I burn my shed hair. It's definitely something passed down by my Blackfoot NA great-great grandma. My great grandma was OBSESSED with not throwing away shed hair. And I keep the tradition alive for the next generation. ❤❤❤
@@bettynevels1669 oh wow!!! People think I'm the typical "I got Indian in my family" that some Black people are known for when I say that but on both sides of my family there's actually substantial Native American heritage. I specifically know about the Blackfoot because it's part of the family history on my maternal side, which is where the hair burning comes from. I'm not sure on my paternal side but the DNA testing they had done shows my family has NA heritage on that side as well. It definitely explains my hair lol. It's more wavy than curly.
Just a couple weeks ago, I threw away a years worth of my shed hair; now that I’m taking better care of my hair, I was collecting it to track how much shed hair I lose each month. But I wanted to tidy up my closet, so I trashed it. But it was so hard - seeing my hair in the trash made me want to cry. It felt like I was wasting a piece of me. This video makes me happy - it has given me justification to not be so quick to throw it away in the future (and that I’m not crazy for wanting to keep my hair, lol). Thank you for this! 😊
Living on my own, composting food & plant remnants, adding my shed hair to the mix just somehow feels natural & instinctive in the cycle of life. Your video and comments made me smile so big to know that other people do this too 🥰
My mom burned her shedded hair also. I remember as a young girl thinking that was odd. I actually never followed that practice but now after seeing your video I actually agree that our hair is a part of our spiritual self. A great video 💜
Oh my goodness. I am the same way. I have a bag of shed hair in my closet. I even keep my child's shed hair in a separate bag cuz its fascinating to me. Their hair is a completely different color than mine. I plan on making a clip or hair piece/wig with it one day. That way it will match my hair color and texture perfectly, no need to blend. That's what women did in ancient and Victorian days. They made custom wigs from their cut/shed hair.
I think that’s brilliant to use your own shed hair hair pieces and custom wigs. You’ll never have an issue with blending or have to deal with harmful chemicals 🙌🏾
I want to try to make a puff with it since fake puff never look like /blend well my real hair and I want to try. Did somone know how I can do that with my shed hair ?
Wow, I remember my mom saved me and my siblings hair when we were kids. As an adult, I have never saved cut or shed hair, I just threw it away in the trash. But after watching this video and reading all the comments, I will start saving my shed hair to put in my plants. This was such an informative video, Thanks Green Beauty!
You know that is interesting that when I used to go to the beauty salon and had a hair cut or a hair trim, I remember just here surrounding my chair on the floor and sometimes I was asked if I wanted to keep the hair and I was thinking now why would I want to do that? And then I'd watch The Little Helper sweep it up and throw it in the trash. So I guess hairstyle is new that some of us have feelings about hair and would not want to just leave it there would want to dispose of it in the way that we felt best
You are just soooooo amazing !!! Thanks for this .. jusy recently i realised how important and serious hair is from studying the Bible ... ive been praying about it. ..this is confirmation on this journey of mine .. blessings
I sometimes cut up my shed hair, and put it in the soil of my house plants. I learned my hair is high in nitrogen, and this is slowly released to the plant when it is in the soil. Hair as a top layer on the soil, can deter pests. Hair can help to give soil a sturdy matrix which may be useful for supporting roots. Plus, hair is rich in nitrogen which makes it ideal for composting and treating plants with. I just cut my shed hair up, in small pieces, then mix it with my plant soil before inserting the roots of the plant in the soil. I learned how to do this from Pinterest years ago. My house plants have lived, and done better after putting my shed hair in their soil.🪴🎍❤😊
Yes I'm african american from the south east. I follow this tradition of keeping hair safe then burning with herbs and oils with certain energies. My aunt told me about it and how the family elders used to do it. I started doing it as well when i became an adult. I've only heard of enemies burying shed hair with charms to do harm although I understand your approach.
