- Gimnazija Kranj Great Christmas Concert 2017 - Invitation to the Dance. Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra and United Choirs performed this stunning music under the baton of maestro Nejc Bečan. The Orchestra sold out two consecutive nights, december 18th and 19th, 2017 in Gallus Hall, Cankarjev doma, Ljubljana, Slovenia, EU. They played as usual with great spirit and musical excelence. Concert master is Nejc Avbelj. Our youth orchestra set another musical milestone. Concert and film director: Primož Zevnik
The Polovtsian Dances, or Polovetsian Dances (Russian: Половецкие пляски, Polovetskie plyaski from the Russian "Polovtsy"-the name given to the Kipchaks and Cumans by the Rus' people) form an exotic scene at the end of Act II of Alexander Borodin's opera Prince Igor.

Whenever I watch performances by this orchestra, I am always struck but the look of pleasure in the face of the conductor Nejc Bečan. He's proud of what these young musicians are achieving, and so he should be.

Their voices are beautiful.
More so as their voices mature.
Its a real treat when you hear the older mature contralto female voices.
And the males with their almost basso profundo voices.

I recognized "Stranger in Paradise" melody after the first bar. I recall 1st hearing it in the early 50's sang by Gisele MacKenzie on "Your Hit Parade" a weekly variety TV show. Hearing it instantly carried me to that TV moment and Gisele MacKenzie. I must have been all of 12 or 13.
Me too, fond memories. I recently turned 80, thank goodness my memory still works, just sorry that todays music does not have much body or character...
There is still good music out there but you have to look. It isn't as prolific as it once was. Also you have to consider the subject; my mom would not allow be to listen to the blues back then in the 40's and 50's.

What a talented orchestra! I am totally taken aback. My memories of Slovenia are from Jan-June 1957, when those kind people accepted us, Hungarians and took care of us after we had escaped Hungary, which was shattered by the Soviet Union. Our gratitude is endless and I celebrate Slovenians at any opportunity where I can.

This has been one of my favorite pieces for six decades. I was so happy to hear it again from my favorite orchestra. It was a wonderful performance Bravo! Incidentally the Gimnazija Kranj orchestra played this piece during their 2007 Christmas Concert.

Ce chef est décidément plein de maturité, et pour une telle pièce, archi connue, il arrive tout de même à faire comme un "lifting" et à conférer une sorte de fraîcheur à ce qui est un élément majeur de l'oeuvre de Borodin... Notamment par sa façon de "balancer" les rythmes...
