Hey Robby you should get rid of that toyota and look for a Nissian Patrol you would be one of the few in the united states to own one after all its a build you just need the body. It would be cool
I'm here to say thank you. Fred, the tow truck was my little brother Ryan's. He passed 6 years ago in February of 2017. He loved that truck. Thank you for giving Fred life again, and he's sat in my sister's back yard for that 6 years. Ryan loved towing, it was his lifeblood. It didn't matter what time you needed him, he was on the way. I can't tell you all the stories I heard as it would take so long, I'd have to make my own video. I know he would approve. Thank you again. Please, keep the name Fred. Guess the explanation for the naming is in order.. Ford truck RED color.. hence FRED.
Thank you everyone! I'm really so happy for all of this support in carrying on Ryan's dreams, and helping Fred to live on as well. I'm amazed at the healing this project is bringing to my heart. ❤
It may go unsaid but the best tow truck is owned by the person who learns from the mistakes of others, adapts to what actually is proven to be reliable, and finds ways to improve upon the vehicles abilities to perform it's job without failure.
You'll need the dolley for when you're picking up a vehicle from the site of a highway. It's one of those things you'll think you'll never need until you do!
@@joeBeranek-lh8qz absolutely correct, personally I carry two of the harbor freight compressors, since they sometimes go into thermal shutdown before I have all four aired up.
Lockers, some lift, tires and wheeel, new emergency lights 🚨 and a kick butt Robby Layton paint job. I’d leave the pto winch and add auxiliary electrical winches on the front sides and else where on the back. I’d also consider leaving the dolly wheels in the event you need to tow something with flats and don’t have the roll back on hand. If you do a drivetrain swap I’d do a 12 valve if you go diesel or a 7.3 Godzilla if you go gas.
Just in case anyone didn't know, Robby is right, dry powder extinguishers are single use items. The powder jams in the valve and all the pressure will leak out over about 30 minutes after it's fired the first time. When it's serviced they can refill it and clean the valve out.
I agree, when Hillbilly wanted to test it, I'm thinking that's not a good idea, here in Michigan I think there's a date limit, for a service interval even if it never was used.
@@dave_n8puyou are correct, the powder tends to solidify in the bottom over time and they have to be serviced, and hence the reason for the expiration date
Very true I would like to add that any extinguisher that has been discharged should be serviced so that it has its full charge to put out a fire. They are suposed to be inspected yearly as well. Just an FYI for those who didn't know
They make an attachment that bolts to the through the center hole of the wheel lift for a trailer hitch attachment. You should be able to easily manufacture it. The welded on hitch will interfere with the pivot. It will cause oil pan clearance issues when tilting on some cars. A removable option would be less intrusive. The chains can hook into the L Arm slots, you dont have to use the hooks on the wheel lift receivers. The hooks are for using chains as tie downs on the newer receivers
I’m probably more excited about this build than any of the previous ones. That truck came off the assembly line with such such a solid foundation that aside from maybe lockers in the front and rear that any upgrades you do is more personalization than necessity. They were pretty basic but the whole selling point was that they’re purely work horses, and that they were/are.
I know you're talking about using an electric winch on the boom for more speed.👍 Would it be possible to keep the PTO winch in place and mount the new electric above it? Then you could run the PTOs cable straight out the rear for use when you have move something that would require the use of pulleys to double or triple line the electric to get enough pull. Like it's been said, it's slow, but it will pull a house over!
When you get your sliders back on use STP oil treatment as a lubricant. Ive used it on tow truck slider bars and booms and also semi fifth wheels for over 30 years

It seems that there's a steady stream of people who don't understand the crap that you have to deal with to put out 3 videos a week. It's evident that you are scrambling to come up with content.
