- Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter were introduced shortly after the release of Pokémon X and Y to allow for transfer from previous generations into the then-current generation of games, but it was also a storage app like Pokémon Box, My Pokémon Ranch, and other similar software. Let's talk about it.

Before someone rushes to the comments: Bank isn't shutting down in April! But with the 3DS and WiiU online closing for everything else in April, it does raise a big question on Bank's and Transporter's futures, which is why I wanted to talk about this in a video.
I hope enjoy the thoughts I had to share! I'm sure I'm not alone in reflecting on this. I apologize if the audio quality is a bit off on this one, there was a lot of background noise I tried to filter out but it left some audio artifacts. And this was the *second* recording, I had a first recording that was worse. ^^;

The reason why you can't transfer pokemon back when you put them in gen 7 is because the IDs got longer in gen 7 so they wouldn't be the same if you could transfer them back to gen 6.

basically, gen 7 IDs are able to be 6 characters long because now your secret id is only 4 characters long.
that being said, ID numbers couldnt go past 65535 (because integer limits), but that limit WAS lifted in gen 7.
they didnt get longer-- they got bigger. and also readjusted.
while this WOULD mean roughly 1/3rd of all pokemon would have an invalid id if you shifted the last number in your normal id into the first slot of the secret id, they could have just patched that with a software update to the gen 6 games. but they didnt, so oh well.

I found it strange that Pokémon Transporter wasn’t compatible with Gen 4 directly since they were DS games like Gen 5. It would definitely save people money from buying the Gen 5 games secondhand, especially Black and White 2.

That’s likely due to the fact that when 4 and 5 were first made bank was not a thing. And there was already a way to transfer in game to Grn 4 to Gen 5 so why bother putting it in Bank when it could already be done? Especially when not doing so also means more older games get shifted

If anyone wants an alternative to Pokemon Bank to put stuff like their living dexes into, PKSM has the ability to do just that, and also lets you move Pokemon from gens 4-7 to any game they can be transferred to, and back. I highly recommend installing it if you have a system with Custom Firmware, as if/when Bank shutdown it'll be the only way to move Pokemon from the VC releases of gens 1-2, to the entirety of gens 4-7.
That is basically the same as PKHeX (save editor for the Pokemon games). Only problem is it's likely still impossible to transfer them to Pokemon Home.
@@Mrperson0 it has PKHex and save file editing abilities but you can just use it to store Pokemon if you want to. But yeah lame that eventually there'll be a permanent cut between 3Ds and Switch eras. Maybe it'll be possible to transfer with CFW, but depending on how the HOME tracker works it might be flagged as illegitimate meaning It'd be stuck unless you move it with CFW shenanigans anytime you want to move said Pokemon
@@Mimiyan_or_Pikapikafan Looking through it, apparently the Home Tracker issue isn't an issue if you deposit the Pokemon from Sword/Shield. For example, you use PKHeX to move an Incineroar from Gen 7 to Sword/Shield, it seems that you will be able to deposit it into Home. It's just depositing from Scarlet/Violet that has the Home tracker block apparently.
Of course, this is not guaranteed to always work since TPCi can always update Pokemon Home to block that off. Same for people who imported illegitimate shiny Mews from Gen 1 or illegitimate English Faraway Island Mews from Gen 3.
@@Mrperson0 and if a Pokemon isn't in Pokemon Sword and Shield, if transferring was currently unavailable, even with CFW Pokemon like the gen 2, 5, and 6 starters would be locked to either being caught in SV or 3Ds and below if you of course are using PKSM. And if we do get gen 5 remakes, that'll mean that any starters from the original gen 5 can't do what was started in ORAS and continued in BDSP: get a little certificate proving your dedication to this franchise that exploits you a lot.
@@Mrperson0gen 1 and gen 3 mews are considered legit since no third party programs are used in getting them, just flawed in game code.
This year I've started frantically working on my ribbon master, hoping that Bank stays up just long enough for me to do it with original hardware.

Mod your 3DS and get PKSM, it’s wayyy better than Pokemon Bank. It’s easier to transfer Pokemon from Gen 5 to Gen 6/7 and you can edit your save file/mons.

