  • Top #animals Facts (Episode 1)
    After decades of rescuing and caring for wildlife orphans over the years, I decided to create the most interesting facts about the #Squirrel family.
    1. The word "SQUIRREL" is derived by the #greek word meaning shadow tail. When standing erect, the squirrel will rest its tail over its head as if to shade itself.
    2. Squirrels are born completely blind. The mother squirrel will use her own hair to insulate the nest as well as provide a scent for the wandering babies.
    3. Squirrels can have up to 2 litters a year and on some occasion 3 depending on food availability, weather, and or attic space. After birth a #mother squirrel will run her male mate away and begin to raise 2 - 5 young on her own.
    4. A squirrel's teeth never stop growing. Although their chewing is most and exploratory action, they will chew almost anything if they find it appealing. Including pens and pencils.
    5. Squirrels can run up to 20 mph. Most only scamper at 5 - 10, but have the ability to bolt when needed. Squirrels will often run in a zig-zag pattern to deter predators.
    6. #squirrels can jump up to 4 feet vertically and 10 feet horizontally. Their double jointed hind legs give them the ability to spring limb to limb in an ever so flawless fashion.
    7. There are over 280 known species of squirrels . Found all over the globe, the variety and versatility of the squirrel does not fall short, with the largest measuring up to 16' inches to the smallest measuring 2 - 5 inches long.

    I've ALWAYS wanted to rehabilitate a squirrel. It would be a dream of mine come true! Such amazing creatures!

      They are truly a joy of mine, but do not make great house pets. It's much more rewarding to rehab an animal back into the wildlife. You can always look into volunteering at a local rehab!

    I love them. I found a mother and four babies between my windows. The babies were not babies anymore. They grew a bit. I live on the seconde floor and beside leafs and soil, she even brought a peace of rag before giving birth I guess. I didn’t notice because my blinds are closed in the summer. My air conditioner is on wheels.

    So why are they so destructive? 😠 They do so much damage to homes. Why? What draws them to attics in the first place?

    • @SandersWildlife
      @SandersWildlife  4 года назад +1

      The lure of a shelter, out of sight of Birds of Prey, and also an attic is Insulated and warm. The main reason we see is about 70% of the time when we get called out to a squirrel job, there is a bird feeder or nut-bearing trees right beside the house. Pretty much they are just like us and will live close to where they eat every day.

    Hello! I have a pet squirrel but I don't think I have been given the right guidance to raise her. She's about 10 months old and she has a bird cage and good food. It's only my folks don't want her running around the house and she getting stressed about being cooped up in a cage all day. If you read this, Id appreciate it, greatly! I need all the help I can get. Best regards.

    • @SandersWildlife
      @SandersWildlife  6 лет назад +3

      This squirrel pictured here was released back into the wild not long after this video, I rehab them and they need plenty of room to run. For outside cages they need to be at least 10 - 12 feet tall. If the squirrel is becoming stressed and your unable to provide space for it grow then it should be released or build an outdoor enclosure for it. It can form physically and mental problems from being in a cage for too long. They don't learn the skills they need to survive on their own. You are welcome to email us at Sanderswildlife@gmail.com if you have any more questions.
