What a breath of fresh air! Unfortunately these new “filmmakers” are really convinced that AF will replace manual focus on professional productions. The problem is that they never been on such productions nor used a proper cinema camera. If you wanna be a videographer and shoot events for the rest of your life, you shouldn’t even consider a Pocket. But if you are an aspiring DP, a real one, the Pocket is just incredible and it will put you in the position to switch to an Arri or RED pretty easily. The other big problem is that these “filmmakers” think about focus as an inconvenient rather than a tool to tell a story when in reality it’s just as important as framing and exposure. And guess what? It’s not rocket science and it’s not something achievable only with a crew. I work by myself quite often and I always pull my own focus without any issues. You just need to learn your craft. Great video man, pretty unbelievable how a 4 years old camera (OG Pocket 6K) still destroys any other new camera under 5K dollars!

Well said bro. It all comes down to the user. Some processes are a standard for a reason. AF can be a helpful tool in many instances
, not denying that. But a focus puller on a narrative set will always be the first choice because it's SKILLED position that can communicate to the DP to nail the shot

I whole heartedly agree with you. Im still on the bmpcc 4k and I love it for all the same reasons. Having said that because of all the rigging I personally don’t feel like I get any benefit from the pocket camera’s ergonomics, I don’t feel like I can use it the way blackmagic thought we could. I think that’s why a lot of people want a box style camera, something a little more compact that’s easier to rig up in my opinion would be perfect. In contrary to all this I recently picked up a Sony fx3, much like your comment about the c70 I feel like I can get cinema like quality while also having autofocus, this camera has really helped me with my run and gun shoots, I’m able to throw it in a backpack and it just makes my life much easier for those quick run and gun gigs. That’s not to say the pocket doesn’t get used anymore but its more so reserved for those special projects where I have time to light, pre plan and use an easy rig etc. As an aspiring dp you can’t get better than anything by blackmagic but for my current work as a videographer Sony is just a much better fit while also still being capable of producing commercials, music videos etc

i am a sony shooter, but i truly love BMD and the pocket lineup. any time i get to use one is a pleasure. you hit so many nails on the head with this video. so many youtubers want this camera to be an A7iv lol. this is a near PERFECT setup for the everyday DP though. never understood why people care that you have to rig them out when the goal for a DP is to build a nice efficient rig in the first place, in my opinion. i would never show up to a shoot thats longer than like 2 hours without at least V-mount setup on any camera. when you're doing long form or doc style work, rigging is kind of necessary. these are not content creator cameras. i'd love to see BMD refresh the P4K. i have no need or want for 6K, but would love to see the screen and ND from the 6K pro trickle down to a dedicated 4K rig. love your content!

I appreciate your approach and explanation very much! One thing that I think is a problem with RUclips reviews of cameras is many reviewers aren’t out there shooting and editing commercially. Thus, they tend to focus on so many of the small technical “issues” with cameras. Every camera is far from perfect. And, every professional has their own workflow and type of shooting they prefer. Often times, a RUclips review of a camera is so narrow in scope and their points do not apply to the viewer. Yet, we can get so laser focused on things that don’t even matter. Get out there and shoot, and learn for yourself what actually is important to you in a camera.

I still have the BMPCC OG. I've looked at plenty of hybrid cameras and haven't purchased a single one. Why? The way I see it is if I truly care about the craft of filmmaking, I need to take the time to master the OG first. If I settle for a hybrid camera, I will get lazy. I might not get into rigging because the hybrid camera has EIS. I might not care about color science because I wouldn't use RAW formats. I might not look into accessories like an external monitor because a screen articulates. I'm not saying those features are bad and to each their own. However, true filmmaking and true high production is performed all manual. You have to figure it out for yourself in your own way and master it.
I appreciate this video. I appreciate your perspective. I hope others learn from it.

There is nothing wrong with using the technology to create the best work possible. Its not about the camera operator and his ego its about the end product. “Look at me, i pulled focus myself”.
Autofocus is an amazing tool and its not like you cant manually focus on a camera with good autofocus. So when people mention the autofocus its definetly a good point and a con of the bmpcc. You either have manual focus only or you have both and claming manual focus only is better is just dumb.
Most populair cameras from the last 3/4 years can create stunning images in the right hands, however there is no denying that sony cameras are much more versitile than bmpcc6k. So it cant really be king in 2023 when a7s3 exists, when fuji xh2(s) exist, when r5c exist. Its still a good camera but is no match against whats out there.

