- Last month, leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations agreed on an outline deal to provide US$50 billion of loans for Ukraine using interest from frozen Russian sovereign assets. The first tranche of money is expected to be sent to Kyiv this week. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago. CNA’s Clara Lee explains.

It's like how some people take advantage of riots to loot and commit crimes. We can all recognise that as bad. The same logic applies here. That Russia has done wrong doesn't mean everyone should follow suit. It creates an atmosphere drenched with hypocrisy.

This is very bad. Those are Russian government money. If a third party states can seize money of another foreign country, this would cause a shakeup with other countries for investor confidence. This sets an unprecedent.

The original assets are untouched, and there's a UN resolution ES-11/5 2022 calling Russia to pay reparations to Ukraine.

The World Bank has upgraded Russia from an “upper-middle-income” to a “high-income” country with per-capita gross national income (GNI) totaling $14,250 in 2023.
“Economic activity in Russia was influenced by a large increase in military-related activity in 2023,” the international financial institution said Monday.
Russia’s move up the ranks was also boosted by growth in trade (+6.8%), the financial sector (+8.7%), and construction (+6.6%), according to the U.S.-based institution.
“These factors led to increases in both real (3.6%) and nominal (10.9%) GDP, and Russia’s Atlas GNI per capita grew by 11.2%,” it said.
