Historic accuracy is important because passive audiences will mistake fiction for fact. That said, some MINOR artistic license is acceptable to make the story more entertaining
You know, it's kinda tragic how when they're going over Ridley Scott's career they're just casually skipping over The Duellists. You know... his first ever movie, and probably the best movie to ever capture the spirit of the Napoleonic era ever made...
At last, someone gave Scott credit for the Duelist. A great film early in his career. Great actors, Director, costumes, locations, story. I was amazed to learn it was a true story about two French officers that fought a series of duels for years..
The movie 'The King' is closer to propaganda than a historical film. The depiction of the Battle of Agincourt is very different from what actually happened. The movie shows a battle in the mud where the English charge the French. Historically, the outnumbered English used longbows to defeat the French. Additionally, the French were not accurately depicted; they were not arrogant or unaware as the movie suggests. As for Henry V, he is depicted as being reluctant to go to war and seeking to avoid conflict with France, which strongly contrasts with historical facts. Henry V is widely recognized as a bellicose king who personally initiated the war with France
Agree 100% on your comments about Braveheart and Patriot. The only reference I’ve found for Napoleon actually drawing his sword and having to fight it out was in the book Anatomy of Glory. In one of the last battles before the first abdication, a group of Cossacks launched a surprise attack and were only stopped when Units of the Imperial Guard intervened. It happened so fast a number of senior officers including Napoleon were caught out and actually had to draw swords to defend themselves.
I would think hypothermia probably set in for a number of those poor souls falling through the ice after coming out. Usually it's the elements and disease that took most soldiers back then.
The Egyptian shot on the pyramids just rubbed me the wrong way. To this day people believe Napoleon is blamed for the Sphinx missing his nose or stealing the mona lisa. Both are complete fabrications. For a movie, to have some deviations is normal, especially given the timeline. But you can't (like this seems to be) be giving life to these fabrications. Other than that... Why not. This looks pretty epic.
That's the French with their backs to the pyramids. They weren't shooting at them. They did fight in view of them, but probably not that close. (Visual effect for the movie, I guess.)
One notable example of his personal involvement in a cavalry charge is the Battle of Eylau in 1807. During this battle, Napoleon led his cavalry against Russian forces. His courageous and resolute presence on the battlefield was a characteristic feature of his leadership.
I really disagree that you can't be historically accurate and highly entertaining. Of course you don't show the boring 4 hour build up. But you also don't need Napoleon as part of a charge. Achieving accuracy and great entertainment value is absolutely achievable, it just takes some creativity. Realism can be more suspenseful, because it immerses the audience more and puts them in the scene. A man struggling in a prolonged retreat, desperately trying to scavenge for food, evading pursuers, etc. could be a highly engrossing scene, as opposed to a hero chopping down dozens of enemies while delivering speeches.
The previous person commented about one of Ridley Scotts early movies about the era. The Duelist is a great story, actors, Director, costumes and locations. Amazing, its the true story about two French officers that fought a series of duels for years.

I saw this movie. DISAPPOINTED ! I did NOT get the impression he was a GREAT general.. no planning scenes, no strategy discussions..fail, fail, fail. I would not have picked this actor if as you say he was in his EARLY 20's. They made him out to be a bit of a crazy person. I was wholly and totally disappointed in the movie.
Worst prequel ever, from what I can see in this trailer... The main character is older, his character development's been reset, and we don't even have an explanation why his last name is now Bonaparte, not Dynamite.... (sarcasm, by the way)
Because of the people he killed many of them were armed and they were actively trying to overthrow the government. It was a time of extreme violence so had the rebels succeeded they also would have killed many of their enemies.
@@Mandibil What are you talking about? There was about 20 000 royalists, with riffles, who wanted to do a coup and overthrow the power. Of course you have to crush the rebellion. Are you that dumb?

