I’m glad Marie can finally rest now, such a strong woman, she put up a hard fight for nearly 20 years, she had to learn how to talk and walk from scratch, she then went on to tour and release albums while still being sick. What a trouper ❤️
Roxette... a partnership that wanted to make music. Humble talents. Who were true to themselves. Incredible singer. Wonderful song writer. Simple songs that will live on. Love u marie. Thanku
The original version (there are, I think, four versions) of this song was for Christmas and the original title was "Must have been love (Christmas for the broken hearted) and it was released in Sweden as a Christmas single (it was a top five hit). Fast forward to 1989 and Roxette was up and coming in the U.S. Pretty Woman was coming out the next year and the producers contacted Roxette's management about them doing a song for the soundtrack. Did they have a song ready? As in, we probably don't have time for you to write a song. Roxette tells them they have something they can work with, Per retools the lyrics to get rid of the Christmas references and they record it in 1989 in time to be included on the Pretty Woman soundtrack and the rest is history.
That version took it somewhere else entirely. Such an incredible vocalist. Such a great performance. I grew up with Roxette. They really were a class act. RIP Marie.
Had the chance to see her live in Brazil in 2011, when she had returned to the stage after a successful brain surgery. She couldn't remember the lyrics to their newest songs, so they basically sang all the tracks of their albums Look Sharp! and Joyride. This idea of singing an entire album, back to back, at least for me sounded quite unheard of at the time. Wonderful performer, who's going to be sorely missed. RIP Marie and may Per Gessle carry on with his brilliant career.
Thankyou so much for reviewing Marie and Roxette. I absolutely adored her. I grew up through my teenage years listening to this band. It soundtracked my life then. Was so sad when she passed away. She was a beautiful lady with a beautiful voice. ❤
I love this performance. Was it in the 80's? Marie Fredriksson of Roxette was a fantastic singer and the band had many super hits. It's so sad that she was taken so soon. May her soul Rest In Peace. GOD bless...
The song was released as a Christmas song in Sweden in 1987.. and it s lyrics changed for the movie Pretty Woman on 1990. It was rereleased and It was huuuuuge all over the world. We will miss Marie in person but her voice will live forever and ever...
When a singer is doing good georgina always shows excitement and happiness, but this time you can tell she was kind of nostalgic and happy listening to this performance :)
Thank you. Thank you so much!!! I cried all the video. Im one of the biggest Roxette fan. I miss Marie Fredriksson so much !!! Greetings from Buenos Aires!!!
May she rest in peace. She fought cancer for 17 years, such a brave woman. P!nk has a lot of the same vocal characteristics as Marie had. Great and beloved voice! edit* and there you mentioned P!nk, so we agree!
Actually she was cancer free after 4 years but after that she had severe complications from the treatments. It doesn't make her less brave or the death less sad but in times like this it's important to have the facts so that stupid rumors won't spread.
Her tone was sublime! Yall should check out her songs 'Listen to Your Heart, 'Perfect Day', 'Never Is a Long Time', 'Fading Like a Flower', 'Spending My Time' ALL MASTERPIECES!
Finally. I still think you should have picked a live version of this song from their 1995 Johannesburg concert - her voice was SO much better. But Marie has been the love of my life since 1993. I can't describe how sad her death is to me, and to millions of her fans too, I'm sure. She had the most incredible voice ever. I will miss her forever. Your review was great and I guess she was one of those people you just don't have anything bad to say.... LOL. Marie Fredriksson - what a LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder why her voice was so much better in 1995? I noticed that, too. Tourism was when it was kinda ... at its huskiest. I'll say it like that, because I'm not meaning any offense at all. But by 1993-1994 even, there was a difference, and it was uphill in terms of not as much huskiness. Her voice is the most emotion-filled, powerful yet beautiful voice I have ever heard. So much emotion.
@@AmyAndThePup I think her having a baby in 1993 changed her voice. She said in an interview she sings lower because of her pregnancy. But you ask a very interesting question.
My dad listened to them a lot when he was younger and so I grew up with their music as well. Seeing that she died just broke me. I never thought I was so emotionally attached but guess I was wrong there.
I was fortunate enough to see Roxette in Boston on their first U.S. tour, they were amazing!!!! Marie you are so loved and so sadly missed!!!! The heavenly choirs must be sounding a bit better now. Love you Marie.
Thank you for this. Very thoughtful of you as this group was iconic and Marie's voice was truly special. What a loss. Again..much appreciated. This generation missed out on absolute greatness.
RIP Marie! Saw Roxette in 2013 in SAn Francisco. I am so happy I did, she looked and sounded great despite all she has been through! Thank u Marie and Pete for sharing your gifts! 90’s were better time with u❤️
Please look at some upbeat songs of hers like Dangerous or Sleeping in a Car, to name a few. When she sang those live, her amazing talent and voice range really showed. She always varied bits of the melody line and extended the songs.
Beside the Roxette hits, Marie had a very successful solo career in Sweden with a great range of Swedish language songs. She’s definitely a true gem and she left a wonderful legacy to be kept and treasured many years to come.
8:12 - exactly. It was a christmas song, that was remade to be in the movie, and everybody thought it fit perfectly with the it. The new version made more success than the main score "Pretty Woman" and makes success until now a days.
Thank you so much! Roxette was my childhood idol. I'm from Finland, and of course listened also Swedish bands. Marie will be missed ❤️ Could you react to some ABBA?
There’s a program in Sweden called ’The story behind the hit’ and one episode is about The Look. Per and Marie revisit the mastertapes and at one point the isolate Marie’s super superhigh harmonies for the ’nanananana’ part and jeez! they are high! Marie’s like: How was I able to do that?!?!
For those who didn’t know, it was originally released in late 1987 in Europe as ‘It Must Have Been Love (Christmas for the broken hearted)’. It was then slightly re-recorded in places to eliminate Christmas, replaced with winter and a slightly different mix. Then used for Pretty Woman in 1990.
I never knew that. In all the years and they found me really around the time Listen to Your Heart came out. I remember seeing that awesome stadium video on MTV Europe and being instantly obsessed. I must look up the original
Thank you for this I'm so so so so so happy you finally got to Roxette. Just wish it was under better circumstances. As my favourite band I can assure you that the goofing around at the start is perfectly normal behaviour for Roxette. Would love to see your thoughts on a later performance from around 2011 after their comeback :)
I should not be watching this video whilst chopping up some onions.. I have quite a lot of videos of Roxette stored on a ssd, that I gleaned from YT, because I very much like their music. What I also like is that she just stands there and sings entertaining the audience, without the need to prance about the stage like demented elephants, letting the backing singers do all the work, like beyonkey, rhianna and others trying to do what they call dancing. Marie is very pretty, has or had, a great voice, and loved all their songs that I have got, and so sad that she has gone suffering from cancer. Pink is fine though, and quite like her songs too. So thank you Georgina for making this wonderful tribute to Marie and the Roxettes..

Then Pretty Woman came a long and it became a worldwide success. I'm Swedish, but I live abroad, so I hadn't actually heard of her passing. She was one of my idols growing up and back home, she's a national institution, so this is pretty terrible, if not unexpected news. She suffered for a long time and could no longer tour, so she was clearly getting worse. But still, she was far too young to go.

that becomes colorful If you want to
So many choices, so diffcult to see
when your brown eyes want to see more

Dream about your dreams as longs as you feel life

Everything is too short to be hidden away
So do what you want and and bloom