@@filmscientist these cameras are better if your just a one man band but if you’re like CineDallies who shoot bigger productions and work with film crews on alot of his projects, you’ll see that autofocus is not used at all. High level Directors & DPs at the top level do not use autofocus because they want complete control of their image. Learning to manual focus is just as important as learning to choose your angles, choosing the right focal lengths, crafting a shot and telling story. All of these skills together is what make cinematography what it is. The newest top of the line Arri & Red Cameras still don’t have autofocus for a reason. The Komodo may have it but it wasn’t originally designed for what people are using it for now.

  • @joenicklo
    @joenicklo Год назад +1

You bring up people complaining about battery life but that is an incredibly valid point Josh. Plenty of cameras in the P6K Pro's price range have superior battery life. In 2023, there is no excuse for this camera to still require you to rig up a v-mount or carry half a dozen NP-F570's. I've used this camera plenty, in fact we pair it with Komodo on jobs all the time but I just can't get over the horrendous battery life. So yes, people have very valid complaints when they bring up the battery life.
You mention that we need to be prepared to rig the cameras. Not everyone shoots in the same situation and for you to chastise people for NOT wanting to build heavy rigs is a very lame defense for this camera.
The lens mount is a whole different story with this thing. You're locked into ONE lens choice unless you physically and semi-parmanently modify the camera's mount system. No thanks. I'll take the versatility of RF or E mount any day of the week. As you well know, we aren't always shooting on one lens mount for jobs. I'll even go as far as to say that the Z Cam out-performs the P6K Pro in this regard due to the user interchangeable lens mounts (which you also know about and I'm surprised you didn't even bring up).
Regarding your comment on the C70 being $4K more for AF. Why not bring the FX6 into the discussion then? Both the C70 and FX6 has superior internal ND, CAF, more flexibility with the lens mount, solid codecs, superior IO (yet an arguably inferior menu system) and greatly superior battery life.
I agree with you on the IBIS/AF complaints. This isn't the camera for that, however Blackmagic had better get on board with Continuous Autofocus because all of the other major manufacturers are working on implementing or improving AF on their bodies. RED for example (even though they're taking their time) is putting a lot of work into AF/CAF.

6k pro is great for the money. Realistically 12-bit internal is going to offer a lot more data in general than any of the mirrorless shooting 10-bit internal. And of course some of them can do braw and the differences are much smaller at that point, but the external recorder setup can be cumbersome.
My only gripe with the 6k is just the poor readout speed/rolling shutter. As a good DP friend of mine said, “the pocket 6k looks amazing until you have to move it.” I think that’s a bit exaggerated likely…but it’s certain something that can be improved when compared to the fast readout speed of some of the newer cameras.
Blackmagic has a real opportunity to do something special in its next release. I personally don’t buy into the resolution direction. So I’m not looking for a 12k sensor in a cube…but I would love to see something like the Ursa G2 sensor, which I think is amazing, in an improved form factor.
Not directing this at you, but At the end of the day all of the gatekeeping and videographer v filmmaker and all that kind of stuff wearies me. All of the cameras are more than capable of producing great work. Let the work determine how people perceive you as an artist in your craft.

Great video, I'm afraid I'm on of those 'youtubers' that compared this camera to the hybrids haha. However to be fair I did also make a counter video explaining why the 6K Pro is better for certain types of filmmaking. As you mentioned, ideally filmmakers should have a 6K pro plus a mirrorless for when those are a better tool. For the budget it's probably better to own a 6K Pro plus an affordable mirrorless, Fuji, Sony A7iv, Panasonic S5ii rather than a top end hybrid.
For DP/commercial work, the 6K Pro is the way to go for a starting out or even experienced filmmaker up to a certain budget. I do think there is also the issue in our industry where filmmakers are buying Red Komodo's for work that really can't justify it. I've done some pretty big shoots with the 6K Pro and I've yet to feel that it wasn't good enough.

