The nettle leaves and stems are covered in tiny hairs with a tiny poison sac which, just like a bee sting, becomes detached and continues to push more poison into the skin that's why it feels worse afterwards. Wash the affected area with hot soapy water as soon as possible to remove as many hairs as possible and hopefully reduce the discomfort. Rubbing the area with a dock leaf is supposed to counteract the poison, they usually grow in the same area.
The best way to treat it is to wash the area with soap and water, take an antihistamine, and apply hydrocortisone cream. Stinging nettles trigger an allergy reaction so allergy medication helps a lot.

It's the teeny, tiny hairs on stinging nettle that sting. They really hurt and they hurt for hours. Her boyfriend is a pr*ck and she needs to ditch him. They do make great pasta and risotto though. Pick them with rubber gloves on and leave for an hour or two before you use them and treat them like spinach.

They do sting, leaving an itchy rash that lasts about an hour or so. but it's only the soft skin, backs of hands, legs etc.
