The Amaran lights are plastic, very different from the Aputure 1200. So the first question you need to answer for yourself is how important to you is build quality and durability? Do you need RGB? Not knowing the answer to these questions I cannot say. But for me, if I work regularly on location and not having a need for RGB, I would opt for the Aputure 300x.
The 150c & 300c have +/- G/M this makes them more accurate as far a color reproduction and ability to match the room environment. The 200X S while good, still is not color accurate to a 0.0 correction gel, due to the the lack of +/- G/M. The 150c & 300c can be. So in terms of color accuracy and dialing the exact color you need, the new ones are much better, IMO. Great review!
Easier to match other lights, but not necessarily more accurate, depending on what you compare it to. But yes, these have been really good lights for us.
Great video. Looking into purchasing my first light but I’m having trouble figuring out how much wattage I need. More specifically I wonder if the 200xs is powerful enough so I can booklight a subject or two from some distance.
@@curtisjuddQ) how would 2 heads both 200X S fare IYO for increased power and positional flexibility vs one more powerful Apurture Lightstorm 300 or 600X Pro do? Clearly a 600 XPro is a lot more cost, waterproof, more rugged etc so by no means a direct alternative.
Hey, thanks for the great video. I noticed in the comments that you said you'd take the 150C over the Nanlite Forza 60C. I was was wondering if you could elaborate on why you'd prefer the Amaran?
I've got the Amaran 200x and use it with a Godox lantern. It's great and easy for someone like me who doesn't want to muck around too much. One thing I was wondering is, do these things ever wear out or lose effectiveness at some point? Just curious. Thanks Curtis. I enjoy your presentations and calm demeanor.
the 150c and 300c are both more durableand made of stronger materials than the 200x though. the yoke is metal and the bowen's mount is much stronger than the 200x
Summary first! It maybe better for clip views to locate summary to the last part, but I really like it because I can get quick information that I wanted to see without moving back and forth.
Thank you Curtis for these reviews. I plan to buy the Amaran 200x S light after I watched you review about it this morning and use it as a KEY light for interviews. I was planning to buy an RGB light like the PIXEL K80 because it's cheaper. Do you think it's better to stick with AMARAN and get an RGB light from them like the 150C or 300C? Or is it better for my small budget to go for the cheaper key light AMARAN 60xs and the RGB 150C?
It depends on how much output you need from your key light. In a space where you can turn off all the other lights and block any light coming in from windows, a smaller light like the 60Xs should be fine. But if you're needing to overpowering any existing light, you'll need a more powerful key light than the 60Xs.
A question. If i have a heavy softbox like lightdome 150, then how can i attach it directly to stand and then attach plastic light like 200x with it. Is there any other adapter i need to attach softbox to stand directly ?
I use a jaw vice grip to hold on to the outer edge of the soft box's ring and then attach the light to the Bowens mount. Here are several jaw vice grip examples bhpho.to/3rNnLSZ Full disclosure - the link is an affiliate link.
Thanks for the questions. 1) not sure, will need to measure. What color are you looking for the lux measurement on? 2) Microphone is the Sennheiser MKH8050 (link in description)
I am interested in this light, however I am worried about the output. Judging by the specs at 5600k, 300c is less bright than 100d or even 60d, which makes it significantly less versatile. Is that true?
Single color lights are always more efficient that full color lights. I’m not sure what types of lighting designs you do, but for talking head, the 150c was way more sufficient than I needed.
Whats the most affordable LED with the most accurate color rendition ? When I say affordable I'm talking around $150-200 -- Its really a light I will use for painting arts crafts -- LOL!! But Id like something I can reasonably depend on when mixing paint.
I bought the new 60 x s about a week ago. I understand their very different lights for different purposes but if you only could buy one which would you go for. It seems like the 150 c is a whole lot more versatile but if I know I’m gonna be using the light as a key light most of the time the 60 x s feels okay and has some convenience advantages. Would love to hear opinions, I’m thinking of sending the 60 x s back
@@curtisjudd awesome thank you so much for the advice!!! Yeah this is my first real light I like the convenience of the size and power options more so I probably will end up keeping the 60 x s and uprgrading later to get something more like an affect light
yeah I agree with Curtis. the 60x is a nice little box and it does wonders for me. ill never regret buying it. RGB's are great for additional creative lighting for coloration. everyone needs a few solid x or d lights for primary.
Can you test the 150C and 300C to see if there is any flickering problem (electronic shutter)? I own several Aputure Amaran LEDs, such as 200D, 200X, F22C, P60C, b7c... All of them have flickering problems above the electronic shutter 1/250/s, and I own more than 10 LEDs of other brands, never encountered this kind of problem. I have sent a detailed test video with Canon R5 to Aputure, but they replied that due to the large number of camera models, there is no guarantee that there will be no flickering problems when taking pictures with the camera, including Canon R5 & R6 Amaran 150C and 300c are indeed very attractive, very light in weight, but we are worried about flickering, which limits some shooting methods. For example, some cameras need to use electronic shutter for high-speed continuous shooting.
@@curtisjudd I use it for portrait photography, aerial yoga shooting, sports photography, etc. Because aerial yoga requires extremely high-speed continuous shooting, so I chose to use leds I don't know if high speed video also has flickering problem, I only have Canon R5 and R series cameras
@@curtisjudd I also own 8 pieces of Nanlite led lights, and there has been no flickering problem in the previous shooting, and I have used different outputs I have tested the LED of my own Aputure Amaran, the electronic shutter will flicker at 1/250s in the worst case, Aputure Amaran F22C will flicker in any situation, even with full power There is no problem when Aputure Amaran 200D only has full power, but there will be flickering at 50% But Nanlite 15c, 30c, 30x have no flickering problem in the 1/1000s electronic shutter in the test, even if it is not using full power, There will be flickering problem at 1/8000s electronic shutter