Robby formula wheel lifts have a hitch option. It’s a big clamshell that goes over the center pin and has a bolt that goes through the wheel lift. When your done using it stows on a holder on the bed. As a tow professional for over 20 years your hard mount receiver is going to cause more grief than it solved. There are also 5th wheel hitch kits that secure to the wheel lift. Keep the hydraulic winch. They do long pulls with out overheating like electrics do. Also off on a hydraulic winch with no load is off where a electric takes several seconds to stop. We used to run a set of implement fittings on the back of our wreckers to run jacks, jaws, and other rescue equipment.
Thank you for the insight! I new about the receiver hitch attachment but we are only going to use this truck for off road rescue.. we did decide to keep hydraulic winch but we are also going to add an electric winch to it! And some side pull winches..
If it were mine I’d start with putting some lockers in it, giving it some lift, wheels, and bigger tires. I’d leave the hydraulic winch then add a bunch of electric winches everywhere else. If you do an engine swap at some point I think I’d get with Industrial Injection and do a 12 valve unless you want to stick with gas in which case I’d do a 7.3 Godzilla. So excited about this one!

Can't do oversized tires/wheels & lift if they plan to use the wheel lift... it's limited on how much travel it has & it needs to be able to reach flat to the ground. The other RUclips wreckers like Matt's, Rory's & Eric's... they're using slings, wheel lifts are different
The Boss asked about the dolly wheel , I have just watched Casey LaDelle latest video using them because the truck was stuck in 4 wheel and if towed would have wrecked the transmission. Good to watch
23:20 A dry type fire extinguisher like that one can last for years and years, but once you fire it off, the dry compound prevents the valve from sealing and it will soon go flat and no longer work. Most fire extinguishers can be refilled and recertified.

@@rayneethling7809 The year doesn't do justice for a "Patina" rig so yeah, I agree, it needs a flawless paint job in order to promote the product. Since Robby is keen on the number 24, I'm assuming the number refers to Jeff Gordon. I agree, flashy colors is what this rig needs, it would be perfect for this build, put the number 24 on the doors , call the truck "Gordo" a play on Gordon and Ford.
@@georgejulien3286 So in other words you'd rather see the sponsor Avalon King get ripped off since they are the company who is paying for the entire build. Just because the truck will obviously see mud, dents and scratches is a no reason for taking a defeatist attitude don't you think?? The guy owns a body shop with a full staff for crying out loud!! Painting and body work is what he does, he can wrap or paint that truck 5 days a week if he so chooses! And he can do it all and it won't be at your expense. Don't be such a killjoy So in other words... you never want this truck to look like it can actually do work... You'd rather see Robby drive around in something that looked like junk to avoid scratches and that would make you happy
Nice fabrication Robby, looks good buddy! Retired Welder with 37 years experience, I like watching your fabricate jobs! Never seize is meant for bolts Hillbilly! lol 😂 Put some bearing grease on it brother it should stick to it longer! 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Keep the hydraulic winch because it is 10 times stronger than any electric winch. You just have to ideal up the truck to increase the GPM on the hydraulic pump to increase the winch speed. Hydraulic winches have 100 percent duty cycle and electric winches have 10 percent duty cycle.
Change the boom to use 2 winches, add a winch to each side and the front. Use electric winches with wireless remotes, mount all remotes in a portable box. See Matt’s heavy wrecker. Add a tool box to carry ropes, cables and tools.
Way to go Demeri great choice glad you bought that Toyo. I think the new name for the tow truck should be AKD for Avalon King Demeri. I think that you keep working on the wrecker to make it bad to the bone like Rory's truck is.
Paint it 2:17 and make yourself proud to ride in , you do own a paint and body shop , I have been in paint and body for over 45 years as and my vehicles always shinned. 😎
Castle Rock, Colorado, is about 15 miles south of the Denver Metro area and is where my son and his wife live and work and attend church. Once again another great video!!! Thanks for the great content ☺️ I believe maybe follow the families wish and call it Fred the tow truck 😁 Thanks again!!!
