  • A very basic intro to installing the NVMe Base under a Raspberry Pi 5.
    shop.pimoroni.com/products/nv...
Make sure your eeprom firmware is up to date with the 2023-12-06 or later version. Software update on the RPi OS should do this for you, but you can force it by running 'sudo rpi-eeprom-update' in the Terminal.
If you want to try PCIe Gen 3 speeds you can add this line to the [all] section of your /boot/config.txt
    [all]
    dtparam=pciex1_gen=3
If you have updated your firmware and want to boot from the NVMe drive, you might have to get technical and run 'sudo rpi-eeprom-config --edit' from the Terminal and change the BOOT_ORDER to be 0x416 instead of 0x41.

Got mine on Friday, thanks guys. I almost waited until I had some free time on Saturday, but decided to throw caution to the wind and dive in. Twenty (20) minutes later, I was booting my 1 Tb (Sabrent Rocket) NVMe drive in PCIe gen3 mode. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Great product. Can't wait for a (non-printed) case that supports this config. Thanks.

Great Product! I used it with my Pi 5 and the Waveshare POE Hat and it works like a charm so far!
I used the included long screws to screw it from the bottom to the HAT and it worked perfectly, thanks for including them :)! Beste combo ever, 22€~ including shipping is a good deal in my opinion, would gladly buy it again! FYI who was wondering: i installed Raspi OS via Raspi Imager on the nvme ssd directly using a m.2 usb-c dongle. Then the first boot didnt work for me, but the second automagically did! (Dont put a SD card in, or the pi will boot into the SD Card first, leave it empty and the nvme will follow in the boot order).

Got mine a few days ago and purchased a Sabrent 500GB Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280. When running in PCIe 3, do we not have to worry about heat?
I have not tested the temps on the drive yet, but would like to install a heatsink on the NVME drive nonetheless.
The standoffs and NVMe screw are too short to allow a heatsink to be installed.

For me, the variant from Pineberry is better. With the pineberry "HAT" bottom you can also use other M.2 M-Key devices. This would not work here when assembled because of the space. But I am pleased that there are now so many variants and I hope there will be many more for the Pi 5.

Can you confirm the 'PCIe Pipe' Flat Flex Cable' can remain connected while the SD HC card is inserted and removed?

In my experience putting the flat cable onto the pi first and then trying to do the base end with a pi dangling off it was an exercise in frustration and futility. The base end is much harder to do, so you're better off doing that first and then the pi. That's how it was for me.

I have one of my Pi5 boards running as a plex server, it’s fine for one 4K stream, but can do a couple of 1080p, I work away a lot and normally take a pi with me to hook up to the hotel tv.
I was doing some tests over the holidays with the Flirc case and it’s not good enough as the pi gets to throttle at 80c, but the active cooler in the official case keeps it much cooler and runs fine.

Would prefer a text + picture installation manual. Skipping videos back and forth is not the best way of instructing. besides that, the board is very cool! Thanks!

Any resellers in India? It is sad to see none of there gadgets are available in India. And international shipping is very expensive. Please let me know if there is a way I could purchase this in India without spending too much on shipping charges.

Thats cool and all, but what we need is a 4 sata and 1 msata board. 1 msata for system and 4 sata for nas drives. Maybe 1x gen2 pcie is just too slow idk, system should be fine on a high quality sd.

You can try a nvme hat + a nvme to sata controller board with multiple sata connectors. I will try this setup soon

      the pi5 pcie can do pcie 3.0 x1 speeds. ~ 900 Mb/s
I think that's enough for a few SATA devices. There are M.2 M-Key SATA controllers that should work for this. Make sure that it is either the "Jbm585" or "Asmedia1166". These are SATA controllers with 5 or 6 SATA ports. There are also some that only have a SATA splitter instead of a controller.
My Pineberry HAT Bottom will arrive in 2 days, I will need a few more parts and will test it then.

Why do you keep referring to screws as bolts, I noticed you even occasionally refer to the screw as a nut.

No, screw is British for screw.

Screws have pointed tips (like wood screws), bolts are flat (like an m3 bolt).

Machine screws don't have pointed tips.

The only place I hear him use the term nut is when he is actually using nuts.
Machine screw vs bolt seems to be something where there is disagreement. AIUI the traditional definition is that a screw is something you screw into a hole (a threaded hole in the case of a machine screw), while a bolt is something you put a nut on.
But especially with small hardware, the same fastener can be used both ways. So you often have situations where the manufacturer sells something as a screw but you are using it as a bolt, or situations where the manufacturer sells something as a bolt but you are using it as a screw.