Something I want to mention is that any Pokemon you put in to Bank will have their dex entries and Pokemon themselves registered to Home even if you didn't put said Pokemon in to Home. I had a Victini transferred from Gen 5 to Gen 6 and when I went in to the national dex on Home, Victini's dex entry was there even though I left my Victini in XY. So this means our Bank's National Dex are connected with Home's National Dex.
I really wish they'd just make this an off-line application That could connect locally to the switch.
I'm not sure the work that would be needed to convert an online server to an offline application and if the 3DS and Switch can even connect via local wireless, but if it's possible, I think that would be a nice solution
@AzureFlute yeah I believe one of the monster hunter games on the switch let's you connect to the 3ds games locally!

@AzureFlute If nintendo ever makes another console that stores save data on a cartridge instead of the system memory I really hope the make something like pokemon box instead of their horrible online service which forces you to keep paying and if you don't they delete your pokemon... and since not all of the pokemon are supported in a single game, if you were to transfer a bunch of pokemon from the 3ds and don't have all of the switch titles then you're forced to keep paying... I'd suggest acoustic harmonias video on the topic!
Edit: The video is called how pokemon lost its magic, the. story of pokemon on the switch. It's a really great video, and he really goes in depth with how bad the service actually is! I'd say I'd you have a spare 40 minutes. It's definitely worth the watch!
It can't connect locally to a Switch but there's a sort-of local Pokemon Bank that you can install if you're willing to mod your 3DS: PKSM. It can do two-way cross gen transfers from Generations 1 to 7 and it has near unlimited box space for living dex projects. (You can also backup your local PKSM bank to an external file if you want that guarantee that your progress won't disappear.)
Honestly for a lot of us the 4 or so months we didn’t have Pokemon Bank during X and Y was so much more fun than when it finallly came out. Hacking was basically nonexistent at that point and pretty much everything you got from wondertrade was legit. Breeding projects felt worthwhile.
2 things I’m hoping
1- We will at least have until the end of the year to use bank I think that should be just enough time to complete everything I want (doubt it though)
2- I do think there will be a solution, not one as optimized as a full Gen to Gen transfer, but they know their most loyal fans, like you and me who have multiple systems and games to trade amongst ourselves, are the ones who have memories of these games and our teams and experiences over time. I hope they know how much our living dex and teams mean to us and respect the time we dedicated to this series and it’s a new solution. Hoping Pokémon day might address this so we know how much longer we have

I never got the chance to use Pokémon Bank and poketransporter. I currently have a shiny metapod in my copy of Heart Gold which I'd like to move to the newer generations, however poketransporter doesn't seem to work. Maybe I need an SD for my DSi.
The idea these 2 softwares are going to shut down saddens me, even if I did not use them, but also makes me think of all the other things such as limited time events, that I missed because I didn't even know they existed.
You need to move it to gen 5 before you can move it to pokemon transporter! The software is only compatible with Black/White/BW2. Also isnt pokemon transporter only in 3ds? Are you trying to use it on a dsi?
The only thing preventing me moving the pokemon to pokemon home yet is because no new game has mega evolution
Maybe one day.... I can't imagine when they eventually revisit Kalos they wouldn't also include Mega Evolution

I'm rushing through Ultra Moon to start hunting wormhole legendaries. The days remaining on Bank says something like "?21" and I'm WORRIED lol. It's going to be insanely frustrating for those times I get big time into playing pokemon again and losing the ability to move them forward. At this point I've lost all hope for them to do anything good.
thats cus they set the day for everyones free trials to an absurdly high number. the game only puts 3 digits there, cus by the time youre at 1000 days theres 2 1/2 years worth of time at least-- and they were never gonna give out free trials that long under normal circumstances. the game looks for a single digit that represents a number greater than 9, cant, and bails to show a ? instead of crashing.
if it DID crash, we'd probably just get a software update that moved bank offline. but it didnt, so game freak went with the path of least resistance
My biggest hope is on Pokemon Day in a couple weeks, TPCi reveals a new device that will replace Pokemon Home. Ideally, it would accept DS and 3DS cartridges, and it would be able to connect to the wifi on its own to effectively replace Pokemon Bank.
My second biggest hope is TPCi just keeps running Bank/Transporter for as long as they can. If Nintendo can keep the Wii Shop up all these years (for redownloads), I hope they would be able to do the same for Bank/Transporter.
Unfortunately, I'm expecting them to announce an EoS for Pokemon Bank/Transporter, maybe sometime next year. Maybe they add the GB and GBA games to NSO, but we are still missing Gen 4 through 7 games. Overall, not looking forward to the end of these two apps if that ever comes since that is going to cause a huge cutoff of old Pokemon.

