeowner, no debt, and it costs on average to live well, eat well, pay all the bills about $2-3k per month, its that the end of the world FFS, "Move to Thailand" what the hell for? Can't own anything, loads of paperwork for Visa's and nonsense its just too hard. 800k in a bank account with no interest does not appeal to me anyway. Then later when I am due the a couple of pensions from two different countries, applying for that and all the admin from Thailand? no way!! I cant see liaising with those gov bodies from TH going to work well at all. Bottom line lads, its just too bloody risky, risk of complete financial failure in TH is HIGH. I prefer to have my safe home base and just go for some extended stays and not just TH other countries too, TH does not deserve my commitment, because quite simply overall, they do not like foreigners at all.
0:11 You talk a lot of crap..you can get a 1 year Ret or Marriage Visa,no need to deposit 800000 bht in bank,40000 or 80000 bht monthly income will do..i live comfortable on my pension in Thailand..many people have difficulty now making ends meet on average income in Australia,UK ,US and more FACT!! Rubbish about Thais attitudes to foreigners..i have lived here for many years and me and all my friends find Thais friendly and hospitable..only if one acts like a moron will there be problems perhaps!
I watch these RUclipsrs in SE Asia mostly out of curiosity but for me, as a retiree, it makes little sense to move there. I get pensions from two countries too and a move would mean that part of one pension would be cut. It's easier just to visit during the nicest part of the year and have a home base elsewhere where the standard of living is high and medical care is almost free.
Since 1 January 2024 some tax rules have been changed. The rule previously was that monies earned in a previous year could be brought into Thailand without attracting a need to obtain a TIN and pay income tax. Now income earned this year and in future years is all taxable whether brought in within the present [earned] tax year or any other tax year. Subject to obtaining professional advice... I think these changes are probably aimed at wealthy Thais with foreign assets and in large measure arise because of the cost to Thailand of the pandemic.
Eddie good video and I agree with the 3 points you have raised. But what Country In South East Asia can you retire in and not have these problems. Can you do another video to address this.
I think it may work like the SRRV retirement visa here in the Philippines, which sounds similar. You can still work in your country of residence, but you need an employment visa. Saying that, can't you keep your RUclips residency which is probably the UK and still get paid as normal?
Sorry to say fella, but you've contradicted yourself about the retirement visa and work. You said you were working as a RUclipsr, so now you are claiming you are working in Thailand - which requires a WP.
Eddy you're lost the plot. Might be time for the retirement village. The 800,000 is your money. It's just security so Thailand know that you have money to live on. Or you can show proof of income instead. You can do the visa the hard way or the easy way. Thailand are very generous allowing us to stay there.
There is no such visa as a retirement visa! It's an extension of your original visa with retirement as the reason. I think you will find retirement usually means you have given up work.
1. If you pay tax in the UK, under the Double Taxation rule. You will pay no tax in Thailand. 2. You can live outside the UK and still be a UK Tax resident. 3. Old Age Pension, below Tax threshold. IF you check UK gov site on Double taxation Laws. Plus Thailand Tax office(it's in English). All is explained clear and concise. Hope this Helps Eddie.
@@justbatters566 It all depends wether you have lived and worked in UK.Spending 20yrs in Middle East , not paying UK Tax , you are still a Citizen , but not resident , even if you return for less than 180 days , your still not taxable
You actually do not need to have 800,000 baht in the bank if you deposit 65,000 baht a month. There are many RUclipsrs that are retired and have active channels. Work permits are for employment with companies. Many western countries have a no double taxation policy with Thailand. I’m retired in Thailand from the US for the past 4 years and have not had any issues with any of your concerns.
You get your payments in your english bank account i presume. Would that not mean you would be getting taxed in england and not thailand ? So technically your not working in thailand ?
Thai tax rules states that all income from Thailand sources (This includes all activities, business, work etc carried out in Thailand) is liable for Thailand income tax regardless of your status of stay in Thailand, Nationality or the jurisdiction the income is paid in. To date the Thai authorities have left YTer’s alone but if all those who are tax resident have to start filing tax returns then failure to declare this would be filing a false tax return & could be deemed tax evasion. If you do declare then it opens up the Q of we’re is your work permit. I have recently had a form sent to me from the UK’s version of the IRS called HMRC. They told me they are sharing tax information with other Countries & wanted to know we’re I am tax resident & what my Tax ID No. is & if I don’t have one the reason why. Also all YT Vids are time stamped. So anybody who thinks thinks they can convince the Thai Tax that having a YT channel while being based in Thailand is not a Thailand source of income or that they can hide the fact they got one then good luck with that. As for Work Permits some YTers say they have them through friends with Companies of an agent. According to Ben thought on his Integrity Legal channel his Vid titled Thailand Work Permits The Term Employer Of Record Is Meaningless & these WP’s are Null & Void.
Eddy, you had too much drink today. We all know you are struggling with that. Thailand is still a value for money, but the Thai baht is stronger nowadays it should be at least $1=50 thb to improve tourism in Thailand and to help support the Thai economy.
If what you say is correct it sounds as though Thailand is becoming Anglicised (Westernised). There is a 4th reason for avoiding retirement in Thailand: the poor rate of exchange, Thai Baht/British Pound Sterling.
So, when you finally settle in Cambodia, is there any social network there for seniors? It looks like you have been traveling alone since January. How will you make friends with people your age in Cambodia? What will life be like there for a Senior?
Eddie: Informative video - you always give out useful tips. My view is 180 or less in Thailand then the rest of the year in other great countries around SEA. Cheers, Archie
The Philippines could be an option, can stay up to 36 months on 59 day tourist visas before having to leave the country. I wouldn't worry about RUclips vlogging being considered as "work" and violating your visa, especially if one is not making videos critical of the host country. Good Luck buddy!
Mine also, and I will be retiring in a few years. The visa policies are changing and getting more expensive, and also the cost of living there. I am trying to decide my next move, and I may not go at all...just for visits.
I was married there and it just doesn't work. The jerk-around never ends from the xeno government. All my mates left (i.e., were DRIVEN out). Every one of them. We've found South America is 1,000 times better, where we have actual reciprocal property rights, can own a house, and a permanent residency visa is easy, with two years or less. Watch the Nomad Elite videos to see the comparisons. Also same big savings on the cost of living.
Doesn’t it mean you can’t work for Thai company. Money earned online, deposited in “home country” bank is taxed by your home country, but not Thailand. That’s my understanding.

