GingerRunner.com reviews the Salomon Speedcross 3 trail running shoe. This is one bad-ass trail shoe. The shoe itself is extremely light, ruggedly built and durable. I wish the shoe was more minimal, and allowed for more flexibility in my natural running gait, it is my current rugged trail runner.
This pair was provided by Salomon for review.

After watching this review and reading dozens of others...I just broke down and got it. I am finding it a pretty impressive shoe, particularly because you can now get it for under $100. It is quite awesome in muddy conditions and grips well in most everything else. I would not recommend it for on-road to off-road running, but find it GREAT for trail work.

Bought a pair of these this week, only 3 years after you reviewed them. Sweet trail shoes !!

Bought this shoe and wore it in a Spartan Race last weekend. I couldn't have been more happy with the performance, especially on hilly/muddy terrain. Big fan now. I do agree with the shoe being narrow at the toes.

I picked up a pair of these a couple of weeks ago at an REI garage sale, and I love them. I'm not a road runner, but I'm getting into trail hiking via my love of hiking, so a non-minimalist, very structured shoe is very good for my style. Great review.

I'm coming up on 400 miles with this shoe. I've ran one tough mudder and two spartan races. The shoe has held up surprisingly well. I wish the heel didn't have the huge drop. I love the colors and design (minus the 12 mm drop).

Best shoe I've owned to date. I have some wide-ass feet but somehow this shoe works for me. Comfort level is beyond what I expected. Thanks for the review

I live in Colorado and run on Pikes Peak with decomposed granite trails. This is by far my favorite trail shoe. It grips like no other and I never fear losing control over the side of the mountain. I've had no issues getting from the road to the trails. The lugs are soft and allow for brief pavement running. I have over 300 miles on my first pair and they have been retired for yard work.

Todd Short dejan ivanov have you run in yours on concrete instead of the trail? If so, how was the experience?

    • @TRSWOODWORKING
      @TRSWOODWORKING 7 лет назад

Fine on the road for short distance as far as stability; however, I wouldn't do long distance on concrete because it would eat the tread like I eat Jellybellys.

Interesting review since I've had the shoe for a couple of years now. I'm turning towards "minimalistic" running and this shoe feels wrong in that department but as you say it's really nice on some terrains.
I also definitely agree with that the front is too narrow and that the toebox just doesn't leave enough space. This kind of rugged shoe with the kind of material that they use on the outside, I think prevents the foot and toes from stretching out the material leading to more space in the front. So I've had some problems with it being too tight in the front, leading to pain.
It should probably get a 5 out of 5 for quality. Another nice feature with this shoe is how well it handles water and mud. After a run you can easily flush them clean with water and they dry up in an instance.

Have you had the same pair for a couple of years? Wondering how long they will last me if I'm doing casual on and off road running.

Hey GingerRunner.Great review.Bought the shoes and love them in Canada's rough winter season. Might have liked to hear you speak about lacing system (unikk),front shoe sealed from water and mud and I totaly agree with Guillermo below. If you buy on line absolutely must go half a size up.Keep up the reviews, your one of the best on YT.

The grip sole looks like a beast. The rubber protection is a terrific design. I don't care for the color...are there other colors? Heel drop is thick for the heel-to-toe runner, I'd imagine. Too narrow. I love wide toeboxes and wide shoes in general. Can't take away from the score due to its beefy build, because it is a light running boot as you mentioned.

@jeffdustin the heeldrop is actually only 9mm not 12mm, the speedcross 2's were a 12mm.

Considering getting one cause they are on 50% sale this week. How does this hold up getting river dipped? Im concerned with the rubber soles coming off from regular moist exposure. Tight on the budget and i think these are amazingly nice to look and wear, but i hope they stick around longer on my shoe rack. These would be my first trail shoes.

Great review man, really informative. I really liked the Speedcross 2 and I'm thinking of getting the successor. One thing though, maybe I should get a pair of shoes that can handle different terrains better; the sole of the Speedcross is made of rather soft rubber and I always had a guilty conscience while on asphalt because I was worried that it'll wear off really fast (and it felt like it too). Do you think the Sense Mantra would be a better choice?

  • @brucehodson2763

I have run in Salomons and I have to say: I hate the lacing system. I can never make it stay as snugged as I demand and have torn it out to replace it with 1.5mm cord to tie in a basic bow.
I also found their toe box to be too narrow. If my current model (XA COMP 7) weren't being used as backpacking shoes I wouldn't have them at all. Switching, for trail running, to something else.

You've reviewed the Pearl Izumi N1 trail in the past. I have both the N1 and N2, and am considering the Salomon Speedcross 3, how would you say the Pearls and Salomons compare in, mostly fit, but performance as well. One thing I have noticed with the Pearls, is the sole does not last particularly long. Thank You!!!

I'm crazy about buying this in Brazil. But it's really, really hard. Hard to find some colors, the climashield version, and when you find, hard to pay. More than twice expensive than in US, something like 280 usd. Someone has any tip, hint to buy this by here?

Are these kind of shoes good for casual wear as well? Or should i be looking for ones that dont have the giant lugs on the bottom? I really like this look of shoe, and im tired of going through standard tennis shoes every few months.

For me Salomon shoes are too flashy for causal wear. You'd look like a Christmas tree. But hey, it's only my opinion. Cheers

wearing the lugs on hard surfaces will wear them out really quickly. it is not meant to be a casual shoe. you will be tossing out 120.00 if you buy them to wear around town because the tread will adios in no time.