I'm pretty sure any Celebi could pass through, that's how I got one into my Living Dex for Gen 6. It's just that any *shiny* Celebi couldn't pass through because there was no way to get one in Gen 3-7.
I know this will sound absolutely crazy, but what if they just did it like in the old days? If Nintendo is really concerned about multiple Switches (They shouldn't, most of us have 2, since buying a Switch Lite and another copy is cheaper in the long run than subscribing yearly) then they can release another Pokemon Ranch type "game". The ONLY reason TPC is doing this cloud crap is because they want to milk Pokemon. I'd gladly pay a one time price of 60 bucks for another Ranch, because I know there's no chance my Pokemon will get lost/stolen/corrupted, I'll have the ability to use it whenever I want, and most importantly, I'll actually OWN the thing I'm paying for.
The end of Bank might just be the end of my fandom. I am working on a RetroDex in BW2 and i am content if i cant transfer them up cause the pokemon arent viable past gen 5 anyway. More people ok the PokeClassic Network would bd great just leave the modern games behind.
These last 2 videos have such interesting insights on cool mechanics and importance of preservation well done! Would love to see more content on this topic and physical cartridge Gen's like batteries or playing them today etc
It really sucks cause i just got back into pokemon, and all the mons i fell in love with in highschool wont be able to be used specifically because of nintendo is very greedy and refuse to offer a solution. I never had pokemon Bank, so yeah, it sucks.
Especially when we can connect our DS to our switch so why not try to do something with that
I really hope that they do some sort of solution, I've read from other commenters there's ways to connect wirelessly for games like Monster Hunter between 3DS and Switch, so there's no reason they can't do the same for Pokémon to keep transfer compatibility up

Realistically if there is a Homebrew version of Poke Transporter made it will probably work 10x better than the actual official poke transporter app amd have features like picking individual Pokémon or sending more than a single box

You can just get the celebi from the gs ball event after beating crystal on the virtual console and then use the coin case glitch to make it shiny
Glad you helped clear up that Poke Transporter & Bank will still be around for a little bit. I have most of the older games but there are so many and how busy life is, it's just impossible to get enough time to get all the mons transferred in time (It's a full time job!). I managed to buy Crystal on VC before it shutdown last year but I also wanted a copy of Silver too. I couldn't get around to it in time. I have a feeling come Pokemon Day next week they will announce the OG titles for the Online Shop for the Switch. But what about if you already bought it in VC? Will you have to purchase the same copies again? Also I always wondered if you sent Pokemon that evolved by trading through Bank will that make them evolve once they reach the newer games?
In some of the older games I have shiny Entei, Raikou & Suicune from an event. I also managed to finally get Celebi from the Virtual Console Crystal Version. I want to get them moved to Home eventually but I still have much to do in the newer Gen games too. I can't remember what game the shiny beasts were even in. I also have Ruby & Sapphire the original GBA cartridges but I don't have a way to play them. I'm trying to find DS consoles that are not programmed in Japanese.
Also the internal batteries for both games are dried out. I wonder if Nintendo will still fix this issue? It's just soooo much to keep track of and it gets more and more perplexing as each generation passes. I still haven't even gotten around to play Legends Arceus yet. Got the game sitting on my shelf still freshly wrapped in plastic as if I bought if yesterday and it's been over a year since purchase. All the consoles and services you need to complete all these things add up and is costly in the age of modern day inflation.
Pokémon don't evolve when sent through Bank, no. As for the battles drying up, they don't fix that issue but as long as you can open the cartridge, just need the right tool, replacing a battery isn't too tough. There are some great instruction videos on it!
If they do end up disconnecting the pokebank service, we all better email spam the hell outta gamefreak or Nintendo politely to keep it on. I know it’s a long shot but it’s better than nothing. I haven’t ad time to do my ribbon quest on Pokémon
Weird I did transfer my diamond Spear Pillar Arceus all the way to Scarlet, it says join me from the sinnoh region and is in a master ball.
I don't see why as long as some Pokemon online service exists that all older versions of that service can't continue to run. No matter what, they have to pay to keep servers on
Regarding checks for legal transfers:
You can actually transfer the unreleased Darkrai and Arceus caught through glitches/cheats from Diamond (and only Diamond, as the original events that gave them away had Trainer IDs from Diamond, so Pearl will not work) through Poké Transporter, with a few extra steps: BEFORE REACHING GEN 5, Darkrai must be at least Level 50 (as it was that level in Platinum) and not know moves it only learned in DP, and Arceus must be Level 100 and cannot be shiny.
I use pokebank today it still work for now but not sure how long it will work
I want to replay my old 3DS games fresh soon but I'm not sure I will be able to move my mons out since I only recently made a Pokebank account despite playing every Gen since childhood. If anyone knows if its doable pls let me know. Otherwise, I don't stress to much over it since we have a well established cycle of remakes and we could even see remasterings like how Skyrim went to Switch despite being a 2011 game.

