    Ranar is also less of a removal magnet than Brago. There's an argument that Ranar is the more consistent blink commander, providing value without having to attack.

    I hope we get more fortell cards soon. It feels a shame that even "the" foretell commander is leaning away from foretell. I like foretell a lot and would love see more play choices of signet or fortell T2.

      Absolutely. The whole reason I got the Ranar deck was my desire to make a Foretell deck, because I realized that if you run one foretell card, its best to run 3 or more, as you're otherwise advertising what it is you foretold.

      Sun Titan might be part precon effect (it was in the precon) and part old combo. Sun Titan with something like Fiend Hunter combos with the sac outlets that used to combo with Ranar/RiP. Fiend Hunter wasn't in the average deck apparently but I think those two combined might be part of why Titan snuck into the average deck.

    I made my Ranar build with a focus on Polymorphing the spirits and winning via blinky value/combo... It's like a Poly-Kykar deck decided that Red was forbidden for some reason, and leaned on a Brago deck for emotional support.
    It's weird and a bad idea and it's mine and I love it 😔 but I love everyone's Ranar builds no matter what the focus is! He's a very neat commander.

    You have inspired me to revisit Ranar; this will definitely help me focus the deck a bit more.
    Two suggestions I have that are admittedly pricier upgrades:
    1. Solitude is an absolutely nasty blink target and can act as just removal if we need it to.
    2. Archaeomancer's Map is a surprisingly good include as blinking it searches out more plains which thins our deck while also guaranteeing we have lands in hand to capitalize on its effect.

    After the eratta, there is one infinite combo remaining for Ranar. Portcullis still goes infinite with Ranar. It is really easy to execute, but is really tricky for a couple of reasons. First, Portcullis + Ranar doesn't have any "target" or "may" clauses to allow you to stop the combo; without an onboard wincon or way to stop the combo the game will end in a draw. Second, Azorious doesn't have many good wincons deriving from infinite ETB or LTB effects (lifegain into Aetherflux Resovior is the only one i've found so far). Fiinally, Portcullis is an oppressive stax piece that will shut down anything else you want to do. Still, an infinite combo with Ranar reamins!

  • @TheCrazyPlayer
    @TheCrazyPlayer 2 года назад +2

    Personally, I think the humble Deputy of Detention is a great add to this deck. When it ETBs, it exiles all non-land permanents an opponent controls that have the same name until the Deputy leaves the field; this doesn't *sound* that useful at first, but with the rise of Treasure tokens, being able to wipe out an opponents store of extra mana is actually pretty powerful (since tokens don't return when exiled this way), and it also works if the enemy is playing a token deck (like Krenko or Angry Omnath). And, since the Deputy can easily be blinked, you can do that repeatedly if someone keeps making tokens. It's a token board wipe on a body!

    • @odisseas2570
      @odisseas2570 2 года назад +1

      Deputy on treasure is probably a bad idea. The opponent can sacrifice the token in response to the trigger, causing it to fizzle. I agree on the other uses though.

    • @TheCrazyPlayer
      @TheCrazyPlayer 2 года назад

      @@odisseas2570 True, but that still means they don’t have any treasures. It can also be used on Food or Clue tokens, or (in a pinch) on something only vulnerable to exile, like a Theros god or a Blightsteel Colossus. As someone who's been a dedicated fanboy since the precon was released, I can tell you that sometimes the deck is an unstoppable value engine that can remove any threat while drawing cards and making a billion spirits, but on rare occasions you can just end up with a board of five 1/1 spirits and Ranar. Distant Melody is just the type of card this deck needs sometimes!