Lots of good points. For these small cameras I switched from BMPCC to the Fujifilm X-H2s a while back. The BMPCC 4K/6K cameras have been good for me, but the Fuji is better for me in a bunch of ways. First, I like the color science better. I get a bit more dynamic range. I can record Prores 422 HQ internally (I don't need RAW) on CFExpress cards. I also get a properly articulating screen and a versatile lens mount that can take almost anything. Add to that good battery life and a more ergonomic design, and it's an easy choice for me. Sure, the BMPCC has a much better interface, but it's not something that I'm changing all the time. Also, the BMPCC 6K Pro's ND's are crap, so I always used external IRNDs.

Great rant! 🙂 I am a pro editor and a hobby filmmaker and even though it took more than a year to figure this it out I never thought it was the camera's fault. And I am still learning. The great thing is that the image has so much juice that sometimes I am able to make "art director" decisions in post. Ones I don't have budget or time on set, changing prop colours for example. Almost all cameras are great nowadays and almost every single one of them is hated for the wrong reasons. There are no exceptions.🤷‍♂

THANKKKKKKKK YOUUUUUU! People are trying to lump all cameras into one category and you can't. I use my Sony and my Pocket for 2 completely different things. It's annoying that people keep doing that.

Very true analysis of the error some users make in complaining about BMPCC. It's a Cinema Camera not a Run'n'gun. You're supposed to soup it up for its intended use.

I agree. It's often reviewed by RUclipsrs who want a balanced camera that they can used for video/photos and vlogging, which the Blackmagic line of cameras definitely are not. However, for shooting films and commercials, you would be hard pressed to find a camera that completely outperforms the PCC6K Pro. I almost purchased a Komodo to replace our aging Ursa Mini 4.6K two years ago just as the 6K Pro was released. Someone made available some R3D footage shot on the Komodo for download so I decided I would see how different/better it would be than working with BRAW before I pulled the trigger. I couldn't find any significant improvement in quality that the Komodo produced over the Blackmagic, at least not enough to justify a $3500 price increase.

Great video man. I have 1 BMPCC 6k Pro and I couldn't be happier with it. You nailed it all, people just keep comparing it to all the other mirrorless camera because of the price, because I bet that if the camera would cost the same as Komodo people would give it more credit. Stupid, I know.
I also have a Canon R6 that I use for more of social media content and that's ok for it, but it doesn't even get close to the BM. So much that I'm even considering buying another 6k pro as my B cam for some projects.

Some folks don't understand the relationship between the BMD cameras, BRAW and DaVinci Resolve. Blackmagic states the camera has 13 stops of dynamic range, which is true; however, once you load the clips into Resolve, choose DaVinci YRGB color managed (without checking the auto box) and HDR DaVinci wide gamut intermediate...
...you just added 3 stops of dynamic range!

Finally a video that touch upon something other than just hardware specifications. Have been a passionate and adv. photographer for 30+ years. Now moving into this behemoth of shutter angles, LOG types, color correction, bitdepth, de-Bayering, audio threshold and an obscene amount of gear to mention but a few. Following Philip Bloom, Florent Piovesan, you and a few others have convinced me that I should choose a dedicated video camera and a few cine lenses (and focus pull and cage and video assist and ..). I do not mind manual focus or the lack of stabilization and I do not want to descend into some infantile brand flame-war either, but I will appreciate your input [a lot] before I put my money in one or the other type of eco-systems. Why choose a 6K dual iso Super35 video camera released two years ago over a 6K dual iso Full Frame hybrid camera (gravitating heavily towards video) supporting the same "raw" formats and codecs and released a month ago ? I may be asking the impossible here, but buying from scratch, would you from a picture resolution and -quality perspective still by BMPCC 6K Pro today (compared to what has arrived since its release, that is) ?

I think auto focus can be very useful even for narrative. But it's different on every camera. You really got to learn that specific cameras auto focus system to properly utilize it. Even if you know the system inside and out there will be situations where the AF just doesn't work well. It's a nice tool to have as an option. Overall I prefer manual focus. I tend to pull my own focus all the time. I can see where AF could come in clutch for specific shots where you don't have a focus puller or proper focus pulling gear/experienced 1st AC.
