This was a great interview! Not only did it inspire me to go harder as a music producer, but he was speaking the truth. Artist who make fluff turn up music don't deserve awards. And great artist shouldn't stoop to the turn up level to get the attention of the audience.
With this guy it's about the music and culture. This is almost unheard of, in our generation. I feel like a fu*king outcast when I speak of the love or importance of culture in general... smh

I think people ie "the purest" just like for r&b or hip hop to be about pain and struggle because the moment someone makes a song on a trap beat they call it ignorant. I listen to the pop station every now and and when I do those are aren't saying nothing at all. People take music to serious. You see how he took 7/11 and drug it out like that was the only song in her album. Also why should she win a Grammy when her album came out two years ago.... There have been so many album that was probably way better that came out than hers. Did he even write on her album because if not he might be salty.

You ain't more passionate about r&b than I am, Rico. I'm so passionate that I've studied people's voices and pretty much know anything technical that they do. When ya'll gave Jhene Aiko the tile of "The New Face of R&B," I almost lost my mind. There really isn't horrible songwriting in r&b because the stuff out isn't r&b. For example, Kelly Price and Kem made true blue r&b albums and they were completely overlooked. I like Beyonce, but the tone of her voice drives me crazy. When she sings songs like Déjà vu and Me, Myself & I, I can rock with her. lol at everybody not saying what they *really* wanna say about her. I don't blame them though. Talk about her and ya' ass will come up short. She don't play.

Yes, it can be a fun song, but lyrically there is no substance. He was saying you can make a fun song, but you can put some thought into it. (The girls just wanna have fun reference) 711 is a terrible song, the beat is nice, but literally I think Beyonce was drunk one night in the studio & just started saying bullshit & I think she knows that. He gets it wrong about the beatles on lucy in the sky with diamonds. The Beatles and John himself have said Lucy in the sky with diamonds was NOT about LSD. It caused a controversy at the time, where people thought the same thing. John Lennon wrote the song, so go watch his interview with Dick Cavett it's on youtube. John and Paul have said explicitly that it was actually about Sean, John's son drew a picture and called it lucy in the sky with diamonds. John was inspired by that and wrote a song called lucy in the sky with diamonds.

I think its nothing wrong with fun songs every song does not have to be about a struggle or pain. Every song does not have to have an underlying meaning to it. I LOVE nirvana its my favorite band but to be honest some of the shit kurt cobain wrote wasn't about Nothing at all. Music is a subjective thing, its really hard to say what a song was about unless that artist said it. A lot of lyric meanings are made up by fans.