Big Red 'King Fred'.Paint "Fred" in gold where Frod goes on the front fenders, and have a Crown painted over the blue oval grill badge.(Why advertise a company that doesn't sponsor?TV shows remove badging.)
Always keep dollies on a truck . You will use them in town . NOT on the trails of course . And if you get on the PD rotation lists , they are required equipment .(if that's how it's done nowadays ! ) Love your channel .
@@RobbyLaytonit would be wise to have dollies even for off road work ,any 4x4 and AWD vehicles may need the assistance of having the drive line not turning . Just make the Dollies sit on a rack behind the cab instead of on the bed. Hope that you keep the hydraulics, but add electric winches ,light bars to the front and rear , Casey LaDelle has a similar wrecker so his input would be valuable . You could add an electric idle up instead of a cable operated system .
Ceramic coat it before you paint it!!! I absolutely want to see that patina coated while we have a chance! That truck really needs a nice custom paint job, and so do your flatbeds!! Out here in PA, body shops with tow trucks usually try to outdo each other with custom paint techniques. Maybe don't go too crazy on the wrecker, though, and try to do the custom work on the places least likely to get bashed in on the trail. Another thing, PLEASE keep the hydraulic winch! It might be slow, but it is a strong puller and it I would trust it to hold up that sling far more than an electric winch. Plus, it'll be your one working winch if you ever have an electrical failure. Don't let that stop you from adding electric winches, but there's absolutely no reason to take off the winch that was designed by engineers who know more than you to work with that truck. If you put side winches on it, add some outriggers. You won't pull the truck over that way, and it'll give you a place to hook when rigging a snatch block. Don't lift it too much if you are going to keep the wheel lift. You may have to lower the wheel lift if you do. Angle of the dangle. Those wheel chocks are called Scotch Blocks, and they are awesome. Keep those. Those dollies, man keep them too. Leave the mounts on the truck and keep the dollies at the shop or mount them on the top of the toolbox of the big flatbed. They're handy as hell to have around, especially at a 2 car accident. Keep the grease the hell off of those receivers!!! That stuff gets everywhere!!! Every time the mechanics at the shop did me a favor and greased my receivers, I took them apart and went to the Blue Beacon Truck Wash with the company credit card and had those guys pressure wash it back off. I usually paint the T bar, wax it and spray everything with silicone!!! Heck, the truck is SPONSORED by a product that's one job is to make paint slippery. Use it. I'd like to see how well that works, too!! Otherwise, gears and lockers for sure. That old 460 is a beast, but you need to address it's weaknesses if you are going to go off road and beat the doo doo out of it. The pushrods are weak. Upgrade the pushrods, add a guide plate, and change your rockers out, bare minimum. If you are going to keep that motor, though, you'd better get the other gas tank in and working because that thing will get 6mpg on a good day, and in low range on rocks you're going to start measuring gallons to the mile. If that was my truck, I would buy a shortbed F150 with a 300 straight six, rebuild the 300 with a mild cam and a little more compression for the wrecker, and then rebuild the 460 with a wild cam and a lot more compression for the F150. If you are going to run a loud 460, run turndowns or run it out the back. Putting it out the side leads to a drone that makes it pretty annoying after a while for the driver. If you must remove the push bumper, you should weld a plate on the back and make it a skid steer attachment.
Robby - the more winches the better options you have ! I do off road recovery and have 7. My 20K main with 250" of 1/2" is designed to pull 360 deg. through the tower cable guide that is set up higher than the cab. Goodluck with the build!
I coated my new Tahoe with Armor Shield IX in 2019 and have been really pleased with the product. It produced an amazing shine but didn’t last as long on the horizontal surfaces (hood & roof) due to constant sun and weather exposure, but Avalon King stood behind their product and sent me replacement bottles. I also purchased a couple of bottles of the spray when it first came out. I highly recommend Avalon KIng and Armor Shield IX.
