I completely enjoyed watching this, as a youth of the 80's. I actually threw out 2 sets of core AD&D due to youth group influence (lol Im an Anglican Priest now). I love so many systems, and so little time. It's nice for us boomers and gen x'rs to find some kindred spirits out there. Thanks, even though 3 years old this is just as relevant today as it was then.
This video is excellent! I know it's been 5 years, and I'm late to the party, but pay no attention to haters. There are so many high-quality, wholesome comments here, giving you well-deserved praise! 👏 Your style is calming in an era of tiktoks and yt shorts screaming at people. Gotta love and respect that. I do. Also, your content is great. This video reminded me of Tom (solodungeoncrawler)'s first video. I'm assuming DCC (Dungeon Crawl Classics) came out after this video, so I'm humbly suggesting it. Game on, V
Started with that same boxed set. Got it for Christmas one year in the early 80s. Don't have the box any more but I still have the red rules and keep on the borderlands.
Cool video and channel. I prefer to play solo and I am looking for a board games that allow that option. So far I have only Alien Fate of Nostromo and Nemesis. But still looking for more. People are too busy with their lives and it is hard sometimes even to meet together and play.
I really enjoyed this. I am completely new to table top RPG, but was questioning the solo viability before I even started. You are helping to answer some questions. I would love to see you apply the mythic emulator from the ground up to Basic Fantasy or some of the other beginner systems you suggested. I am sure you would have a huge following!
You don't look old enough to remember the days when playing D&D meant you had to be a devil worshiper. But you're right, that is exactly how it used to be. I've been wanting to check out your vids for a while now, because I played MERP by myself forever. Way back then, everyone else was playing AD&D. I was in a couple D&D groups and experienced (and even still experience) some of the same negative things mentioned early in your video. Never in a million years did I ever think anyone else in the world did the same thing I did!!! For me, initially, it was my way of really learning all the details about the game. Seemed like no matter how much I covered, there was always something new I'd figure out each time I sat down to play again. I just unpacked all my stuff last year after a nearly 20 year hiatus and I felt like I may have even learned something else new, although at my age and after so many years away from the game, just looking at two 10-sided dice might have seemed like something new. I can't tell you how many hours and days and weeks and months I spent messing around with the game all by myself. I might have thought something was wrong with me, but it seems like a lot of people might have done the same thing even if for no other reason than just not having someone else to play with when you just felt like playing. And way back then, we didn't have all the video games that we have today. Anyway, I subbed a long time ago when you subbed on mine, but now I'll watch your vids. ;-)
Oh yeah I am old enough I still remember the small book shop my Dad took me to where I found the red box set this was before advanced dungeons & dragons. I am glad you are enjoying the videos I hope they are helpful with your table top game sessions. Game on my friend
I'm sure the rumors on the whole devil worshipping were much more widespread and accepted back then, however the mentality is still there. I just turned twenty not too long ago, and even I have run into people who, the moment I told them I played D&D, would have all sorts of questions about my "demonic religion" (that's how one person put it specifically).
I don’t typically play solo, other than testing out scenarios, but I generally only play with one other player. Your video is very informative and raises an interesting topic for discussion. Another game that is a lot of fun to play solo is Conan 2D20 by Modiphius. The most dynamic combat system in my opinion.
Love your channel and solo RPG! I’m new to it but have been really having fun learning how to play and make it interesting and your channel has helped me to do that so thank you! Only one question: do you actually “dip” (tobacco)? Kinda looks like you do and I do while I play which keeps me going! Lol
My first RPG was the Basic red box. Eventually I had 4 of the 5 boxes of the BECMI sequence (never got the Immortals set). Yeah, the whole satanic panic thing was stupid. I ended up doing a lot of solo playing as well just because of that: you were almost scared to ask anyone if they wanted to play. You can get the Rules Cyclopedia, which covers the BECM sets all in one book. It's available for download from DTRPG (sorry if you covered this. I posted before I was done watching the video).
Try Four Against Darkness..it's solo fantasy rpg..not DND though. Lots of fun, very inexpensive soft rule book and expansions. $10-15 Seriously check it out.
Thanks for the videos. Ive been dabling with solo RPG's since i cant find a group of like minded individuals like myself. I picked up a secondhand copy of Palladium Fantasy 2e and Mythic on your suggestion. Are there any parts of Palladium Fantasy you particuly like? Since the book is so massive i picked up the PDF from drivethru too (at the moment all the palladium book pdfs are 50% off). I was hoping the Palladium book would be my one stop shop for fantasy since im mostly into SCIFI stuff. I did play old school D&D in the high school library though at lunch times) Thanks again.
Great Video! Great perspective! Hope to see more. Thank You, totally applies and totally useful. Especially relating to my life style and what I was looking for!
dude, 10 min in your still defining what solo play is. I thought this was a how to not a why to. I think we all know why we want to play solo. there is a free dice roller app for your phone.
Sorry you feel that way about the video. And with the dice collection I own burning up memory on my phone is not a option for me, a lot of people enjoy collecting and owning several sets of polyhedral dice sets. Taking real dice away for a virtual app just kills the tabletop gaming experience in my opinion. Its about paper pencil dice graph paper maps and so on. But thank you for your comment have a great day.
yeah, I like the table top stuff too. I just thought since you spent a lot of time talking you could share some resources that are free. Not everyone can buy stuff or get to a hobby store. my closest one is over an hour away. downloading free books and a dice roller might be an option for one of the type of people you took 10 min to describe.

The fantasy trip
Great to see other gamers making how to's and game-play videos for solo gamers!
Excellent video with lots of useful information.
Thanks!
Just found your channel and wanted to start at the beginning....loved this video and can't wait to binge a bunch....Thank you
Thank you so much that was a while ago and I hope you enjoy them game on my friend.

Just found your channel, great stuff. I've been looking for a way to do this for a while, thanks for sharing your knowledge! Subbed.
There has been a resurgence because people are sick of the garbage from the video game developers....

Well, My Young Padawan, you can tell them all that you know at least 1 Christian who has played the game for years. :-)

I've known priests who play D&D, it's come full circle
Frostgrave l feel is a good system for solo play. I also just subscribed.