Asking this here cause it seems like the place people might know. Is there any way AT ALL to move pokemon from the Switch/Gen 8 back onto the 3DS? Moving my collection from the 3DS onto switch was the worst mistake I ever made. Gen 8 was enough to make me drop the series entirely and I'd give anything to be able to move everything back.

If you're willing to mod your 3DS you can install PKSM which is basically a local Pokemon Bank/Poke Transporter for Generation 1 to 7. Unlike Pokemon Bank, it supports two-way cross gen transfer provided that the Pokemon, its abilities and moves are legal/exists for the generation it's going to.
Admittedly, it's also a save editor which makes cheating in these games piss easy, but for the "Pokemon Bank-like" features that it provides I wouldn't mind looking over those dubious aspects of the tool.
I'm gonna be honest, I've modded my 3DS and it went extremely well, and if the community for whatever reason doesn't find a way to organically keep Bank going the way they have the online features of the DS games, that's probably what I'll do once the servers go down.

Dude that offline solution has existed for years already. Its called PKSM. Its a bank clone for 3DS except this one allows for events injection and is compatible with gen 1 - 7

But why tho, honestly the servers are not used that much and im sure the apps already share the same servers anyway but GF just wants to cut you off so you can pay more money later

Yes, as I mentioned in the pinned comment, they will be supported beyond the closure for the WiiU and 3DS eShop
However, because the servers are run by Nintendo, there will be a point in the not-so-distant future where they won't be supported anymore. That point could be months from now, a few years from now, we don't know

Ah, the Pokémon Bank Celebi...I love it so much and still have it with me to this day, retaining its special event move: Hold Back. Before the Virtual Console Crystal Celebi was made available, the Bank Celebi was the only one at that point you could give a name to as it had your OT.
The announcement of Bank's eventual closure was a huge wake-up call for me - since the announcement, I've been revisiting my old Pokémon games like LeafGreen and Platinum, completing any postgame activities I wanted to get done so I feel completely comfortable with transferring all the Pokémon from those games up to HOME where they're preserved for future generations to come. I knew the day was gonna come, but it's still really sad all the same. I'm gonna miss Brigette greeting me and gifting me stuff...they should bring her back in a future mainline game, spinoff or transfer app. If Pokémon Burnet, a character from a Generation 5 spinoff game, can appear in Alola, I don't see why Brigette can't be brought back in a similar way.