That’s really cool to know. I have actually been saving all of my hair since since 2017 and I have my hair from my big chop back in 2014. I have it put away in little sandwiches bags dated for the year and month for which I lost that hair. So all in all I have 8 years worth of my hair put away. I started doing this so that I could visually see how much hair I was shedding from month to month. And as I am changing my hair and food regimens I can see what’s affecting me the most.
i love that! can i ask how you store all the bags?? also, if you like doing rituals you can use hair from a particular time to call back parts of yourself or a certain feeling/energy from that time :)
@@marianav9655 I have the hair that I lose per month in a mini sandwich bag marked with the month and year. I then put all of the bags for that year into a small/medium size cloth bag and tie it up and put them in a drawer. One thing that I have been experiencing is that over time air will fill back up into the sandwich bags. So Im going to put the bags from each year into a vacuum seal bag. That way I will be able to stack them. The draw that I currently have them in is getting full. So I will have to make this change this year. Hope that helps. And your idea about using the hair to recall moments and feelings is pretty cool. In 2022 I started taking my journaling to the next level where I tracked my daily actions and emotions throughout the day in sections (morning, noon, and night) in a custom spreadsheet. It has been an amazing experience to be able to look back on my year based on the day and time. It really helps with recall. And it only takes me a few mins a day to do it.
@@TriggaTreDay wow i absolutely love this system!!! i also save my sheds and cuts, but it's usually in one big cloth bag. i have saved some cuts from particular times when i felt it was relevant to use in ritual, but i haven't been nearly as organized and sometimes i wished i had labelled it better and/or separated hair from other times i only realized were relevant until after the fact. thanks for sharing, i loved your system and i will start doing something similar! 😊💕🙌🏽
@@marianav9655 Im glad to hear that its something you would like to do. I have put so much work into perfecting what I am doing, Im happy to see that others like it. One more thing. I use to write all of my notes on a card and would store it with the hair, but in 2023 I made a personal hair tracker where I now document everything that I do to my hair and all of my product recipes. So if I have a wash day, I know the date and time of the wash, what products I used, if I did a full wash or just a co-wash, and what style I did to my hair. And then I add any extra notes. the last several years i did not feel comfortable throwing out my hair anywhere someone else could get it. i used to just throw away my hair at home, but still it didn't feel right to me. i don't think we are allowed to put hair in our public composting program and I do not have a personal compost. in future i may burn my hair. i don't have land where i can bury it and feel safe.
Grew up with always burning your hair, never flushing or putting it the garbage can. Then, I got away from it over the past 10 years. Another thing was after doing your hair or someone else's, you would say, "mo hair", the old folks shortened version of "more hair." It's amazing how these traditions were passed down from our ancestors. We had very few hair products available and definitely not many to cater to our different textures, but our hair grew. 😮😊
Wow, this is so interesting! I have never gave my hair such a spiritual value, for me it was just hair. But after watching your video I might start seeing it from a different viewpoint!

Thank you so much for these tips because I was thinking of starting my first try at gardening and now I know what to do with my shed hair. Thank you Queen ❤
I like to collect my hair after styling to compare it how much hair I’m shedding even in the salon because I live in Tanzania people aren’t like questioning me they think I’m collecting it because of spiritual reasons they sometimes even help me. While I just wanna see how much hair I’m losing. 😂😂 end of the day I throw it in the toilet at home but these days I’ve opted for burning because I’m still African and I believe hair carries energy because my mom always tells me don’t go to to just anyone do your hair
OMG!!!! You saying this reminded me so much of when I was a young girl growing up in Jamaica after getting my hair combed, my mother would burn any shed hairs. And although, I haven't practiced that in my adult life, this makes sense why I always felt weird about throwing away mine or my children's hair. Now this has jogged my memory, I think I will return to that practice or even bury it which seems much safer if I wanna get the kids involved
That’s why I would never wear another person’s hair on my head. There’s lots of weird things don’t go on with hair trade around the world. Some people have their hair stolen and sold so it’s not a good idea overall.

Same. I would never let my hair get loose because of bird nests, root work or some other things, I always take my hair home with me if I happened to pull some strands etc. I’d never heard the burn or bury part or perhaps I just didn’t remember. I happened to save a pile of hair from my last detangling session. Idk what I planned to do with it but now perhaps I’ll try mixing it in with my plant soil or with a smudge stick.
