- ghoomar dance on mahri balak banadi song.this is a popular marwadi/Rajasthani song on which I have given some new ghumar steps.
Ghoomar is a traditional folk dance of Rajasthan. It was Bhil tribe who performed it to worship Goddess Sarasvati which was later embraced by other Rajasthani communities. The dance is chiefly performed by veiled women who wear flowing dresses called ghaghara. It has been ranked 4th in the list of "Top 10 local dances around the world" in 2013. The dance typically involves performers pirouetting while moving in and out of a wide circle. The word ghoomna describes the twirling movement of the dancers and is the basis of the word ghoomar.
Ghoomar is one of the traditional folk dances of Rajasthan, India, known for its high level of difficulty and in a competition of local dances around the world in 2013, had been ranked fourth.
Mainly performed by women, in veils and flowing dresses called the ghagra, all performers pirouette while they are in the motion of describing a wide circle together. With two motions involved it requires tremendous skill to maintain uniform distance throughout as well as look elegant in a group. Derived from the word ‘ghoomna’, meaning a twirl or going round, ghoomar takes a special place for the people of the state and is mentioned with pride by Rajasthanis. Apart from the skill and precision, it also requires stamina since it could go on for hours. No wonder it is a special attraction meant for exclusive occasions such as a grand wedding, a prominent festival, a social function etc.
