Historic accuracy is important because passive audiences will mistake fiction for fact. That said, some MINOR artistic license is acceptable to make the story more entertaining

You know, it's kinda tragic how when they're going over Ridley Scott's career they're just casually skipping over The Duellists. You know... his first ever movie, and probably the best movie to ever capture the spirit of the Napoleonic era ever made...

The movie 'The King' is closer to propaganda than a historical film. The depiction of the Battle of Agincourt is very different from what actually happened. The movie shows a battle in the mud where the English charge the French. Historically, the outnumbered English used longbows to defeat the French. Additionally, the French were not accurately depicted; they were not arrogant or unaware as the movie suggests. As for Henry V, he is depicted as being reluctant to go to war and seeking to avoid conflict with France, which strongly contrasts with historical facts. Henry V is widely recognized as a bellicose king who personally initiated the war with France

Agree 100% on your comments about Braveheart and Patriot. The only reference I’ve found for Napoleon actually drawing his sword and having to fight it out was in the book Anatomy of Glory. In one of the last battles before the first abdication, a group of Cossacks launched a surprise attack and were only stopped when Units of the Imperial Guard intervened. It happened so fast a number of senior officers including Napoleon were caught out and actually had to draw swords to defend themselves.

The Egyptian shot on the pyramids just rubbed me the wrong way. To this day people believe Napoleon is blamed for the Sphinx missing his nose or stealing the mona lisa. Both are complete fabrications. For a movie, to have some deviations is normal, especially given the timeline. But you can't (like this seems to be) be giving life to these fabrications. Other than that... Why not. This looks pretty epic.

I really disagree that you can't be historically accurate and highly entertaining. Of course you don't show the boring 4 hour build up. But you also don't need Napoleon as part of a charge. Achieving accuracy and great entertainment value is absolutely achievable, it just takes some creativity. Realism can be more suspenseful, because it immerses the audience more and puts them in the scene. A man struggling in a prolonged retreat, desperately trying to scavenge for food, evading pursuers, etc. could be a highly engrossing scene, as opposed to a hero chopping down dozens of enemies while delivering speeches.

Of all the $hitty movies that have surfaced probably in the last decade this looks excellent. And truthfully, the only decent movies I can think of that have come out have happened to be historically based films; dunkirk, the revenant , all quiet on the western front, the dig, 1917 and I’d have to think really hard for much else

One of the problems of this movie is that it contains many historical mistakes ( it was already the same with "Kingdom of Heaven" which was historicaly a series of lies) and also that Phoenix looks as much like Napoleon as myself I look like Mahatma Gandhi!
Certainly we have known much worse here in France: Pierre Mondy, Daniel Gélin, or the grotesque Christian Clavier: it was a disaster! Why not Rowan Atkinson in the role ?
Or Silvester Stallone ? Or John Wayne ? (ok he is dead).
I found Rod Steiger one of the most convincing, physically speaking, because for the rest he often does tons of it by portraying us as an almost Shakespearian Napoleon, in Bondarchouk's "Waterloo", a film nonetheless full of historical blunders (ah those cannonballs that explode like shells!). It really appears that many drectors think that a cocked hat on an actor's head is enough to make him a Napoleon...!

I wonder if the Battle of Trefalgar is going to get at least a shout out? Or the U.S., (the Louisiana Purchase), or Mexico, or even Beethoven for that matter? Or the Napoleonic Code?
The Legion d' honneur I find fascinating as well. It is an award given to people for their achievements in many fields. And women were never excluded from receiving it. All that kind of stuff rounds out the reason why we still are interested in Napoleon today.
That's the problem I have when the subject of Napoleon or the Napoleonic Era comes up. It's all so very dense in historic importance on so many levels involving multi countries, cultural changes, fortunes of countries, clothing, food, music. Every 5 minutes something happens that is significant to the world even today.
I suppose I'm in the minority when it comes to caring about these long lasting effects of Napoleon's reign. I suspect of any of the events I brought up, only the Battle of Trafalgar has a chance of being discussed or depicted.
I also suspect that History Buffs is going to have a field day with this movie. I would bet he'll wait to see the 4 hour Director's cut before he rips it apart. I just hope he doesn't spend 30 minutes just talking about uniforms.

Next step the blue hair? The good detail is the ribbon around her neck, because she’s a widow from the guillotine, Alexandre De Beauharnais give her his "title" by his head. The ribbon was mean she was a widow of victim of terror, during the directoire. 6:00 he lead the artillery, he was brain, not muscle, this is not game of throne! 7:43 Never, NEVER! all egyptology came from this campaign, there was war on the otherside, but this is a true frontal insult from dummies. This one deserve a big slap to anglo-saxon retard ignorent faces, like minus 20 IQ points and nose bleeding. 8:34 Talleyrand! You can do an hollywood trilogy on him too! 8:39 the 18 brumaire coup d’état wasn’t so easy, Lucien Bonaparte, the little brother was the hero this day. 9:17 ok, you seem to know history, each time you repeat my comment. You obviously have the knowledge. I don’t know how many of his book was translate in english, but you have to read Jean Tulard. 18:48 the manage of spain matter is his true mistake, what a mess! Only a German film production company can make seemingly accurate films about something that happened with the Germans in WW2. "The Train, 1963 is an exception.

you say that Napoleon did not charge as a cavalryman at the head of his troops...well that's not true! it's very well told by many soldiers during the battle of Lonato on 3 August 1796.
Regarding exploits in bed! Josephine used to say bad things about Napoleon, especially after he married Maris Louise of Austria! don't forget that it is women who made history in beds! reading between the lines is a necessity!
and I'm also sorry here, but words matter, the guard didn't run away at Waterloo, she retreated in front of the devastating fire from the oponant, it's not the same! in the end it formed in a square until it was totally annihilated, "the guard dies but does not surrender"! on the other hand it is true that the rest of the army was put to flight by the arrival of the Prussians.