Do these light perform at full power when in rgbww mode? I know it was a weak point for the similar godox light the colored effects were very weak when in that mode
No light uses all of its LEDs when producing colors. It gives you everything it can depending on the color you choose. When using the 300c for the background here, it was set to 30% as one example.
@@curtisjudd Ok thank you for the information. I saw a few reviews saying the color effects were sort of weak when using that mode so I was concerned, and you just taught me something new. Regards....
Do you know or could you check if these lights work with Sidus links magic program pro? I can’t find any information about that anywhere…. As effects lights that would be extremely helpful 😅
It’s the integration in the Sidus app where you can trigger the lights on a timeline with nodes to create flows or fades with several lights. Not as versatile as DMX, but still extremely handy to control Bluetooth enabled lights like that. Sadly not all lights are supported that’s why I ask… when you’re in a scene/group of lights in Sidus link it’s the earth like button in the middle of the bottom menu. When the lights are greyed out they’re not (yet) supported. Do you think you could check?
@@sGBUCKO My mistake, looking at the Aputure site, they say the Octadome 120 is compatible which I take to mean that the 300C should be able to support its weight. That's a surprise to me.

No, these are full RGB lights plus bi-color white light. They don't come with a focusing lens, but with their Bowens mounts, you can add one or a soft box or barn doors, or a fresnel lens, or a host of other light modifiers.

