The personal thoughts at the end of the chapter, the "obvious criticism" as he describes it, was so CRINGE...the idea that Zinn cant or isn't the best person to teach or speak to the history of the Iroquois, or describe the structure of Iroquois society, simply because he was a privileged white guy (he was, no dispute with that) is just completely off base. Identity politics has it's place for helping to establish solidarity within movements and everything, but this is getting way out of hand, freakin gate-keeping who can tell history, oh my god. Can someone explain to me how because he is a white man, he looses credibility to speak to this issue, despite having read and studied it, and having familiarized himself with numerous primary texts and other leading scholarly works when it came to the issue of indigenous tribes? The BIG freaking irony here I guess I will point out, is that Zinn literally says... "I prefer to try to tell the story of the discovery of America from the view points of the Arawaks, of the constitutions from the standpoint of the slaves, of andrew jackson as seen by the cherokees, of the civil war as seen by the new york irish, of the mexican war as seen by the deserting soilders of scots army, of the rise of industrialism as seen by the young women in the lowell textile mills, of the spanish american war as seen by the cubans, the conquest of the philippines as seen by black soldiers on luzon the gilded age as seen by southern farmers the first world war as seen by socialists the second world war as seen by pacifists the new deal as seen by blacks in harlem the post-war american empire as seen by peons in latin america and so on to the limited extent that any one person however he or she strains can see history from the standpoint of others" Like, no crap bro, zinn is a white guy, He cant be the indigenous, black slave, cherokee, deserting soilder of scots army, new york irish, young women in textile mill, cuban, black soilder, southern farmer, socialist, pacifist, peon in latin america that you want him to be telling this kind of history. No one can. It's actually a good thing that we have multiple voices contributing to the telling of history. Zinn being a white guy gives hime more power to drown out the narrative other white men say about the founding fathers of the USA and of manifest destiny and Christopher Columbus, and all that other bull shit. Howard Zinn is what we call an ALLY, and he can speak and preach his knowledge. @@AudioAnarchy Lol, no I appreciate the recording. Your "obvious criticism" at the end of the recording though, where you say, "Is Howard Zinn the best to be telling the history of the Iroquois people...no" (1:21:22), your saying Iroquois people are the best to tell their own history. You go on to offer a more "authoritative voice "(1:21:08) with Indigenous People's History (IPH), which implies that there is some form of hierarchical legitimacy conferred to historians in their ability to tell a historical narrative, based on their personal identity, rather than their education or academic credentials. This is totally a form of gatekeeping. Unless I am mistaking, I understand your comment to mean that the author of IPH is a more authoritative historian on the subject of indigenous peoples based on her racial identity, ancestry, and direct connection to the narrative. While I agree the narrative and history of her people has impacted her lived experience in a way that it never could for a white person, this doesn't bestow her more credibility as a historian to talk about the history of the circumstances or events that her own people endured. This is just a criticism of your criticism, please don't me too seriously. I understand the impulse to think people have a right to their own histories, but again, that is gatekeeping, history belongs to everyone, not just to the winners, and not just to the people/tribe/culture trying to tell their own history. Fuck, I digress, this is a whole different philosophical thing. Also, interestingly, the author of IPH was the daughter of a sharecropper of Scots-Irish ancestry and a mother that Dunbar(the author) believes to have been partially Native American, although her mother never claimed to be Native and Dunbar-Ortiz grew up without any Native heritage.

Great job, i mean short of the not realizing zinn used whites in the same way he used to the word blacks. Like you keep grasping at straws in some weird effort to call zinn racist. Further more there is a book called an indigenous history of the unites states told by...You guessed it, indigenous people. Its in the same vein as this book, like you critique zin for leaving stuff out, yet that part isnt his story nor was it the only story he was trying to tell. Do you have any idea how long this book would of had to of been? The intent of the book is clearly to cover everything history books left out enough to spark interest in real history. It does a great job at that. Reading this book in 7th grade is the reason i know the things i know today. In short i coulda done with out the pretentious ramblings at the end, other then that great job and give zinn a break, he wasnt trying to write a book longer the das kapital that no one would read. His book changed the face of history, its material starting to find its way into schools is why conservatives are freaking out, he opened the door for wave after wave of revelations of hidden histories (such as the indigenous history of the united states)

