Your video popped up on my youtube feed just a few minutes ago and this is the first time I've known of your channel. I live in the US and want to thank you for helping me to feel a little bit better. I have been devestated by the electon results here and was sobbing as I thought about all the people who will be hurt and worse. I have subscribed now to your channel. You did a great service by addressing the situation here and giving us some ways to cope with it.

American over here. I’ve been watching BookTubers for some time and this is my first time ever coming across your channel. It must be something in the RUclips algorithm gods that led me to you today, after the devastating last couple of days. I thank you for your kind words of hope; it’s great to know there are others aboard who empathize with us that tried to prevent the outcome of 11/05. It’s going to be a tough 4yrs enduring his reign (hopefully not longer) but my hope is that we will recover not too long after, though hope is very slim knowing all the power he will have. Included in that hope is that our country’s relationship to our allies will not be irreparable as I know he will bring damage not only at home but abroad. So again, THANK YOU!!!! Best wishes to you with your new upcoming bookshop! It’s a book lovers dream you are pursuing 💜

“If you’re watching this in the future then thank god, bc that means there is a future”. 😂 Hilarious. But so very real right now. What a horrible juxtaposition we find ourselves in!

I'm trying to get back into reading after a long hiatus and this is a wonderful list. Also, thank you so much for not being coy about the situation and actually talking about it. It kind of hurts when people try to be vague so they don't get backlash. It's helpful to hear kind, rational people say how much this sucks.

But the thing is, not everyone did. Under trump, life got worse for a number of different social groups, in ways that still are felt. Just right now, I'm thinking of asylum seekers, maternal mortality rate, covid deaths, deportations, etc.

I love the optimism but the senate house and presidency are conservative now which means the Supreme Court is stacked against us for a generation at least :(

Just found your channel and love what you’re saying, especially the insight that we can use anxiety as a signal or an alert to help us listen to ourselves, rather than something to get lost in. Glad I found your channel!

The Murderbot Diaries are a good escapism series. Plus, any fantasies/sci-fi books that showcase how a group of heroes or just regular people can stand up to and overcome empires, authoritarian regimes, and evil dictators or corporations. Here's other great nonfiction books for our times: Hope in the Dark: Untold Histores, Wild Possibilites by Rebecca Solnit; We: Reviving Social Hope by Ronald Aronson; Coming Back to Life: Practices to Reconnect Our Lives, Our World by Joanna Macy; The Art of Protest: Culture and Activism from the Civil Rights Movement to the Streets of Seattle by T. V. Reed; Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook by Mark Bray; and Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time by Paul Rogat Loeb. At least read the Solnit and Aronson books for hope. There's probably many more recent books to help with the trauma we are all probably going to go through.

Thank you for this! I've just requested A Psalm for the Well Built from my library and also put a few of those on my TBR, including Who's Afraid of Gender displayed in the background.

What is doing it for me right now, is Chuck Tingle (for the Love is Real and all the energy to make real counterculture), Margaret Killjoy (for honest action advice), and Victor Frankl (for perspective, VERY IMPORTANT). Not escapism (mostly), but, helps me with the reality. All your choices are good. I live in Ohio, am trans, and I am better off than many others.

Such a heartfelt video, thank you Ross. And some great recommends in there! All the best of luck with your bookshop, can’t wait to visit 😊 Now, I think I’m going to go re-read one of Mr Iain M Banks lovely Culture novels, maybe Look to Windward or Player of Games. I could do with a shot of genuinely utopian, post-scarcity optimism right now..

That was a nice little chat on this day of rather inauspicious news from across the ocean. And for once you mention a few books that I’ve actually read: Tolkien, Pratchett, and Chambers. I read most of the Narnia series long ago, but I don’t remember whether I read “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”. I’ve noted the two non-fiction books at the end; maybe I’ll investigate further. Good luck with the bookshop; but I’m afraid I buy only e-books these days.
P.S. I bought a copy of “But What Can I Do?”. As a UK citizen living in Spain, I doubt that there’s anything much I can do, but the book may be of some interest anyway.

Love the sentiment of this video. I'd recommend Infomacracy by Malka Older, and Terra Ignota by Ada Palmer as two sci-fi series that show feature futures, but ones that have their own problems, that follow characters working hard to solve them.

Utopia for Realists is one that I recommend to everyone all the time. I re-read it earlier this year and it's amazing how relevant it still is (I think it was originally published in 2013-14?)

When i was at the library today, i got a non-fiction book that i had been eying for a little while, but i thought this would be a great time. It's called Everyday Utopia by Kristen R. Ghodsee. It looks at different societies and communities that have existed throughout history and exist now that do things in a slightly more unusual way. I'm excited to get into it to expand my mind on what is possible.

The biggest damage that has happened is the supreme court of US is now a conservative majority til 2047. Things are fucked for bodily autonomy, progressive politics in US for s long time. A transnational reproductive economy tending to the crisis that is brewing in US is maybe the only thing that can help. People will be moving to other nations to get the help they need.

I'm still in a state of shock, and the election was 3 days ago. I do not understand what has happened. I'm not only stunned by the people in my country; I'm well and truly ANGRY at them. I'm 68 years old and I'm going to live the rest of my life with the consequences of this disgusting, horrible beast that is Trump. I feel like I'm treading through mud most of the time. I had stopped reading the Sunday before the election and I've not started up again since, so -- reading slump I guess. I just can't believe we got it so wrong, and that the fate of our nation, and the world, is in the hands of ignorant, easily mislead Americans. I apologize to the rest of the world, but I am secure in the knowledge that I didn't vote for him and I live in California. I own The Hobbit. Maybe I'll pause the book I'm currently reading and start up something completely different. Thanks so much for this timely video, and all the best with your bookstore, Ross and Laura.

Fellow Californian here and I did my part as well. I share your fear for our future at home and abroad especially knowing he will have so much power. And I also share your anger towards our fellow Americans especially those that I have a close relationship to…so epically misguided they are. We must keep doing our part and not let others look away from the harm he will do as we know he is capable of doing so much. Let us hold on to every grain of hope we can 💜
