I love the fact that his laughs have been preserved here. I love to imagine Elliott playing to a room full of people and laughing along, just enjoying life, as he deserved to. ❤️
A friend showed me this. I've been listening to Elliott for years, but never heard this song. Hearing Elliott laugh somewhat helped me cope with all my problems.
I am in agreement with all of you, I too utterly appreciate his joy, fleeting or not. Wow, what a character. I have spent nights in tears mourning a guy I never knew. I know I am not alone in this. This is a fantastic track. :>
Why oh WHY am I so in love with Elliott? That laugh just...makes me smile from ear to ear. I've never met him, but to me he seems like an imperfectly perfect, gorgeous human being. Elliott sir, you've taken over my life. I miss you. Why are you gone? Why love?
@@conviction_amp I started listening to him at 15 and I just turned 33. I feel the same way. Not so much the taken over my life part but just about everything else they’ve said.
This seems like it was such a perfect elliott smith show: Crowd actively listening, elliott smith playing like he's at his top game and him genuinely enjoying playing for everyone. HIs laugh just shows what an angel he was, and i mean that in the most non-sarcastic, heterosexual way possible.
I've heard this song by Hank Williams Jr a thousand times, and only just found Eliot singing right now.. the man got it. Just like the country legends did, he took the pain and distilled it so we could bear it, because he'd borne the weight too, and he cared.
I have yet to order. I’m kinda coming back out of the rabbit hole again. Will always be my favorite musician and I could listen to any of his songs on repeat and always find something new. The other day I got pissed when I realized, once again, that I’ll never be able to see him live or meet him and that’s when I decided I needed another break.
@@theenchantedceiling I’m doing ok. My dad had a heart attack right in front of me and my family the other day and his pulse went away. Didn’t think he’d make it but by the grace of god the EMT’s got a pulse back, the Dr.’s were able to get the blockage out and he’s alive and recovering at the hospital in town. Still a bit shook up so here to try and crack a smile instead of relapsing after 3+ years. I’ll be good, though. I finished some songs I get to let him listen to for the first time tomorrow. Thanks for asking, man. I rlly ‘preciate it!
It's amazing, looking through his list of covers is like looking through a list of all my favourite songs. If there's something he's covered that isn't already a favourite of mine then I know it soon surely will be.
i love that there are no negative comments on this message board. how could there be i suppose:) much obliged fellow elliott fans. the end tag is hilarious.
Hank Jr. He did always wear a Bocephus shirt. I’m thinking he liked Sr. better though cause… well, everyone does. I think he does a Sr. song and it’s a lot more serious than the way he plays this one.
You can hear a little bit of Shooting Star in some of these chord changes, or at least in the acoustic versions of shooting star I've heard. Further proof that his genius was the product of immense intuitive ability and a life devoted to being a student of music. He didn't just take influence from artists he admired, he could take seemingly every musical idea he heard and translate it into something original and equally compelling. As someone whose spent a long time trying to make any single bit of music sound Elliott-esque, It's really pretty hard to wrap my head around his ability. Otherworldly
Ah thank you for this comment, the vocal melody for the line "nobody wants to get high on the town" reminded me of one of Elliot's song but I couldnt figure out which, but it's the same melody as "so bad, so far" from shooting star
@@BradwurstBAM THANK YOU for this. Could have spent my life wondering and listening but I only have this on RUclips so I'd never have listened to them in a brief enough succession to notice. I hear bits and pieces of Elliott's progression in so many old tunes, I really feel that he is the songwriter's songwriter.
He lived in Texas. The original “fuck you, Nashville” country artists went to Austin. Bet he liked a bunch of the country artists cause they were actually good. One would almost have to be soulless to not like Hank Sr.
I love how you can hear his laugh at that one part, its so sincere and great. man I would've given anything to get to experience this live, thank you SO much for uploading this because its provided me with many smiles. thank you I love you.
Should I feel sad on having missed out on this song for so long, or glad that I finally found something of him, I hadn't had the pleasure to listen to yet?! I think it's the latter one :')

"Elliott Smith" was the album that hooked me too. I played it over a few times that night. That was less than a year ago. I didn't know about him when he was alive, though I am about the same age. I wasn't as hip as I thought. I wish he'd come up to Canada to play more.
It's on a compilation called "Now that's what I call indie covers", and a disc that comes with the August DeWilde book of photographs of Elliott, but I've only heard it on RUclips.

right through the heart, everytime.

...How utterly charming is this?
omg...such a good healthy laugh, im so glad i got to hear him laugh at least in a recording if not in real life:(
I don't know if I should cry or I should smile or both listening to him singing and laughing! Oh, Elliott!
This is hilarious, like a glimpse into Elliott's sense of humor. I love it. For some reason.
my favorite of Elliott's covers. what a badass

I just gained so much more respect for him covering a Hank Jr. song, wow. Truly a man of good taste!

he forgot the best line in the song!
"cornbread and iced tea took the place of pills and 90 proof"!!

That laugh. Makes me blush a little.
Hearing Elliott laugh is a very nice sound. I wish that I could have seen him live or at least met him. He is my idol.
It's incredible. The part when the song goes "high on the town" sounds exactly like something out of an Elliott Smith song.
It is, it's the same melody as "so bad, so far" in the song shooting star

Lyrics
All my rowdy friends have settled down
And they seem to be more into laid back songs
Nobody wants to get drunk and get loud
Everybody just wants to go back home
I myself have seen my wilder days
And I have seen my name at the top of the page
But I need to find a friend just to run around
But nobody wants to get high on the town
And all my rowdy friends have settled down
And I think I know what my father meant when he sang about the "Lost Highway"
And old George Jones I'm glad to see he's finally getting straight
And Waylon's staying home and loving Jessi more these days
And nobody wants to get drunk and get loud
And all my rowdy friends have settled down
And the hangovers hurt more than they used to
And (cornbread and) ice tea took the place
Of pills and ninety proof
And it seems like none of us do things quite like we used to do
And nobody wants to get high on the town
And all my rowdy friends have settled down
Yeah me and my rowdy friends done rowdied on down
