Judging by how poorly it fared this Spring, with all the spillways wide open & STILL massive flooding damage downstream not just to a few puny villages or marginal farmland but also to several large cities, you probably won't have to wait for new details to be added to these "clickbait" videos (& yes, the title of this one was sufficiently sensationalist to cross over from relevant to CLICKBAIT 😱😱😱🤧). The next time you read about the 3 Gorges Dam it will likely be in the past tense, as its Tofu-Dregs construction falls apart as badly & as surely as the daily lies of the Chinese Corruption Party that runs this 💩🕳️ country...👹🤥👹🤡👹🤥👹🤦

The biggest problem that the builders did was not allowing proper curing of the concrete in the main dam construction. The best dam ever built in the world was the Hoover Dam in Nevada. finished in 1937 the cure rate is approx 100 years. so the concrete is still curing. but the biggest difference is that the Hoover Dam is 700 feet thick at the bottom and the dam has a curved side using the water pressure on the curved sides to actually strengthen the dam; on the 3 Gorges Dam in China there is no curved strength on its side but in its height. It has a 300-foot base curved upward to keep the dam water pressure from pushing the dam forward. the curve goes all the way to the top of the dam. However, remember that the concrete has not been cured yet in the dam and it could be the reason the dam is no longer in a straight line. which means it's moving a little bit every year that the curing process is not happening. it is a matter of time before this dam will eventually fail. probably in less than 50 years.

It would seem as if this was only a daydreaming architects design, an impossible one and totally impractical, given to an engineer who scratched head and complained such a thing would be extremely dangerous, suggesting an arch like Hoover could help (because structurally speaking, they do help as you stated), only to be sent to re-education classes for not saying "Yes it can be done." and replaced by a new engineer who says "Sure it can be done, and we'll finish it a year before you need it completed" and that's where we are today with this 3 gorges dam. It is visually impressive, but whoa is it even more impressive to see it FULL with more water on the way with nowhere for it go to. Unreal. That thing is destined to fail. I'd say next 10yrs.

    • @Kingcobra6699

Well, I assume we are all no experts on Dam architecture, so I take it with a grain of salt.
I have seen this video about the Dam. It seemed pretty objective, mentioning both it's advantages and disadvantages. Afaik, the design is sound. Here I would rather believe a Chinese engineer than a random commentator and simply assume the design is okay.
What is definitely not okay and this is due to the typical hubris of the CCP, is that they have built the Dam in record time. The video compared it to the Hoover Dam and mentioned the concrete should need even more time to cure. But, according to the video, the CCP wanted the 3 Gorges Dam built in socialist paradise record time. And they did it, probably improvising somehow to compensate for the missing time but that can only do that much.
So, unfortunately, this Dam will collapse before the climate will. That's very unsettling, somehow.
In July 2024 they already had to open up 11 doors or gates or whatever that thing can open - 11 were opened. Which caused horrible floodings down the stream as there was already to much rain.

In other news the wright of the water was not factored in, the ground behind the dam is compacting causing fractures and silt build up, which is heavier than water is excepting a higher psi against the dam that also was never planned for. These would have tripled the cost of the dam. The USA had experience early on with Dams, the Corp of Engineers is responsible for all US dams, which is good, but in the USA PEOPLE CAN SUE THE GOVERNMENT and companies that build them, Consulting Engineers must give approval for location and type of construction. No one is held accountable in Countries like China, the people are screwed.

The dam itself isn't in danger of collapse, however one of the key reasons for building it - namely the supposed better control of water above and below the dam - has been undone less than two decades after its completion. If these floods become the norm then they may have to rethink the utilisation. A greater all round release of water, particularly in the drier months will be needed. It is clear that the danger of needing massive releases comes from the reservoir being too high all year round. They need to sacrifice some potential for generating capacity to keep the water level lower, so that in the wet season there is no need for panic measures such as 9-11 release gates being opened.

What you saw in those satellite images are undoubtedly alignment errors where multiple satellite exposures - quite possibly taken at different angles compared to the ground as the satellite travels in its orbit while the earth spins beneath it - are stitched together to form a larger image, and the sub-images don't quite match up as they meet.

They are not idiotic enough not to know what causes tofu projects and to know how to avoid that happening in those cases that it really matters to them. They would have feared becoming the laughing stock of the world if things would have indeed been allowed to turn sour with their 'number one, largest in the world' mega-dam. Btw, when they started the project half the engineers and experts involved were from the west instead of Chinese, but they sacked them and continued on their own after a while. This may of course have been caused by corruption as usually is the case there when corners are cut with public projects, but I personally think it more likely that in this case that was not what happened and that instead they were confident they knew enough to be able to run (the rest of) the project on their own, which in their eyes would heighten the status of the level of accomplishment.

It’s built over two earthquake fault lines and when the reservoir rises above 150 meters, the gravity dam increases earthquakes by a factor of 8. That’s why it has to open the flood gates. Too much weight and stress on the structure and foundation. The velocity and weight of water rushing through the floodgates must cause vibrations throughout the structure. Canadian civil engineers were hired by China to design the dam. The Canadians wrote that the dam’s design could only handle a reservoir of water 150 meters high. China’s arrogance built it to 180 meters because it wanted to jack up its electricity output. 150 meters of water height in the reservoir has been repeatedly exceeded because of heavy rains and upstream floods. The Canadians balked at a reservoir 180 meters high 6:53because the structure might not be able to withstand the loads. The Canadians were excluded from monitoring best construction practices specified in their design, so there is concern corners were cut in its construction. Even when it was built there were warnings from Chinese civil engineers and hydrologists. Politics prevailed. It was needed for political reasons.

One unpredictable factor is climate change. As rainfall increases, the stress on the dam increases, and over time it will only get worse. It's hard to predict accurately. Remember the dam is only a few years old and there is already noticeable problems. Unless they can build some mitigation projects to relieve the stress on the dam it may be inevitable that the dam fails.

If the dam was a wise project or not is something that probably should be discussed in the distant future unless something drastic happens before then. A common assumption about large seemingly static projects like dams is that they are well, static. They are not. Dams are moving, bending. Even their concrete hasn't finally cured. That's a process which will go on for a very loong time. One could say the whole thing is alive. As the dam is moving, gaps are created and need to be sealed. That's normal ongoing maintenance for such a project. There are good things about the dam. There bad things. And there are plenty of bogus arguments.
