It's actually a cost savings to the city to pay overtime to employees, for example...... Police officer average salary (regular patrolman) being $89,000 plus vacation, personal days, medical and city paying into officer pension. The city is down 2,000 police officers so most of the overtime is filling a void. So take into account the overall total monetary cost per officer vs overtime cost, it's still a significant savings to the city not to mention the bigger picture is it's one less officer the city has to pay many years of pension payments to after retirement. Imagine that cost savings. Makes you look at it differently now doesn't it? But it makes for a great news story.

You guys should check out the CTA salaries. I know a few folks that work in different sections of the train sections there. They make huge unchecked overtime money, spend a lot of time playing on their phones, and pretty much do whatever they want. As long as they pass their random drug tests, they’re good.

I used to wrk for a security company the CTA used to sub-contract years ago at the train stations. What you said is 💯% accurate.
They’d rack up dozens of hours of ot bi-weekly while third party security guards got paid pennies on the dollar to do the exact same job. They’d constantly brag to us security guards about it and passively try to make us feel like we were beneath them. They treat CTA and the “public” sector like their own private country club.

A bunch of young idiots whose parents are unaccountable will be downtown and into other businesses this summer again looting and rioting and CPD will just stand around watching. In tRump's America his wealthy friends received huge tax breaks and most regulations removed. Now his House of Representatives refuse to even discuss regulations on corporations. They are receiving too much corporate lobbying money. If you going to place blame place it on the real culprits. tRump for Prison 2024!

It all evens out for those departments, overtime pays time and a half or double time depending on holidays if there's staff shortage. It's only a small fraction of city employees out of, what 90K - 120K city employees in total from all departments. What these departments SHOULD be doing is distributing overtime evenly to all employees who want the extra pay. Not just offer all the OT to the same employees. It all comes down to department policy. I bet these departments offer overtime based on seniority or for specialized positions within those departments. If you think a cop making over $200K is excessive? A good fraction of that OT goes to taxes. Then you have to live in the city and pay city taxes. If they have kids in private school (city employees do not send their kids to public schools) or college? There's goes a chunk of that salary. So in the end $200K ends up more so as $115k in the bank. Which is what most cops and fireman make after some years on the job. If you want to see more of this. Look at how city politicians get away with side jobs/businesses/former positions in the city/extra pensions.