I would not have picked this actor if as you say he was in his EARLY 20's. They made him out to be a bit of a crazy person. I was wholly and totally disappointed in the movie.
Worst prequel ever, from what I can see in this trailer...
The main character is older, his character development's been reset, and we don't even have an explanation why his last name is now Bonaparte, not Dynamite....
(sarcasm, by the way)
3:46 "Hundreds were killed and Napoleon made a name for himself" ... was he classified as a mass-murderer ? And if not, why not ?
Because of the people he killed many of them were armed and they were actively trying to overthrow the government. It was a time of extreme violence so had the rebels succeeded they also would have killed many of their enemies.
@@history_revealed So it depends on the story the murderer tells himself, whether or not you/he/she is a mass murderer ?
@@Mandibil What are you talking about? There was about 20 000 royalists, with riffles, who wanted to do a coup and overthrow the power. Of course you have to crush the rebellion. Are you that dumb?
#MarieAntoinetteDidNothingWrong
Vive l'Empereur !!!!!!!
Wellington was quite the womaniser.
C est un film grand spectacle mais historiquement c est faux. On ne peut faire un film sur Napoléon mais sur des parties de sa vie. Pour moi c est du french bashing
The original short king 🤴
Ridley woke Scott will mess this movie up and add lies etc to keep the crybabies from crying. Almost every battle fought on sea and land against the British were lost by the French but not all. Scott will make the British as villain's I bet 😂.
Will Scott be producing a film extolling Hitler also?
you compare napoleon to hitler? are you stupid? ah yes you post about "Teulon" says it all.
Yeah, Napoleon won at Austerlitz but lost the return match at Leipzig.
betrayed by his allies
@@Typon Really? Ooohhh, I wonder why? Perhaps they never wanted to be his 'allies' in the first place.
@@uingaeoc3905 they signed treaties, they betrayed him.
Aaannd it is in English not French. I'm out...
🤦🏻♀️ It's made by English-speaking people for English-speaking people. I'm sure it'll be dubbed in other languages as well. I'm not reading subtitles for an entire movie for historical accuracy. 🤷🏻♀️
I think TrueSync AI will be utilised for realistic lip movements alongside french dubbing with this film.
i can already see the french losing their crap over this movie lmao
@GoodPersonTestWebsite yet you were able to read my sentence.
Lol
The French always rant on about Teulon, because it was THE ONLY battle Napoleon won against the British.
No the only 😂 and by far! but English propaganda is powerful, that’s true🤭
@@safedreams6241 Name another?
@@safedreams6241The English? no Scots no Welsh? no Irish? or you just another clown who can't tell the difference between England and Britain they are not the same nor are they interchangeable.
@@uingaeoc3905 Before waterloo, British only fight in spain and portugal with local armies. Napoleon was not there in person, but some Marshals were. They fight against Massena, Soult named "Duke of Damnation" by the British (Talavera Battle,..)
French armies have fought during 20 years against Spain, Portugal, British, Prussian, Austrian, Russian, Italy, Suede....
@@steply24 Th French armies in Spain and France were led by his marshals, they were not 'local' only the Spanish and Portuguese were and they were beaten, in Portugal, in Spain and in France. They were beaten in Egypt as well. The French and Spanish and Danish navies were beaten by the Royal Navy.
This movie was a disappointment
Josephine was BLACK!!!
Josephine was of French ancestry from the Caribbean. She had a fair skin complexion.
Napoleon is a racist, if josephine was black they wouldn't have been married
That mistress was ruthless lol😅
Napoleon was a crossbreed between military man and a policeman and he looked like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon#/media/File:Jacques-Louis_David_-_The_Emperor_Napoleon_in_His_Study_at_the_Tuileries_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg The romantic look of Joaquin Phoenix is very unconvincing.
It states here that you are a historian. What is your name, what are your credentials and what have you published?
Why can't see your reply to me?
You don't need a degree to be a historian,. Idiotic to think that~