@@hopecooper1253 I think Robby's is the coolest snow cat on youtube. It reminds me of "The A Team" van. It's a big party bus and has been super reliable.
For though5s on the possible use of the wheel dolly system for your wrecker, it might pay to talk with Cassey, as he has a great deal of experience using them for recoveries?
that receiver tube is going to go into oil pans when lifted up because of the angle. it depends on the vehicle. there is a plate that clamps to the wheel lift. also check that the nylon spacers are in the wheelift that extends out. they wear out or are missing. this keeps the wheel lift from rattling. edit: what is holding the wheel lift from turning when a trailer is hooked on the wrecker
You should paint it red white and blue and call the tow pig old glory... keep up all the great work guys and gal's love brother Jimmy Wayne from Enterprise Alabama God bless you all
Add a set of frame and axle forks to slide on the wheel lift. Lifting by the tires is an easy way to tow a vehicle but if a tire and wheel is ripped off because of a broken knuckle or ball joint, being able to lift by the axle tube or the frame rails can make life a lot easier. You can also weld pieces of flat stock to the sides of the under lift so when the T bar is pulled all the way in, it prevents it from pivoting just like the chains do for using the receiver hitch. Using this method will allow you to adjust the height of the hitch ball without having to reset the chains.
Always takes time to catch up on the maintenance when the vehicle has been sitting for some time. You got some good bones to work with, truck should suit your purpose well.
In my '95 F250 4x4 I've got a power inverter and when i go to use it or jump start another vehicle i made a aok wood shim that i stick in between the the throttle stop. So it increases the RPMS without me having to sit inside the truck. It works very well.
i'd like to see that beater car get the oil drained now and see how the cooking oil handled the abuse. Truck is gonna look cool when your done with it, don't doubt it at all. keep up the work Robby, boss and crew
Every time I either put a new tank on a vehicle I prime it with rust preventative paint then undercoat it. Protects it from future rust especially since I live in the rust belt. I also paint oil pans for the same reason
That Tow Truck is Going To Be One Of Your Best & Most Used Trucks ,But Your Going To Need Those Tire Dollys You Need To Have Them On There Some Way Even If Their Hard To Get On & Off
On the wheel lift arms I wouldn't put grease. I would do liquid graphite. I haul cars for a living and that's what I put on the posts on my trailer so everything slides super easy, and it won't collect dirt and dust like grease will. 👍👍

So in other words you never want to see it actually do work.
Don't be such a killjoy
So in other words...
you never want this truck to look like it can actually do work... You'd rather see Robby drive around in something that looked like junk to avoid scratches and that would make you happy
I think you should do a Avalon King body wrap. Now sir would really stand out. What ever you do I'm sure it will be awesome. Keep up the great videos.
Can’t wait to see the bed and all sand blasted and repainted. Won’t be Robby’s if the paint isn’t perfect.
Those look like the old manual dollies,Need to get some new self-loading one
Dont you think it would be a good idea to replace the hydrolic lines on that old tow truck, so they dont blow out when you need them the most?
Nice fabrication Robby, looks good buddy! Retired Welder with 37 years experience, I like watching your fabricate jobs! Never seize is meant for bolts Hillbilly! lol 😂 Put some bearing grease on it brother it should stick to it longer! 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Those "wheel chocks" are actually called Scotch Blocks. (Not to be confused with snatch block.
That receiver might hit the oil pan when you're towing something low, or might not 😊 just curious
Change the boom to use 2 winches, add a winch to each side and the front. Use electric winches with wireless remotes, mount all remotes in a portable box. See Matt’s heavy wrecker. Add a tool box to carry ropes, cables and tools.
Once you discharge an extinguisher, even just a little, you have to get it recharged.
Way to go Demeri great choice glad you bought that Toyo. I think the new name for the tow truck should be AKD for Avalon King Demeri. I think that you keep working on the wrecker to make it bad to the bone like Rory's truck is.
