I live in Alabama, and im trying to establish a "Palm Garden" I have a pretty large and empty back yard and I would love to see if I can grow some palms bacck there. Some areas are shaded and some areas are full sun.The area I want to plant is not full sun in summer, but motly suny in the colder months (January through March) I believe I will have to add some sand to the soil so that it doesnt pack too tight around the palms. I have a neghbor that just plopped some sago palms in his yard and they are absolutely beautiful. He didnt do anything to the soil so he is constantly trying to loosen it up around the plants. He said that if he could start over he would work in some sand before he plant them.

Hi Rosa, - Sago Palms although not true palms, look amazing and are very tolerant of many conditions, they are a great small slow, growing palm. Other small palms that are recommended would be the Pygmy Date Palm - Slow growing but eventually reaching approx 4m about 12ft - both palms will be okay in dappled partial shade and full sun - Soil wise I would recommend just bringing in some new topsoil that is a sandy loam rather than just adding sand - especially if you have a poor clay soil that doesn't drain well. Good luck with your palm garden
