  • Spoon carving is riding the crest of a wave of popularity...and for very good reasons, as West Australian woodworker Greg Miller explains. Greg takes you through the basic process splitting a section of green wood and shaping it with spoon carving chisels and knives. In the September 2015 issue of Australian Wood Review Greg writes about green woodworking techniques as applied to spooncarving. The magazine is out now on iPad and print copies will soon be distributed.

Well worth listening to in spite of the terrible background noise. Greg has a sweet way of describing his approach to carving spoons from green wood branches. He listens to what that particular piece of wood is telling him and adjusts his carving to bring out the unique aesthetic of the material.

Thanks Lee. Apologies once again for the terrible sound. There wasn't an opportunity to reshoot this footage but we wanted to share Greg's words.

Yes the sound was rough, but I really enjoyed Greg's presentation and description of the process of seeing spoons in round wood and crotches. Also his discussion of technique. I really liked the looks of the bench that he was working at, very simple with dog holes and an end vice. Any chance that there is a set of plans or perhaps just some clear photos or diagrams. I'd like to build one. Thanks.

+Bruce Smith Hi Bruce, Greg wrote a story for issue 88 of Wood Review magazine about green spoon carving. You can still download this issue from iTunes if you wish. See our website at www.woodreview.com.au for more info about the magazine. Thanks for watching...as mentioned below we almost didn't put this video up because of the poor sound quality but decided to anyway because we thought what Greg said was really informative. We also didn't have a chance to reshoot the video.

I use food grade mineral oil and will literally my finished spoon in the oil jug two or three times for about 5 mins each. I'm not an expert, but it seems to work so far.

I use birch, maple, aspen, beech, cherry, and walnut a lot. To dry your spoons,it's good to leave them buried in wood shavings to help them dry slowly without cracking. You can also bake them in the oven at 350 for about 15 minutes, this darkens the wood and makes them more water resistant as well.

Could a person take a two-by-four and do the same thing? Would it work or would it break? And what about like a red wood 2 by 4 I'm just trying to think of something that I could pick up and practice on?

Easy to tips and tricks etc etc I've made spoons from what I have in my shop, so far I've used zebrano, hairy oak, huon pine and a bunch of other timbers. I just see some timber as being harder work than others.

Dry wood is harder than green wood, but you can try on anything. That's the beauty of working something like this - it's on you what you want to try, what you'll accept and what you'll invest. Good luck m8!
