you damn near gave me a heart attack when you said you were retiring!!!! Your videos are what inspired me to start turning four years ago, when I was only 14. I’m not sure what id do if you retired.
How great to see the start of the woodturning guru that is Tim Yoder. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode and I'm so glad you decided to upload it. Thank you and stay safe..!
(A) Cool find on the old video and congrats on the 40 years!! (B) That was one of the best shows ever on making pens from start to finish. For a newby thinking about getting into that, you give a LOT of very useful detail (including the whole pen-press section).
Hi Tim, I’m glad you found and shared this. Also glad they like the idea and gave the go ahead for the start of your and Brian’s TV career. I was inspired by your videos to get into turning. As for the upgrade to your shop for the show, did you have to get a Stubby lathe, I could never find one. I wound up getting a small Jet due to limited shop space (I.e. corner of the basement). A few years ago, after retiring, I moved, build a nice shop and splurged on a dream lathe, my Robust American Beauty. Now I’m trying to become the skilled turner this lathe deserves. Thanks for your videos as I alway pick up some pointer to that end (even the wacky fun ones). Hope you and Brian stay safe and well to keep the videos coming. Cheers, Tom
A blast from the past. When "Woodturning Techniques" with David Hout ended its (only) season on HGVT, I found you on PBS. My wife bought a Jet Mini-Lathe for Christmas and that was it - I was hooked. The old 4:3 format really brings back memories. Really enjoyed that. Thanks!
Love your videos. I started wood turning about 3 years ago and found your channel then. It's a small world, I didn't realize you worked for RSU. I grew up in Claremore and was cruising main about the time you start there. We used to call RSU "Harvard on the hill". That is where my dad went to collage and my daughter will be graduating from next year. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next RUclips video.
Enjoyed your video, the first thing I ever made was a ink pen at a friends house then I was hooked two weeks later I had a wood lathe of my own, I have made sever small kits, pens, key chains, razors, seam rippers, plus spinning tops, and my own invention of a lighthouse fan chain pull and a bowling ball and pin ink pen. The hardest thing I ever made was a pocket watch , never have made a bowl or vase , and I have not turned in quite a while , maybe ill get back into turning for Christmas stuff.
Greatly informative fist time pen making video!! Wish I would have seen this when I started years ago!! Great career in TV keep up the great work in the inter web !! Congratulations !!
Congratulations on a well deserved retirement. Thanks for the trip down amnesia lane-how many of us started with a mini-lathe? How many Emmy Awards did you win? Tim you are truly an American Icon 🍻🍻🖖🏻
Congratulations on retirement, though be careful, people think you have a lot of free time now....You know where that goes. Delightful to see this early effort, loved your TV show, you're the reason I learned to turn.
Always great to see your work, Tim~! Congrats on the retirement and I'm very happy to hear that you'll still be on RUclips. BTW, I (still) have the same Craftsman tilting-head bandsaw that you had in the video. It was my first bandsaw (back in '91) and it's now the backup to my Laguna. You're the only other person that I've either heard of or seen having one. Congrats again~!
Congratulations on your retirement, that means more time to create woodturning videos! Looking forward to a real symposium again so I can add to myTim’s Tools collection... BTW, I still really enjoy my Elbo Tool!
Great video guys. I remember those days when ya had color in your hair along time ago Hahahaha. if ya could see me you would know why I can poke fun hahahaha
And this is the best how to make a pen video ive ever seen. I can actually say i understand how to make a pen now. Although i probably wont. I dont like rules or finicky things 🤣🤣🤣
Glade you can retire. But this is a retirement job making pens! I have been retired a year now and have been turning pens for 20 plus years. Great pass time for getting your thoughts right. I hope you have a great time in retirement! I have done so much traveling this year.
Tim Love the tools I got from your store. Do you have the Elbow in stock? I am ready to buy. Also, I never got a chance to see any of you TV shows. Do you plan to put those on your web site or RUclips ant time in the future?
I had a bit of a delay with this last batch. I should have them ready in a couple of weeks. I have just one in stock so if you hurry 🙂 Www.wtwtim.com RSU-TV owns the rights to the PBS episodes. I think they posted some on their RUclips page.
Thank you so much for sharing the video, Tim. Is that you air filter on the floor? My wife's aunt recently passed and we got something similar looking. I was thinking on using it for the same reason. LOL. Also, looking forward to more up coming videos!
You were a natural at this from the get go. No wonder you're so popular and very good at this. Well done Tim. Continued success.

I can actually say i understand how to make a pen now. Although i probably wont. I dont like rules or finicky things 🤣🤣🤣
My only gripe is you didn’t find this five years ago when I began turning and making pens!
So serious, I like it.
Great looking pen. Thanks for the great information. My first pen video. What was the finish you used?