Yup! My Aunt born in the 1940s told us this. I saw her collecting my cousin’s hair and it’s what she taught me. Because my mother never believed or remembered the practice, I never did this growing up or now.
I am a big believer of protecting my energy, especially when it comes to my natural hair. Leaned into this recently as I found a new hair-stylist after 15 years with the same stylist. I meditate often - so when my spirit guides tells me to move on, I listen...
Am very thankful for remembering the name of your channel and once I figured it out you’re talking about what I didn’t recognize as to why I don’t throw away my hair unknowingly i Guess the spirit was trying to tell me how sacred it is.
😲 Welllllllll...Damnnnnnnnnn!!! I've Always Heard Of Burning The Hair, But I Have Never Heard Of Burying It In The Ground Or Using It As Compost!!! Very Interesting Methods Of Transferring Energy! 🤜🏿👑🤛🏿
Oh wow... I appreciate you so much for educating me!!! The information you shared actually touched me...I felt like ancestral knowledge was given. Could tell me the brand of your compost bin?
I definitely grew up be told to be careful with my hair and who touched it and what to do with it . That’s cool that you bury it . Pretty cool . Thanks for sharing .
I think some of these people years back were thinking voodoo, that someone might try to harm you by having a piece of your hair or at least I saw that kind of stuff in movies
My mom at one point had put her waist length hair in one braid and then she cut it and she never threw it away, she just put that braided cut piece in a dresser drawer and I never saw her do that again. She also never went to beauty salons and She never taught me to do anything special with my shed hair. When she passed away I just happened to find that cut braid and I'm so happy that I have it because it makes me feel close to her when I need to through hard times.😍
What if you can't bury it because of the apartment complex doesn't have grass? Then what do you do? Everyone and y'all's family have a blessed New Year and a blessed day. Y'all always stay blessed and healthy ✝️🙏🛐🕊️
This was a very fantastic video to watch, and some interesting comments to read. I'm so happy to see i have fewer shedded hair, as I am moisturizing my hair more often. But to save my hair?? Too spooky for me. I have no use for it, anyways.
I did keep my shed hair intuitively (i honestly dont know why i did it) but after some time i started getting embarrassed and gaslit myself that i was operating on a scarcity mindset because i couldn't let it go so i threw it all away.😩going to start again
Sometimes we do things b/c our body/ancestors/spirit (whatever you call it) is trying to tell us something. I’m glad this video reminded you not to ever second guess you reflexes. 💚💚
In Jamaica 🇯🇲 we put the shed hairs in the heart ❤️ of the young banana plant 🌱 to 1. As an offering for a good harvest and 2 In return the plant send messages to our ancestors to make our hair grow long and thick.
Thank you, I think I'll start saving more of my shed hair now! Lately I've been feeling uneasy whenever I threw it away, like squandering an achievement? Just a vague uneasy feeling of waste. Now I'll start saving more and use it when I plant in my yard!
Happy new year! All of this is very interesting especially the first comment I read. I can't keep a plant alive so maybe I should try this. Currently, and don't laugh, I took my shed hair into an empty toilet paper roll and fold it over at each end and then put it in a grocery store bag and then tie that and put it in the trash. Is that a bad idea?😥
How do y'all feel about giving it to birds as an offering to make their nests ? 😂 (I live in the country on a big land, so I put it outside for them to find, usually what comes out of my brush) my friend gave me the idea earlier this year.
There’s some negative superstitions about that in some parts of the world but, I personally don’t see anything wrong with it. I think it’s a great idea.
Very interesting ! I just always throw it away mine 😭 but I want to try to make a puff with it ! And since fake puff never look like my hair/ blend well with my real hair and I just want to try. Did somone know how I can do that with my shed hair ?
I was about to ask you how to do that and my first question was going to be how do you detangle it and then line it up so that you can attach it to a thread or glue all of the ends together and then attached to threading and then put Clips on it so that you can attach it as a puff
We call me Just As Clueless As The Question Mark Itself😮😂. I just throw it away I will start my garden soon like I said and from now on, will put it in my compost ❤Black Love❤

You can shave your head and start over but, nothing is going to change if you don’t honestly identify what the root issue is. From what you described, it sounds like an internal issue. Take a critical look at what your eating. And consider adapting to a lifestyle change. Also visit a doctor and get a full check up. If you have more specific health concerns, visit a specialist like an endocrinologist. Invest in yourself and your hair, scalp, skin and whole body will show it. 💚
@@jouny8877I had a very similar situation. I went to a dermatologist that specializes in scalp disorder. She prescribed me a cream that didn't smell and I only had to use it once a day for a couple of weeks. It stopped the inflammation and itching tremendously.