Come home eddie, ànd just holiday in Thailand, as you are always vulnerable in Thailand. I used to work in a thai restaurant in Manchester, and one of the thais told me that after ww2, the American gis whò were based there, most decided to retire there. They were lazing on the beaches and buying up property, and generally seen as a nuisance, so tbey thai government expelled them from the country, and siezed their houses añd properties. Who is to say such a thing wont happen again !!
Yet over 300,000 Thais have a U.S. green with full civil and property rights in the United States, where they have bought up hundreds of thousands of homes in California (and, in doing so, helped cause a shortage of affordable housing for working American families). One-way is not fair and is immoral. It should be RECIPROCAL, bilaterally, as the only acceptable and moral principle.
Eddie good points well made-i agree- what do you do -sit and watch the waves crash in for the rest of your days- that-as I've said before -is why my (Thai) wife and i live in the uk not Thailand - living in Thailand -what would worry me most would be access to healthcare. In the UK it is still free as is my daily medication due to me being over 60.....but even so we have had a house built out there-my wife's dad lives there- and I can go anytime for 90 days -what's not to like ?
On the subject of retirement did you know that for some reason the Philippines is the only SEA country that updates any income rates linked to a state pension while elsewhere that would be frozen after 190 days and expat status
You would probably go skint Eddy if you retired in Pattaya. If you cant control the boozing, your time here is limited. I love it here but i go out once a week like back home. You wont see me bouncing around LK or walking street on a week day and ive been WS twice in 4 years since moving here. Retirement visa. Reputable agencies work with immigration. 17000 Baht a year one off charge. Immigration treat you like a VIP, no waiting and the fee includes 90 day reports. Not dodgy at all. You don't seem very clued up at all.
Exactly. For someone who's travelled a fair bit around SE asia, hes not very well clued up on any of the laws. All hes gotta do is actually speak to someone who knows and is dealing with these issues. his opinions are no better than those guys who sit in bars all day whinging about everything. Retiring overseas is probably not for him. Nowhere is perfect and can change at any time for good or bad
How long have you been there? That was not my experience, nor that of my expat friends, at all. I speak fluent Thai and none of us were sexpats. We all paid Thai taxes. It just doesn't matter in the end.
2:30 A retirement visa does *NOT* require an 800,000THB bank deposit. You can also qualify with a 65,000THB monthly income. You can get a Long Term Retirement visa which allows you to work and is a 10 year visa.

