On is used for the placed to be put like. On the table, on the ceiling, while the onto shows the movement to be placed. Pouring the oil onto the stove.

Most welcome☺
When I first came to live in Spainfrom the UK I used to watch cookery programmes on TV to improve my Spanish as the actions matched the words. It is a very good way to pick up vocabulary.
One little point though. I never use the word sift as in sift the flour. I sieve It.
So I looked it up in my trusty dictionary.
My "New OED" (hardback book. 1998) has sieve as a noun and a verb but sift only as a verb. It can be used in place of to sieve. But personally I would only use sift as a synonym for to sort. Eg to sift through the nails/needles/buttons etc. to find one the right size.
I suppose it depends how the words were used by your parents.
One of the reasons I love my native English language is the often subtle differences in meaning/usage of synonyms. And the way one word has several unrelated meanings and or pronunciations. Eg. Bow.
I'm so glad thanks for your valuable feedback it means a lot