Deffo get the blood test like others have mentioned, but it may also be to do with your hair routine. I've heard of people having split ends all the way up their strands from the no oil or butter method (Jenn Jackson has videos on it) are you following that method?
Thank you for bringing back a memory. My great grandmother used to burn our shed hair when I was little. I used to burn mine and the kids hair when they were small. Then I started wrapping it up and flushing it down the toilet. Starting today, I’m going to go back to burning it or burying it . I now remember why elders had this ritual.
That was a thing back in the day but it was like you did not want your hair to get into the wrong hands or something like it made you vulnerable. It weird to hear something that was a concern back when I was growing up in Georgia in the 60s-70s from the elders. Thanks for sharing and blessings to you and all in the days to come.

Strange. Maybe this is where the saying your
"hair looks like a birds nest " comes from.
I was thought that about birds by a Rastafarian in Jamaican. It’s interesting how connected the culture of us indigenous people is
How interesting!

I thought I was the only one. Can’t wait
You’re definitely not the only one. I suspect there’s a lot of us out there
I am a big believer of protecting my energy, especially when it comes to my natural hair.
Yes indeed, our hair is very sacred
😲 Welllllllll...Damnnnnnnnnn!!!
I've Always Heard Of Burning The Hair, But I Have Never Heard Of Burying It In The Ground Or Using It As Compost!!!
Very Interesting Methods Of Transferring Energy! 🤜🏿👑🤛🏿
My grandmother told me not to throw away my hair, and she said to burn or flush it.... I sometimes add it to soil..Watching from antigua 🇦🇬
Flushing it might not be good for your plumbing. 💡
I would 100% consider it now that I’ve watched this video. What an amazing thing to learn today. Thank you from my whole heart!!! ❤❤❤
That’s great !!! I’m so happy. I hope your hair loves it 💚💚
Iam so so glad that I am not the only one putting my sheds in soil garden instead of the trash. I love my hair and I want to keep them close by.
I’m gonna be more mindful of what I do with my shed hair, this is a beautiful thing
Thanks for this! I found out last year that your hair in the garden keeps the groundhogs away, so I started saving up.
Oh wow... I appreciate you so much for educating me!!! The information you shared actually touched me...I felt like ancestral knowledge was given.
Could tell me the brand of your compost bin?
Thanks 🙏🏿 it’s called a MAZE Two Stage 65 gal Compost Tumbler. I got it from Amazon. So far, so good.
Wow. This is powerful. Thank you for making this video
There is definitely something in this. I cant throw my hair out with the rubbish. This has definitely given me some ideas.
Hair is GREAT for composting!
Your words are new to my ears. 😊
I'm with you.
My Jamaican family butn it and scatter the ashes in the yard.
Now living abroad, I burn it and put the ash in my house plants.
I actually had a ziplick bag of my shed hairs, my son, and niece shed hairs and burned it on New Year Eve before the new year of 2024.
That’s really nice
My mom at one point had put her waist length hair in one braid and then she cut it and she never threw it away, she just put that braided cut piece in a dresser drawer and I never saw her do that again. She also never went to beauty salons and She never taught me to do anything special with my shed hair. When she passed away I just happened to find that cut braid and I'm so happy that I have it because it makes me feel close to her when I need to through hard times.😍
@@sable7114 Sorry for your loss
@@sable7114that is so beautiful. So interesting what hair can represent. You will have a physical piece of her for the rest of your life 💚💚💚
@@GreenBeauty yes I will, and thank you so much. I wonder if she did that especially for me
My grandmother burned her shed hair. Thank you for sharing this video. ❤
Yes, grew up burning my shed hair. My mother and grandmother taught me. It’s apart of our hoodoo practices ❤
I remember as a child my grandmother would always burn our shed hair. Something I had stop doing. I’ll going back to my roots ❤
This is beautiful. I garden as well so I'll definitely be doing this
I collect my hair since 2016. I have jars of the hair. I have the hair i had when i big chopped too. It still brings memories when i look at it.
