Using the old race to drive in the new one is a good idea. Rather than using the old bearing to drive it fully home, which as you experienced can damage the new race, cut a slot right through the old race using a grinder/dremmel and you can drive the new race fully home without fear of jamming the old race - you can simply lever it back out.