Awesome video! Love the Wrecker! So many things going on. Can hardly wait to see what is next 😊 Thank you for sharing! 👌
Paint it 2:17 and make yourself proud to ride in , you do own a paint and body shop , I have been in paint and body for over 45 years as and my vehicles always shinned. 😎
When is Rory going to get your Old School Wrecker done?
That Land Cruiser is going to be a sick build I can't wait to see the videos on it
Honestly, why dont you get your Snow Mobile ready for Winter time? Cleaned up etc and Painted.
Castle Rock, Colorado, is about 15 miles south of the Denver Metro area and is where my son and his wife live and work and attend church. I’m a native of Colorado and see castle Rock as one of the most dramatic areas of massive growth over the past 30 years. Best Mexican food in the USA at La Loma, as well.
For this truck it will strictly be off road
@@RobbyLaytonit would be wise to have dollies even for off road work ,any 4x4 and AWD vehicles may need the assistance of having the drive line not turning .
Just make the Dollies sit on a rack behind the cab instead of on the bed.
Hope that you keep the hydraulics, but add electric winches ,light bars to the front and rear , Casey LaDelle has a similar wrecker so his input would be valuable .
You could add an electric idle up instead of a cable operated system .
Casey has just posted a video, where the wheel dolly system made his recovery for a broken down vehicle, out on the trails, so much safer and easier.
I hope you are giving it a really good wash. Specially under. I know how horrible it is to work on something that dirty 😰
It's gonna need a new fuel selector valve. One tank shouldn't feed into other one. Gonna cause problems later when you replace that tank
Need lockers! Make it as wheel-able as trailmator 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
No the new land cruiser, I watch your channel bc I enjoy seeing your skills building thing from scratch.
Just use ak- (whatever year the truck is)
AK-92
@@RobbyLayton Yes sir!
Thanks!
Thank you!!
It's starting to get cold out now. It won't be long and it will be time to fire up the snow cat!!!!!!!!!!!
This is true!! Whiskers can’t wait to get in the shop for some love!!

@jeepindave5464 Matt is doing a great job on the Killer Bee!! Robby needs to get busy on his snowcat!
Eric’s snow cats a tow truck that thinks gonna be the best one out there
@@hopecooper1253 I think Robby's is the coolest snow cat on youtube. It reminds me of "The A Team" van. It's a big party bus and has been super reliable.
Them hooks are for short chaining vehicle that are missing wheels and the safety chains out the bed are to make sure you don’t lose a vehicle.
Love that wrecker! Great work y'all!
For though5s on the possible use of the wheel dolly system for your wrecker, it might pay to talk with Cassey, as he has a great deal of experience using them for recoveries?
Awesome jokes and she looks just like Demri! ❤
that receiver tube is going to go into oil pans when lifted up because of the angle. it depends on the vehicle. there is a plate that clamps to the wheel lift. also check that the nylon spacers are in the wheelift that extends out. they wear out or are missing. this keeps the wheel lift from rattling. edit: what is holding the wheel lift from turning when a trailer is hooked on the wrecker
Good morning I like the bad ass tow truck. That will definitely come in handy on recoveries. I am looking forward to seeing the first recovery
You should paint it red white and blue and call the tow pig old glory... keep up all the great work guys and gal's love brother Jimmy Wayne from Enterprise Alabama God bless you all
Having a rust free tow truck on the trail will be different. I'm anxious to see you put her thru some adventurous projects and coming out on top.
You put some nice Milwaukee tools on the tow truck you might get a visit from your brothers friend in the black truck.
King Avalon . Sounds perfect for it.
FRED all the way! Honor the original owner.
Good video. Nice wrecker! Fred is a perfect name.

Love the old trucks being restored ! Maybe you can call it King Wrecker ?
Oil pan smasher added to the wheel lift!
Best stretch out the wire on wrecker check for fishhooks and oil the cable. Remember to measure the diameter every 3' for wear damage and rust.