My AP history teacher give us this book to read
They rock.
So glad students are reading this in school!
So glad your teacher GAVE you this book to read. 😃
@@silverforest4682 My history teacher said that it important to have many perspectives , Example: read a conservative new paper and read a liberal news paper . I think the book is good in some aspect like how Zinn talk about Conflict theory in chp 11, but Zinn is a marxist and it very noticeable for me .
I like listening your Reading.
Happy Zinntennial! Howard Zinn 24Aug 1922- 27JAN 2010
Thank you for making this! And I really like your narration, fuck the guy who said it was ridiculous. Cheers from 🇲🇽!
And so begins my indoctrination into radical socialism.
Enjoy. One day you’ll be so radical you’ll think socialism is a centrist doctrine.
British accent for C C ? Painful
Sorry for damaging the proud legacy of Christopher Columbus
That's oddI rather enjoyed the narrative style and tone
Mr. Ravenclaw, yes the narration sounds unappealing to me too. Looks like we're the only ones though!
thank you for the resource
Nice! Thanks!
You're welcome!
Sitting through the Russian/German sounding accents was rough and distracting. Still appreciate the reading as I have ADHD and can't actually sit and read a book without wanting to rip out my hair! Thank you 🙏🏻
INTERESTING CHANNEL.
Are you reading this? I love it!
I am! Thanks.
Colombo (aka "Colombus") was an Italian working for Spain. WHY give him a British accent??
Your natural American accent wouldn't be any less accurate.
I wanted to
Do you really think Chris Columbus had an English accent ? It was probably more of a Spanish maybe Italian type.
my italian accent sucks, so...
Good video
I don't know why but I can't tolerate the pacing of how this is read. It feels like reading a picture book to a 1st grade classroom.
I have to pause so that *everyone* can see the illustrations.
Tomie dePaola put a lot of work into them.
This shit was funny as hell I wouldn't have read it otherwise
(your voices not the material)
Lmao, hell yeah, my dude. Thanks!
Can't take this seriously when the guy uses a snarky British accent when ever trying to portray a spannish or italian.
Surprise surprise they don't teach this in school
You are doing God's work. I am in love with your channel and I'm no commie.
You will be! Thanks
Bonnie. I'm responding to your comment. Practice, Practice, Practice!
So, Columbus went to Oxford?
Their Spears were made of cane! LOL 😆
This reader is fantastic… better than Howard from Big Bang Theory…👍
Thanks for the audiobook!
Geez, I hate Columbus...
It turns out...he sucks!
@@AudioAnarchy even more i thought
@@kacper6251 don't worry; I'm currently recording chapter 7, where Andrew Jackson first appears. There's an even more loathsome dude a-comin'
A bit too critical of Stalin but great first chapter so far.
Sounds like an incel wrote " the people's history of women "
extremely harrowing
Columbus was Genoese and working for the Spanish; British accent wholly inappropriate. :P
Incredibly annoying narration. Other audio versions are available.
Over enthusiastic narration. Other audio versions are available.
Why is he reading Columbus's words with a British accent?
He was Italian for fuck's sake.
Mama Mia!
I'm feelin dem good vibrations
Our future is so bright we gotta wear shades
Sho hope we gets to make dem good vibrations wen I adult🤗
Columbus was Italian, and spoke Spanish also. why narrate him as a scoffing English aristocrat?
Because my Italian accent is bad
As is my Spanish

What country has raised a more diverse set of humans from poverty to riches? Or even poverty to mediocrity?
@@theLunarDJ Maybe but what county is that? And is that "underclass" the same people all the time? why do humans from all over the world yearn to come to that country?
The Kingdom of Mali or maybe Venezuela *mutes chat*
@@AudioAnarchy 😂😂😂
Bro reading this like it’s fiction
Why would Columbus have a British Accent?
Because my Italian sounded like Mario
Jesus Christ loves you
ridiculous voices and sneering tone of the narration is very damaging to the material. narrator should be forced to listen to this tripe non stop toll he drops dead like one of the unfortuate indians. howard zinn would hate this.
there is another version by the publisher "andi burridge". that version sounds more pleasant
while i agree its annoying I feel like thats a bit far
I will drop dead one day, wish granted
@@AudioAnarchy I am sorry, i was making a cruel joke , i shall delete it. You did a fantastic job
@@AudioAnarchy Your narration and "ridiculous voices" helped keep my attention. Good work!
Why does Columbus have an English accent. Columbus was Italian or at least Spanish. So annoying
Why does Howard Zinn's skin color matter to you?
For very obvious reasons, considering the content and stated purpose of his work.
Thanks for this great reading. I wish you also read in Spanish lol.
anarchist who believes in land ownership?
I mean, I “believe” in it in the same way that I “believe” the police can arrest me for made-up causes. It’s a material reality of our world. Should land be used to the benefit of all, rather than building equity for the owning class? Yes. Is it? No.
I cannot stand this guy's voice. I can't share this with my ignorant brethren, because the speaker's voice is so self-righteous. Looking for another one.
Neither can I.
god i hate your points of inflection, but thanks anyway for the audio book
❤❤
Check out the tribes that Columbus immediately became familiar with: The Taino and The Caribs. The Taino feared the Caribs who both practiced slavery and cannibalism.