Chuffed you made this video cuz you've just made Thailand all the more appealing as a retirement destination (knowing you won't be there). Ta very much.
I agree with you about the visas. Thailand is more awkward than its neighbours and I am hoping that one day Thailand will ease up a little due to foreigners deciding other SE Asian nations are much easier to stay in. I'm on a marriage visa myself and have to leave 400k in a Thai bank account, have the police visit me at home once a year and I still have to do a 90 day address confirmation. It's a lot of messing around. A lot of people of retirement go for a retirement visa even when they are married due to amount of info necessary for a marriage visa.
Not a chance in hell that Thailand gov is going to "ease up a little." You DO know who runs Thailand by now, right? The ethnic Chinese (Teow-chu) minority families, who inter-marry and are extremely xeno and ultra-racist. You are not wanted or welcomed. Only your money is. Every single one of my closest expat friends -- about a dozen from many Western countries -- was driven out, in the end.
180 days in any country you should be a tax resident there, plus in the UK my state pension is taken into account as well as any other income tax wise, same same

Very unfortunate direction of travel in Thailand. Recent incidences with Farangs and the law is another reason to consider. Vietnam has 3 month visas now and multi-year if you get married to a local but then the divorce rate is over 70%. Philippines and Malaysia (Borneo in particular) are looking very attractive (and cheaper) right now and have the SRRV and S-MM2H visas respectively.
Eddie you are so wrong. I've lived in Thailand for over 10 years. You said the reason is not cost...then go on about cost for 10mins. where is your youtube channel registered?
Thailand's tax law changes simply bring it into line with majority of other countries including UK, Europe and US. Can't really get angry about that. As for RUclips, most creators get to your size they usually set up a company. Then you'll only pay tax on dividends withdrawn from the company which are in many countries liable to a lower tax rate.

Technically you're going to be in breach of most countries visa rules if you're earning from YT / book sales without being a UK resident. Whether you're there as a tourist or on a retirement visa won't matter. But in practice they're not coming after anyone for making a few thousand a year on YT.
..or are they??
They can. Any day now. THAT is the unstable problem with life in Thailand. You will NEVER get permanent residency like is easily obtained in South America or Mexico (where you can also legally buy a house/land in your own name).
@@harveythompson1756 yes they are, I have been reporting these clowns to Thai immigration for the last 6 months
I always assumed that they don't want you working in the Thai economy, which makes sense. They don't want you taking a job that a Thai can do. But I thought that making YT videos or writing a novel would be perfectly okay. But maybe I'm wrong.
you are probably right in any case they cannot enforce it
there are nomad visas
You’re spot on…Eddie is getting his knickers in a twist 😁
I was going to say the same thing, I think Eddy will be alright doing what he’s doing.
Eddie not supposed to be working on a tourist visa either
Not true as far as digital working goes, your comment is irrelevant
@@kippsguitar6539 100% true digital nomads are required to obtain a work permit in Thailand if operating within the countries borders, this includes you tubers especially if they are monetized, you cant even volunteer (unpaid) or become a monk without the correct visa here. Visa: Income and savings, in total 800 k TBH! So not a must to have 800 k TBH on the bank account!
ur clueless
I have lived in Cambodia for over 20 years and while it is true regarding visas there are a few more rules to follow than before its still pretty easy and cheap to comply and i think it will stay that way at least for our lifetime :)
Hi Bryan where do you live, may I ask what you did for work
Lads, its not that cheap.
Thanks for your info
Typical Thai's, shooting themselves in the foot. I wouldn't give the greedy, knowing assholes, a single baht.
knowing = kerniving
Eventually, yes.
You need to check the rules regarding work and tax for Cambodia as well, probably will be quite similar.
It's far easier
It's not similar at all
Sounds like you’re getting old when you start ranting in public.
😂😂😂
I think it may work like the SRRV retirement visa here in the Philippines, which sounds similar. You can still work in your country of residence, but you need an employment visa. Saying that, can't you keep your RUclips residency which is probably the UK and still get paid as normal?
Don't do encourage him to go to the Philippines. Think of the people and other expats. He should only go back to the UK if they will take him.
Eddy. Thailand don't do retirement visas. They do 12 month extension of stay renewable each year.
Sorry to say fella, but you've contradicted yourself about the retirement visa and work. You said you were working as a RUclipsr, so now you are claiming you are working in Thailand - which requires a WP.
Steady Eddy, on form and on point, as always. Thanks for this.
Much appreciated
Eddy you're lost the plot.
Might be time for the retirement village.
The 800,000 is your money.
It's just security so Thailand know that you have money to live on.
Or you can show proof of income instead.
You can do the visa the hard way or the easy way.
Thailand are very generous allowing us to stay there.
There is no such visa as a retirement visa! It's an extension of your original visa with retirement as the reason. I think you will find retirement usually means you have given up work.
Stop this. You are showing the uk up. Say something good or shut up. Div
Point 2, Is incorrect, you need to spend greater than 180 days consecutive to be resident
@@paultaylor2611no your wrong that’s not how it works
Yeah that's what I would think too.
@@SEAsianDream don't tell them what your doing, use a family address for banking stuff.
Yes you can
Eddy, you had too much drink today.
Plenty of people retire in Cambodia
Many nice people too.
He shouldn't go to Cambodia.
All good Eddy, do what makes you happy. Safe travels. Cheers mate 🤙
With your recent health issues the outcome is even more iffy. Good Luck.
Pro tip: whatever eddy does do the opposite and you'll have the best time ever
Eddie: Informative video - you always give out useful tips. My view is 180 or less in Thailand then the rest of the year in other great countries around SEA. Cheers, Archie
Sounds the best way, Archie
You're not wrong Edd they are driving people/ retires away from Thailand 😢
The Philippines could be an option, can stay up to 36 months on 59 day tourist visas before having to leave the country. I wouldn't worry about RUclips vlogging being considered as "work" and violating your visa, especially if one is not making videos critical of the host country. Good Luck buddy!
What an excellent and straight honest video Eddie.Marvellous😂❤
Thanks, mate
My wife is Thai but Thailand's visa policies annoy me so much that i am also having doubts whether i want to live there.
@@davidb2206thanks for telling us all your mates are broke pmsl

