It amazes me how nobody is using the combination of ropes and engine. First thing I taught anyone who was crewing on my boats was rope throwing, tying and releasing. You can then tie off on the bow or stern and use your engine against the rope. Many years back when I had a river boat we did enjoy watching the hire boaters.
Ive took a 50 ft canal boat up the Llangollen canal twice, never been on a boat before…..this would be child’s play in comparison…….didn’t have a single issue or put a scratch on it , over the two full weeks we did , but I suppose 23 yrs of hgv driving…taught me to look ahead and adjust accordingly, do everything on the water slowly and methodically…..you’re there to relax, it’s not a race, 👍👌🇮🇲
Just back from a few days on our own boat and it must be stupid week , people speeding on the ant ,passing to close to moored boats, leaving rubbish on the banks, more control is needed on these one week wonders .
Hi Jonny, well, it’s a relaxing Labour day Monday holiday here in NSW…the rubbish man woke me up, I thought I would have a look at RUclips and you came along…thanks a lot! Three Valium and six whiskeys later I am finally able to write this note. I think that you are in great danger being anywhere near that bridge today. Seriously, thank you for another great video from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 😊
Well hello over there and thank you! Lay off the Valium’s and the Whiskey until you have sat next to me and experienced it in first hand! Then I’ll join you! 😂😂
@@jonnytreehouse yeah, we will have to buy a crate of whiskey 🥃 and have it sitting between us! But, what will we do with all the empty bottles? I see that we are not allowed to drop them in the drink! That ranger might come back and do more than tell off two very drunk gentlemen! I have just been visiting Robslondon, also a very enjoyable channel. I had better see what’s going on down under before going about my day. It hit about 37 degrees here in Kellyville yesterday, today should only be about 28 degrees. Have a good evening.
There is no training to take out a 40 foot boat on the broads, at times it's horrible, luckily my boat goes under tiny Potter bridge and we're in Narnia, heaven!
Yay! Another video! Love watching these. Goodness though I'm cringing in parts. It's quite worrying how poor some of the manoeuvring is - makes me wonder what "boat handling" demonstrations are being given prior to hire.
Thank you so much. 😊 as I’ve hired several boats, you get given the basics. How to leave a mooring, how to turn, how to stern on and side moor, always give way to sails boats. Then you are on your own. Good luck everyone! lol 😂 so glad you enjoy my videos and thank you for watching.
A long time ago I worked for NBYC in Hickling and loved doing two seasons on the broads. I miss it sometimes but I dont miss some of the idiots you get faffing about on the water. The amount of times that bridge was hit or they had fouled their props up and one of the guys would have to go on a rescue mission there I lost count. But there was always Lathams which me and my Mrs used to visit often from our cottage in Stalham. I loved Norfolk and we miss it.... but seeing this makes me think that the ranger who I vaguely knew back than certainly earned their pay.....
G Afternoon johnyT,we're on our last Day today, and we're disappointed we didn't see you at Ludham, but I just wanted to mention,at the beginning off your Video, you mention a Boat moving from one side to the other, there's a yellow Boat mooring, in the back off the shot it's the "Broadland Orion" a 30ft Broom, we hired that Boat in1992,,and still holidaying there.chets*Rgds Steve&Theresa
We got stuck behind potterhiem bridge last week with yacht , tight going up , virtually impossible to come back ,pilot squeezed us through with inch to spare , Super full moon and poor drainage from the bure ,apparently causing problems .
wow , what alot of chaos lol , the boats lately are getting that big that you'll soon need a ships pilot licence , like that fair regal , What a Whopper that was , it was like a double decker bus .
Darwin, these are only floating caravans. How can these people not master the basics. They have an engine, large rudder and reverse gear, and spring lines available to use.
Please remember that the majority of these folks probably have no experience of handling boats and we really shouldn’t be laughing at their misfortunes. They are just having a holiday so please give them a break.
Just imagine if you hired a car and the hire company said ‘that’s the steering wheel. The pedals are clutch , brake, accelerator. That’s a gear lever and there’s the handbrake’. ‘Off you go and by the way drive on the left’.
There’s more big boats, and big tall boat son the Broads In the last few years. More suited to rivers and waterways where there’s no bridges. Customers, hirers or these boats have got to be told they are limited to areas of the Broads that are restricted. As for the pre-cruise briefing, if you say you’re happy once they’ve given you the gas the electrics and so on they’re more than happy to get you on your way without any boat handling instruction., The bigger boatyards can easily afford the cost of a prang or two of GRP in the cost of hiring these boats
Haha yes, I admit I’m guilty as charged on that front too! My first boating holiday I tried to reverse my boat into a space at How Hill! Oh the shame! Thankfully I’ve gained a bit more experience now! ☺️
Why the insults? Hiring out boats to people who've had no experience provides a massive boost to the local economy. Damage costs are built into the rental and no one gets hurt.

It’s more a case of inexperience that causes this, the boatyards turnaround is so fast that a first timer has no idea what they are letting themselves in for, this is an inland waterway but still susceptible to tides and the elements.

@nigelfarley814 you use your outer ropes to moor and your inner ropes to stop you moving with the movement of the tide.
They also exhibit poor handling most are not used to.