Anyway, as for what I've done so far in case you were curious: For LeafGreen, I've completed the Sevii Islands quest, caught Raikou and Mewtwo, then did the Elite Four rematch, all while using a team not involving my starter and the Legendary Birds as I had already transferred them long ago.
Moving onto Platinum, I've transferred the Sevii/Kanto team there and trained up my Sinnoh team some more, completing the Stark Mountain quest. Doing some serious grinding as we speak, using a Lucky Egg I picked up along the way. I plan on trading my SoulSilver over to train them up since HGSS retained GSC's bad level curve, coupled with no easy, accessible way to grind lots of EXP very fast (that I know of). Once I've found the remaining Legendaries and beaten the Elite Four rematch, I'll do the same with SoulSilver. And I think that'll be it - there's practically nothing important to do with any other of my games.
Highly doubt they’ll shutter Bank any time soon. As long as there are people playing DS games, they’ll keep it open.
@@manoftruth0935 It's going down one way or another. They may have confirmed Bank will still be operational for the foreseeable future, but they encourage us to transfer ASAP, so it could probably be a couple-or-so months.
@@RoseSupremeDoubt it, especially with PalWorld on the rise. One wrong move, and the video games fall, then the card sales, then the merchandise sales, in that order. The video games are the bedrock sales, and removing the methods of transfer to newer generations will destroy the franchise because long time players, the core of the base, will leave, and encourage potential newcomers to stay away and put their time and money towards something else.

Let’s be real for a second, you probably would still be able to transfer Pokemon through those means, just skipping generations and all that, just through different softwares that are out there on the internet that you can download on your windows computer (Given they’re not viruses), and still be able to transfer Pokemon from gens 1 - 7. People are modding their 3DS’s to make that stuff happen anyways, and it’s like, you can transfer your Pokemon to Gen 9 games sure, but the issue is that the services they provide just let them sit there, and if you miss just ONE payment, you would have to restart your Pokemon journey ALL OVER AGAIN! I’m not upset over the fact that Nintendo and Game freak want to stop this shit, but at the same time, stop taking the shit away from us, otherwise, if we have to pirate shit that’s leagues better than what we got currently, then we’ll use those instead. I deadass would be okay with physically and digitally modding my 3DS until it meets my specifications, and having multiple 3DS’s on top of that, and if I get a switch again in the near future, then shit, at that point I got the money. But what I’ll always say is just, if it does end up happening, and you’re like me where you didn’t get those in the past, there’s always an alternative, don’t freak out.

a wonderful wish for pokemon day which is coming up would be to give us gens 1 to 3 on the nso service which would solve some things for the older gens, plus allow us to truly take advantage of the pokemon stadium games as rental pokemon just arent the same and the originals that you worked with or glitched in lol, another thing is they so need a gen 5 remake now at this point as we got a gen 4 remake both past and present in a way, and it will suck that gens 6 and 7 are stuck still to the 3ds but im sure that once the next console comes those games will hopefully get remakes along side a possible gen 10 set of games, anyone else remember once upon a time where the goal was gotta catch em all and now with no national dex in the games you honestly just go for the core pokedex in game and forget about the now 1025 or 1026 total pokemon that are out there
To this day I haven't really had a desire to play Stadium in NSO outside of the mini-games, just isn't the same without being able to use my own Pokémon from RBY. Stadium is like DLC expansions before DLC was a thing, for Gen 1/2 Pokémon games. I only have the Virtual Console versions right now but I've considered getting cartridge versions for the Gen 1 and 2 games and getting Stadium 1/2 to play through them again. One day!

That's fair, Gen 7 *was* the last generation all the Pokémon that were available at the time were on a single game

And tbh anything past gen 6 is just terrible imo anyway. Shame to see such a beloved series lose it's last shred of credibility. I hope they announce 4 mainline pokemon games slated for release this year at the pokemon presents thing.

Good thing I modded my 3DS to get Pokémon Red on virtual console, I couldnt buy it cause problems with my credit card... And I only did so cause I wanted to do the Shiny Mew glitch to transfer it to Violet (Austin john plays made a great video about it btw). I just want something like a "Pokémon Classic Collection" with HOME compatibility so we can transfer Pokémon from older games to current gens in a easier way istead of doing all kinds of janky stuff just to transfer 1 Pokémon from Ruby to Scarlet for example.
I didn't mention it but the 8F glitch is great! I wanna try it out myself sometime
If you were gonna pick a shiny mew then should have done a “legit” gen 3 instead of the hacked gen 1

At least if you make a video make it about why Gamefreak should retain these services they'll hear our concerns and take it into consideration as opposed to not hearing it. What we, as the players, need is for Gamefreak to coincide with our interests not just only their business interests.
