So wonderful! As soon as Workbook comes out, I will publish a story called Crooks and Nannies, it’ll be a mystery ….
i switched from windows to linux like two weeks ago and man, linux is great. runs faster better and stronger
I'm 10 mins into "For the love of Linux" and all I've heard so far is about how windows is better than apple. Am I in the right place?
Welcome aboard! I switched in 2008 and actually made a living out of it. The ride might be tough at times, but its totally worth it: freedom to learn, freedom to try stuff, compute sovereignty, data sovereignty, and privacy above everything. Have fun!
I learned about this guy a few days ago with his Ubuntu customization spin. This presentation is legit. No wonder Basecamp is such a good product. Way to go, David. I totally get your reasons why you picked Ubuntu, but I want you embracing the Nix{OS} flake! ❄️🤓🖖👊
I'm a big fan of Regolith Desktop
Can we start an open source campaign to port textmate to linux ? Would be such a good experiment
I started using iBook G4 in 2004 and I paid for Textmate. I still love it. I even miss OmniGraffle sometimes. Now, I'm using Debian.
I love my Framework! But I actually made a custom body that is less of a laptop and more like a portable iMac for ergonomics 🙂
PS: I'd love Linux versions of Basecamp and Hey. I'm using a Chrome wrapper, which works OK, but native notifications, tray icons, and opening links in the default browser (Firefox) would make for a better experience.
The custom body is cool, want to show it off?
I love your idea with Omakub!
A lot of really big players moving over to Linux...
Is the new far frontier on BSD 🤣?
I always was skeptical developing Rails on Linux/Windows because I was so used to developing on a mac.
Couple of months ago I wanted to start a new project and I didn't want to use my work mac for it and since I sold my personal mac, I thought yea why not, let's try WSL on my windows machine and it runs lovely. If not for the games I play that require Windows, I would completely switch to Linux at this point.
you can always have dual boot and dedicate part of your storage for linux os ;)
The nice things is that from Linux you can run Windows and even MacOS within Linux
Welcome home DHH
i can't live with gnome. i neeeeed kde. have you tried kde6 on the neon distro? kde6 runs on wayland now! i mean dolphin is just far finer. but i'll spin it up and see how it is this weekend.
I'm glad to see someone in the mainstream talking about how Apple and Microsoft switched places - Microsoft is doing all this open source stuff and Apple is making outdated overpriced locked-down technology (Safari is the new IE, most new iPhone features have been on Android for a while). I've been saying this stuff for years, but it's nice to see someone well known in the field agree on this.
What to do if linux can run on a potato 😂
I love linux and I see no other option for our servers. I also can easily switch to linux as my workflow is pretty terminal based.
I switched to apple and I remember my decision come after setting up my dev environment in 2 weeks, then, one night I decided to watch a video but I needed a codec. I installed it, I watched the video and closed the laptop. Next day, opened laptop, and guess what? Kernel panic. I got exactly the same scenario twice in 6 months. I sold my vacation to buy an apple and get rid of the kernel panics.
I'm sure it's much better today!
20:40 Nooks & crannies...
Any company that touts how green they are while soldering everything together is lying to you.
@dhh can I buy some of your old mac's 😁