It was traditional when I was growing up to burn your hair. We were told that if the birds got it, we would get a headache 😂. By the way, I'm 69.
😂 I was told if the birds got it, you would go crazy!😂
Yep! It's the headache in my family too!
...Or you'd be driven insane.
Now am going to save my shade hair and for my daughters.
It just feels so wrong throwing my hair away. I'm going to have to rethink this.
What if you can't bury it because of the apartment complex doesn't have grass? Then what do you do? Everyone and y'all's family have a blessed New Year and a blessed day. Y'all always stay blessed and healthy ✝️🙏🛐🕊️
Very interesting! I’d consider incorporating this into my lifestyle.
Same with me.
Sometimes we do things b/c our body/ancestors/spirit (whatever you call it) is trying to tell us something. I’m glad this video reminded you not to ever second guess you reflexes. 💚💚
@@GreenBeauty building on that self-trust from now on. Thank you for making this video.
LOVE THIS & THANKS FOR SHARING ❤
In Jamaica 🇯🇲 we put the shed hairs in the heart ❤️ of the young banana plant 🌱 to 1. As an offering for a good harvest and 2 In return the plant send messages to our ancestors to make our hair grow long and thick.
Well done!
Thank you
That's beautiful. 💚
My grandmother would burn her hair because if a bird made a nest with it she would get a headache
Interesting indeed
Doing this from now on. Thank you!
Wow … I now feel led to keep my shed hair.
Where did you get your compost? Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, I think I'll start saving more of my shed hair now! Lately I've been feeling uneasy whenever I threw it away, like squandering an achievement? Just a vague uneasy feeling of waste.
Now I'll start saving more and use it when I plant in my yard!
Beautiful.. I will begin to add it to my soil
Of you have a garden, your plants and trees will love it. Hair is a great Nitrogen boost.
Wow that is so beautiful 😊
I use to burn my shed hair and put the ashes in an ointment that i use to grow my hair...that's when i was a teenager. it work for me then..
That’s a GREAT idea. Ask is really good for your hair.
Interesting. Where did you get that idea
@@sable7114 from My mum .. she has long hair ..so i trusted her
Happy new year!
No. It's what my mother taught me, and I still do.
I can't stand the smell of burning hair.
Many years ago, my 80 year old aunt would always burn her hair that was left over from her brush or comb. I can now understand why
Im going to keep my aged hair to create hair nests to give my buns some bulk when I do vintage hairstyles
I live at an apartment complex where I can't bury or possibly burn the shed hair. What else do you recommend?
My great-grandmother would keep her hair in a bag.
She Indian and Irish.
I have a houseplant that still has my shed hair wrapped around it's roots.
I wanna use my shed hair to make a wig or use is an attachment to protect my hair. Or a garden.
That’s a great idea
@@GreenBeauty 🙂
Has an Jamaican we have always put our shed hair at the roots of our plants
My mom used to burn hers 👵🏽 💜
Wise Mom 💚
@@GreenBeauty ☺️🥰..Indeed
I love ❤️ your videos sis
What hair products do you use?
My hair is split to the scalp and I have severe itching. I used onion water and it did not help. It is frizzy and its color is faded. Do you advise me to shave it off and start my journey again?

You can shave your head and start over but, nothing is going to change if you don’t honestly identify what the root issue is. From what you described, it sounds like an internal issue. Take a critical look at what your eating. And consider adapting to a lifestyle change. Also visit a doctor and get a full check up. If you have more specific health concerns, visit a specialist like an endocrinologist. Invest in yourself and your hair, scalp, skin and whole body will show it. 💚
Shave, get a blood test for vitamin deficiency, and also look into the products you're using as they can be aggravating your scalp
Can you do a video on Dr.Bonners soap. I use that on my hair
I started saving mine last year. I am going to bury it next to the trees in my yard.