Umbrellas are absolutely an option and valid approach. However, their big downside is that they spill light EVERYWHERE. So if that look works for what you’re trying to do, then it is a great option. But if you want a more complex lighting design with multiple layers, then other modifiers like softboxes are often preferred.
@@curtisjudd thanks so much for clarifying . And 2 more quick questions. With umbrellas what is the different for shoot through for bounce ? @@curtisjudd I think the not-yet-release DJI MIC 2 kit (that will replace DJI MIC stereo kit) will be AMAZING. Compact , 32bit float and MOSTLY works with DJI mic for RECEIVER LESS stereo audio going straight from mic to camera. No need to plug in mic receiver to the camera. I do think this can and should be the future . Particularly for run and gun. All you do it turn on mics and turn on camera. No cables, no adapters , no mic receivers. Turn on * 2 and hit record. Granted , for the foreseeable future that would probably tie mics to cameras. But maybe not. What are your thoughts on this potential future. DJI has it already with Pocket 3 and (in mono with Action 4). But I think Insta 360 needs to do this for x4 (360 camera obviously REALLY would benefit from no receiver ). But Sony should make a stereo 32bit mic DJI mic 2 like system. Would be great for next Sony cameras. But I don’t hear much chatter about this industry wide. Just what DJI has done. Do you see a future in this kind of change ? - Eric ZORK Alan & Sweetie [ Professional Poets & Bed 🛏️ & Beer🍺 Vloggers ]
@@iamnotapoet I see - by "stereo" you mean two channel wireless microphone systems, got it. 32-bit float is a lot to send over the air, especially in the 2.4GHz range which is often saturated with WiFi and other consumer wireless activity. It isn't impossible, but there's more work to do. In some of the pro systems, they do this in slightly different ways, 24-bit float an example. I don't know if they'll tie mics to cameras - essentially have in-built wireless receivers in the camera. That'll move some of the cost to the camera which means higher camera price, whether you need the receiver or not...so my guess is that it is not likely to be a widely implemented pattern. Maybe in vlogging cameras. But that's just a guess.

I hesitate between APUTURE 300x and the amaran 300c model that you have just presented and for the final word you rather recommend the 200x in your video
could you give me your opinion please in order to make a good choice knowing that it is strongly recommended to use two-color LEDs despite the loss of power we gain in versatility
Thanks for your feedback
The Amaran lights are plastic, very different from the Aputure 1200. So the first question you need to answer for yourself is how important to you is build quality and durability? Do you need RGB? Not knowing the answer to these questions I cannot say. But for me, if I work regularly on location and not having a need for RGB, I would opt for the Aputure 300x.
@@curtisjudd thank you
The 150c & 300c have +/- G/M this makes them more accurate as far a color reproduction and ability to match the room environment.
Mmm, depends on if you’re willing to push higher ISOs on your camera, but I generally would not consider the 200x S as enough for book lighting.
@@curtisjudd That’s what I suspected. Guessing I need a 600W plus fixture for that. Thanks.
@@rickymcc9072 For book lighting? 2 could probably work, but again, may need to push higher ISOs to get where you need in terms of exposure.
Hey, thanks for the great video. I noticed in the comments that you said you'd take the 150C over the Nanlite Forza 60C. I was was wondering if you could elaborate on why you'd prefer the Amaran?
More output and a Bowen’s Mount built-in (no need for adapters).
Most LED fixtures are rated at around 10,000 hours. I haven’t gotten there yet!
the 150c and 300c are both more durableand made of stronger materials than the 200x though. the yoke is metal and the bowen's mount is much stronger than the 200x

What are you using as your main light in this video? I just bought the 300c for 380, I'm finally upgrading from Godox lol
Nice video! Can decide for RUclips beauty videos better 60 x s or 150 c ? You sound so good what do you used fur sound ?
For skin tones, 60x S. For effects, 150c. Audio gear is listed in the description 👍
A question. If i have a heavy softbox like lightdome 150, then how can i attach it directly to stand and then attach plastic light like 200x with it. Is there any other adapter i need to attach softbox to stand directly ?
they look pretty nice to be honest, how do you get the white version ? looks very nice 😂
That was an engineering prototype, I'm told.
How do you mount a softbox on a lightstand as you recommend for big light modifiers?
I use a jaw vice grip to hold on to the outer edge of the soft box's ring and then attach the light to the Bowens mount. Here are several jaw vice grip examples bhpho.to/3rNnLSZ

I have the questions:
1. What the brightness at 1% in lux in compare 150c / 300c
2. What the mic did you use in this video?
Thanks for the questions. 1) not sure, will need to measure. What color are you looking for the lux measurement on? 2) Microphone is the Sennheiser MKH8050 (link in description)
@@curtisjudd 1) 5600k
2) thank you for reply!