Rent a condo and do your own cooking it makes a nice change even it's just a couple of boiled eggs and soldiers for breakfast.

You have no idea what your talking about, have another beer

On the subject of retirement did you know that for some reason the Philippines is the only SEA country that updates any income rates linked to a state pension while elsewhere that would be frozen after 190 days and expat status
I have heard that
You would probably go skint Eddy if you retired in Pattaya. If you cant control the boozing, your time here is limited. I love it here but i go out once a week like back home. You wont see me bouncing around LK or walking street on a week day and ive been WS twice in 4 years since moving here. This country has all the infrastructure you need to retire here and is a great place to live if you have a decent pension or money in the bank. If your skint it can be the loneliest country in the world.

Retirement visa. Reputable agencies work with immigration. 17000 Baht a year one off charge. Immigration treat you like a VIP, no waiting and the fee includes 90 day reports. Not dodgy at all. You don't seem very clued up at all.
Exactly
Looking to do things on the cheap I think. Not knowing the rules is a school boy error.
That is with all actual money. Half is 45000. Any you might suggest ?
How long have you been there? That was not my experience, nor that of my expat friends, at all. I speak fluent Thai and none of us were sexpats. We all paid Thai taxes. It just doesn't matter in the end.
2:30 A retirement visa does *NOT* require an 800,000THB bank deposit. You can also qualify with a 65,000THB monthly income.
You can get a Long Term Retirement visa which allows you to work and is a 10 year visa.
Cheers, Eddy! You do make me smile, mate!
The Arthur Daley way sounds great. Eddie I'm betting that you always paid for a TV license when you lived in the UK.
Hi Eddy, I think wherever you get retirement visa it's not to work mate
There's still alot of good places in Thailand, but those places don't include the tourist traps of Phuket, Pattaya, or Bangkok.
You need 800k Baht or 65K Baht for one months.Or can make mix. When not happen, than better you not coming to Thailand. Poor people happen here to much.
u dont need either
He now has major Health problems have told him for years get regular Checkups never listened and now is paying the price sorry to say,im a Paramedic and i get all the checks done all the time have Private Insurance would not be without it and i get all the Tests done each year so if you want to take a chance not worry about your health then in the end you yourself pay the price.
What’s this guy rattling on about
Chuffed you made this video cuz you've just made Thailand all the more appealing as a retirement destination (knowing you won't be there).
If I paid my money I would not expect to still have to report and get visits and all that stuff
No chance they are milking it. And who can blame them. The uk is spending 9 million pounds a day on illegal immigration. Thais have got it correct.
@@STEADY599surely you know all this Eddy?
@@grahammurray7426 I certainly wouldn't have moved to Thailand if it was full of the types of people the UK is currently letting in.
180 days in any country you should be a tax resident there, plus in the UK my state pension is taken into account as well as any other income tax wise, same same
eddie you got a point there i totaly agree with you
I have used a retirement visa company in Soi post office for years and get the multiple re entry stamp ,have my own condo in View Talay absolutely no problems ,you said you were going to retire in Thailand so you have changed your mind ,you are making massive mistake, maybe better go back UK.you are waffling on as you said.
Latin America. RECIPROCAL property rights and even cheaper cost of living than Thailand. Plenty of beaches. Buenos Aires is safer than USA.
Eddie you are so wrong. I've lived in Thailand for over 10 years. You said the reason is not cost...then go on about cost for 10mins.
where is your youtube channel registered?
you need to learn to stop shout-talking. It's a head fek.

Indeed, and I think what really ticked him off about Thailand was that massage in Udon Thani when the masseuse only let him shoot his load once....that was an amazing rant. Quite frankly retirement in Thailand is straightforward, there are many oldies on retirement visas that are also RUclipsrs.
