I ran Alien RPG for the first time this year at a convention. My biggest help I think (since I ran a homebrew scenario) was running it before with friends. Obviously playing the game for any reason is win- win. But I also got an idea of pacing, feedback on story elements, even critique on the map. It went so well at the Con, they specifically requested I run more next year.
That was a really interesting video; the suggestions you make are really good tips. I particularly like the idea about the streamlining of the character generation. That could be useful in any beginner environment, not just for convention games. Keep 'em coming! Your videos are awesome :)
Thank you so much for this video! While I've been DMing for a few years now, I'm going to be running convention games for the first time in a week or so... I'm so nervous but also so exicted, and these tips are so helpful!
Great video, especially as I'm preparing for PAX in next weekend! I think another good tip is to have a quick "session zero" where you establish ground rules--I.e., people introduce themselves and you say "no PVP, no creepy stuff" etc.
Hey everyone, Justin here! I was teaching myself color correction and I realize we look a little.... pink. This is resolved so we won't like this again! Also, the sound buzz at the end of the video shouldn't happen anymore. Thank you!
#5 "Nothing exciting ever happens in the Inn." Ahem, what?... in my last campaign with a completely new party, I had them start in the inn, "Oh, great! We're starting in the inn AGAIN," said the Bard. But I watched the clock and after exactly eight minutes of them talking to NPCs, I abruptly screamed in a horrifying manner and reenacted a peasant stumbling into the inn while grabbing his chest and coughing blood. The party attempted to do Medicine checks to figure out what was happening and help him, but before they could figure it out, an entrail-covered Tree Blight erupted out of his chest cavity, covering the party in blood. It then let out an ear-piercing screech and attacked them... Needless to say, no one at my table ever looks at inns the same way!
Dude, you invalidated your argument with your own post. You said they spent eight minutes just talking to NPC’s before you had to do the writing trick, “a man with a gun walks into the room” (this is a well-known writing trick google it). You might not have had to have introduced the “man with the gun” if you had started them somewhere else. Also, you said your game was a campaign. These guys are talking about running time boxed games at a convention. I’ll give it to you for creativity though.
Damn i was gonna just show up and go hurr durr ill run a game but i didn’t prepare at all. So never mind! Maybe another time!
These are great tips and #2 is such a no brainer I don't know why I've never done that?
Good tips
I hope conventions come back around here soon
Thanks for sharing

Thanks guys, these are all great tips for when you find you game session dragging as well.

That is a very good idea. Stay tuned for next week because we may address some of that! Thank you so much for watching!

@@Candyapplebone I didn't even bother reading your post to a 12+ month old comment. But good Necro.