    I have been brewing a Ranar deck for a few months and came up with a couple of interesting things (to me, anyway)!
    Reveillark - pretty cool recursion given that quite a few creatures in the deck have attack power of 2 or less.
    Reflector Mage - interesting lock out mechanic! Flicker to lock down one or more key pieces.
    Altar of the Brood - an alternate win-con for 1 mana 🤩
    Eidolon of Rhetoric/archon of Emeria - since flicker can get these cards to come back on end step, you can turn off the effect for yourself on your 1st main phase and at your end step these cards come back to restrict other players

    I think the best place for Ranar to go is with cards that exile themselves from the field or hand, since it's the part he offers unique from the alternatives. That means looking at cards with Suspend, which have a few good draw engines of their own, and permanents like all-star control finisher Aetherling and Midnight Clock that refuels your hand completely when it ticks up. Obviously the infinite flicker combos would stay, but I think this style would involve removing a lot of the value blink engines and targets that would find a better home in a more dedicated commander like Brago or Yorion. You want to run Ranar for his ability to see exiling happening.

    I built my version of Ranar and almost immediately removed almost all foretell cards. Most of them are pretty bad so why play them?
    I think you missed at least a couple of cards that could be counted as Win Conditions
    1)Blessed Sanctuary - each time we cast a creature or our blinked creature comes back we get a 2/2 unicorn. This is pretty similar to the Ranar effect and it's on enchantment. We get small protection from the red sorcery earthquakes as a bonus as well.
    2)Harmonious Archon - makes two 3/3 on etb + turns our 1/1 spirits into the 3/3 flyers.
    3)Deadeye Navigator - this is such a "must-have" card in any blink deck.
    If you wanna use a combo of blinking 2 creatures why you didn't add Glimmerpoint Stag? It has the same effect as Flickerwisp so it's just pure consistency.
    Sephara skyblade is really good in this deck because it's easy to cast and protects all of your flyers
    Also I think you forgot to add updated deck list in to the description :)

    Three other cards that are amazing in this deck.
    First, the enchantment Kindred Discovery. Since you are almost always creating at least one spirit each turn, you get enormous amounts of card draw, including often, on other players turns.
    Second, and this card has won me so many games because I added it, Lavinia of the Tenth. Flickering her on your turn (every turn if possible) can absolutely shut down your opponents decks completely. No attacks, blocks, or activated abilities on the majority (or all) of their board until your next turn at which point you flicker Lavinia again and shut them down again. Oh, if only she was a spirit.
    And third, Cathar's Crusade. Again, since you are almost always adding at least one creature per turn, you are almost always buffing up your board to make large creatures. If you really want extra value from this card, also add Herald of Secret Streams to make them all unblockable. This combo together has also been a great win condition for my deck.
    Of course, Elesh Norn is a beast in this deck powering up your spirit tokens, and sometimes demolishing opponents boards.
    And finally, some other maybes:
    -Deadeye Navigator
    -Peregrine Drake
    -Grand Arbiter Augustin IV
    -Intangible Virtue
    -Suture Priest
    -Soul Warden
    -Drogskol Reaver
    -Coat of Arms
    -Aether Shockwave (clearing your way to swing in.)
    -Sephara, Sky's Blade (almost always cheap to cast and protects your spirits)
    -Divine Visitation
    -Ephara, God of the Polis

    Another note I need to add about the errata: It clarifies that Ranar's ability only makes one spirit per spell or ability, no matter how many things were exiled by that spell or ability. Descend Upon The Sinful, Synthetic Destiny, and Curse of the Swine pumped with a huge amount of mana may exile a whole board, but each one will only ever make 1 spirit (and an angel in the case of Descend, usually.)

    I tried to build Ranar, but my decklist was a mess. I tried with Yorion, but the washing machine seemed too degenerate and repetitive.
    I finally settled with Ojutai. Its all control except for a few voltron pieces. I like it so far.
    Azorious needs a shake up, something other than blink

    Most of the time when people ask 'why aren't you playing X as the commander instead' it's in bad faith and Ranar's popularity seems to suggest that his players have thankfully learnt to ignore people who ask those kinds of questions.

    It's weird for me to see cutting command sphere for strixhaven stadium. Yeah, stadium technically does tap for mana, but you're going to have a bad time using it as a mana rock since it paints a target on your back and attracts removal. You want your mana rocks to be played early and to stick around for a while. Stadium is a bad card for that.