Would love to hear opinions, I’m thinking of sending the 60 x s back
If I didn't already have a bi-color light like the 60x, that would be my first buy. Then add an RGB light later.
I have sent a detailed test video with Canon R5 to Aputure, but they replied that due to the large number of camera models, there is no guarantee that there will be no flickering problems when taking pictures with the camera, including Canon R5 & R6
Amaran 150C and 300c are indeed very attractive, very light in weight, but we are worried about flickering, which limits some shooting methods. For example, some cameras need to use electronic shutter for high-speed continuous shooting.
Are you referring to still photography or high speed video?
Also, I suspect it will depend on the dimmer setting.
@@curtisjudd I use it for portrait photography, aerial yoga shooting, sports photography, etc.
Because aerial yoga requires extremely high-speed continuous shooting, so I chose to use leds
I don't know if high speed video also has flickering problem, I only have Canon R5 and R series cameras
@@curtisjudd I also own 8 pieces of Nanlite led lights, and there has been no flickering problem in the previous shooting, and I have used different outputs
I have tested the LED of my own Aputure Amaran, the electronic shutter will flicker at 1/250s in the worst case,
Aputure Amaran F22C will flicker in any situation, even with full power
There is no problem when Aputure Amaran 200D only has full power, but there will be flickering at 50%
But Nanlite 15c, 30c, 30x have no flickering problem in the 1/1000s electronic shutter in the test, even if it is not using full power,
There will be flickering problem at 1/8000s electronic shutter
@@curtisjudd So would you mind to test, will Aputure Amaran 300C appear flickering stripes when taking pictures with electronic shutter?
For example, test 1/500s, 1/1000s shutter, Aputure Amaran 300C output 25, 50 or 100%🙏🙏
How does the 300c compare to something like an Aputure 300x in terms of light output? Which one is brighter?
300x no doubt about it. RGB lights are always less powerful than bi-color or daylight equivalent wattages
Agreed with Charles. RGB lights always put out less light because they have to spread that 300W out across several different colored LEDs.
@@AllTheBeef thank you for the insight, wanting to make sure my money is going to the right place!
@@curtisjudd thank you, this is extremely helpful for my next purchase!
What do you think about the Amaran 300c vs the Godox SZ150R?
I wanna buy a Aputure 300x for my main light, and two other lights for filling and effects, but i can´t decide between those 2 models, i watched both your videos (this one and the Godox Sz150) and still can't decide.
Any advice you can give me will be well received
They’re pretty similar though from memory, I think the Amaran puts out more light which makes it a bit more versatile.
Curious to know why you use the key lights at 3200k instead of 5600k-5900k? Genuine question, I've never thought to do this, wasn't sure if there was a benefit for it.
At 3200, most LED lights perform better in terms of color accuracy.
@@curtisjudd wow, great to know!! Thanks!
The Sidus Link app will control these lights, yes. Not sure what Sidus Links Magic Program Pro is?
It’s the integration in the Sidus app where you can trigger the lights on a timeline with nodes to create flows or fades with several lights. Not as versatile as DMX, but still extremely handy to control Bluetooth enabled lights like that. Sadly not all lights are supported that’s why I ask… when you’re in a scene/group of lights in Sidus link it’s the earth like button in the middle of the bottom menu. When the lights are greyed out they’re not (yet) supported. Do you think you could check?
What do you think about the Amaran 300 c vs the Godox SZ 300 R ?
Haven't used the Godox, but Godox has really improved the quality of their lights in the last several years.
Ugh! I just bought the Forza version of this package earlier today. At least it was on sale.

Thanks, as always, for the fantastic video. Out of curiosity, why does no one ever use umbrellas for video? This has built in umbrella mount.
@@iamnotapoet Which stereo body pack recorders are you referring to specifically, please?
